best use of flutes on a disco song

It's very hard to find flutes on a disco song.

    1) "Hijack", Herbie Mann
    2) "The Hustle", Van McCoy & Soul City Symphony
    3) "Baby I'm On Fire", The Ritchie Family

I agree. Flutes are definetely not known for their extensive use on disco records (unless they're just in the background as part of a big orchestra)

Among the more jazzy stuff are the works of female flutist Bobbi Humphrey. She made some exellent stuff int the 70's.

There was a mid 80s r&b band named Surface who had a great flute solo in their "Feels so Good" cut from '86.

Turning to the more recent house music, flutes are definetely used a lot more. worth mentioning here are:

Miguel Migs - Brand New Day
    St. Germain - So Flute
    There was life after disco!!

I find St Germain's "So flute" is more a jazzy song than a house song, but it surely is a unique track, only based on flute.

My favourite disco track including flutes is

    Cloud One - Disco Juice
    I\'m a Victim ( of th very Song I sing )

    "Paiste" has flute galore

The Helsinki band G-Litter has a nice disco song "Paiste" from 2002 with prominent flute playing throughout. Their flute player is Susanna Paavola.

"The Express" by B.T. Express had good flute playing by Bill Risbrook and Carlos Ward. Not one of my big favorites, but it works.

I was going to start a new thread dedicated to tracks with nice flutes, but then I came across this oldie.

Here are some others not mentioned, but I've decided to omit obvious artists who played flutes (like Herbie Mann)

Abra Cad Abra - Hustle Bustle

Heart & Soul - Do The Walk

    Boz Scaggs - Lowdown

Eddie Drennon - Let's Do It Again

Foxy - Get off your Aaah And Dance

"Le Sifflet Du Baron" by Le Baron on Sirocco France from the producers and makers of Voyage has pseudo flutes !

Well, it sounds like a flute...it might just be whistling.. but it's sure worth listening to !

And though there isn't much, I like when the flute comes in on...

I agree. Flutes are definetely not known for their extensive use on disco records

I'm going to respectfully disagree ...

.....in the beginning - flutes were a critical component when creating that upper-end , uplifting sound that defined disco ( making it different from low-end oriented, "funk") This crisp, energetic new sound disco was producing was accomplished in part by using instruments that reached those highest of notes ... most notably of course through violins , but also via a variety of instruments ( each helping to give disco its broader , fuller consistency ) - the high-hat cymbals, xylophone, tambourines, scratchy guitars, female choruses, harps .....and not least amongst them : flutes.

You named two monster examples, Marcio, in THE HUSTLE and HIJACK , and Disco Funk & others have also offered up some significant examples (does LOWDOWN stop being disco without that flute???) and a review of earlier disco will find it laced with flutey songs.

    Songs like :

    NICE AND SLOW

    and

I'LL BE HOLDING ON --- those highest notes heard within there ....credit the piccolo (which is simply the smallest flute)

For me , perhaps the most rewarding example can be heard in the affirmative, feel-good-about-life sound created in this song:

    TRAMMPS THEME

in which that flute/piccolo presence is so vital. ( I don't know if music gets any better than that - IMO - I don't believe so. )

    Now

if we trace back to pinpoint the origin of the
disco use of the flute ... I believe it goes directly back to one specific person & one specific song .
Disco Funk , before I offer my opinion ....
would you care to try to name it?? (smiley with tongue playfully sticking out here)

'I'm Glad That You're Here' by Alphonse Mouzon features what sounds like great flute but it was probably just a synth as I'm usually wrong...
& then there was this classic:

    ...ya gotta beat the street......

"DAZZ" by Brick has a killer flute in the break...starts 2:38 until 4:44

I cannot post videos here anymore; I've tried 5 times to paste the embed code and it doesn't take.

Why does everything have to change for the worse?

Now that was a classic use of the flute Marky. That one you really appreciate with the volume so high your eardrums bleed!

As for the youtube embedding, me thinks Bernie is f...ing with us. After having trouble doing it when it first got going here, I finally got the hang of it and could do it in my sleep. Now the bossman decides he wants to mess with our heads by giving us new and improved.

Thank you Paul. then it's not just me. But it's YouTube also--they stopped displaying the codes the way they had been and it's now a mystery.

I did it once with the new system--but every time I tried to paste the code in today, nothing appeared.

Perhaps not the best use of a flute, but there's a pretty funky flute on the lp version of "Two Hot For Love" By THP Orchestra.

There's that bit on 'Love To Love You Baby' that gives good flute. (it sounds exactly like a bit on the 'Shaft' soundtrack - I just watched the film & thought it was LTLYB at first!)

Chris Taylor's Arabic Flute solo, from Sphinx' "Judas Iscariot".
By the end, when you hear Judas hang himself, it still gives me the heebie-jeebies!

How about Herbie Mann's Superman! In my opinion, the whole song is centered around the flute.
