First I would like to say I spent many Saturday afternoons watching Marty Angelo's "Disco Step By Step" show in 1978 and enjoyed it very much.
Here's my input regarding gays and disco. The gay community gave the initial support to artists like Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Carol Douglas, etc. Gay clubs didn't just play the top 40 disco hits of the day (e.g. Bee Gee's) but introduced a lot of the songs that have become cult classics of that era.
As far as gay clubs being the final nail in disco's coffin, that's totally ridiculous as many underground gay clubs like The Saint and The Troc continued to play disco styled music into the 80's long after discos demise as a pop phenomenon.
Gay clubs were not afraid to take chances with their music. How many straight clubs would drop tempo at 5:00 AM to play sleaze?
Okay I got that off my chest, I feel better.
