1985-2002 coming soon...
Here is a track list of my 1984 mixtape. Anyone ever notice that 3 of the biggest Halloween songs of all time were all from 1984? Also, there are two EXCELLENT remixes on here: Hex Hector's Remix of "Give Me Tonight" and Todd Terry's Remix of "Owner of A Lonely Heart." Of the original versions of songs used, my picks are "Jam On It" by Newcleus (the longest track on the mix) and "99 Red Balloons" by Nena.
13. "Radio Ga Ga" (DJ Bobo Remix) - Queen
12. "Jam On It" - Newcleus
11. "Somebody's Watching Me" - Rockwell featuring Michael Jackson
10. "Thriller" - Michael Jackson
09. "Ghostbusters" - Ray Parker, Jr.
08. "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" (Todd Terry Remix) - Yes
07. "Give Me Tonight" (Hex Hector 2000 A.D. Remix) - Shannon

05. "The Glamorous Life" - Shiela E
04. "When Doves Cry" - Prince

01. "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" - Cyndi Lauper
1985-2002 coming soon...
Really interesting. But I don't think "Thriller" has been issued in 1984.
Can you explain why did you put this track in this mix?
I\'m a Victim ( of th very Song I sing )
I have several version of "Owner...," but none are known as the Todd Terry Remix. Is this another name for the "Red & Blue mix?" Was this on Atco (US)?08. "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" (Todd Terry Remix) - Yes

Com King: For all of these mixes in the 70's & 80's (when Dance music regularly made the Billboard charts), I used the dates the song first peaked on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart. For example, if a song hit #1 on Dec 20th 1984, and stayed at #1 until February of the following year, I considered it to belong to 1984, even though it may have actually enjoyed the mojority of it's success in '85. However, in the case of "Thriller," MJ released the album in '82 and it was rather toward the end of it's cycle when the title track was released in '84. Of course, "Thriller" LP lasted quite a bit longer than your average record!
Bernie;
I pulled "Owner of A Lonely Heart" from a compilation called "Everybody Dance! Remixed Dance Classics" (an outstanding compilation!). It is on Atlantic/Rhino records from 1998. The liner notes actually list it as "Todd Terry Mix." Hope this helps! BTW, Atlantic had an interesting strategy on this. They actually had FOUR seperate releases under the same title "Everybody Dance." The first is a Maxi Single with 5 tracks, then there are 1, 2 and 3 CD sets. "Owner of A Lonely Heart" is only included on the 2 & 3 CD sets.

doc, that version sounds interesting... what is the BPM on that song?Originally Written by discodoc
Yes, it's an excellent mix. Todd kept some vital elements of the original, such as the famous guitar riff. Keeping the integrity of the original (if the original was worthy) is a key ingredient of a Grade-A remix. Todd Terry Mix clocks in at 129 BPM.
Mixtape for the biggest Dance/Party hits of '86... Here's a great example of how these mixes sometimes have to deviate from my personal tastes. #1 "Walk Like An Egyptian" is so old and tired and overplayed, but such a huge hit. If you'd asked me in 1986, I'd have said either "West End Girls," "Conga" or "Walk This Way." Now I'd definitely say "Conga," because this particular remix (which didn't come along until 14 years later) is soooo smooth and sweet! Nice jazzy feel to it. I really like this jazzy style of House music. Anyway, the list...

Living in 1987, nothing could beat Club Nouveu's cover of "Lean On Me." Since that time, I've grown to LOVE "When Smokey Sings" by Abc and "What Have I Done To Deserve This" by The Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield. This remix from the REmix DJ series is a ton of fun!

I am seriously considering making a "part B" to 1988 in order to include some favorites of mine that fell below the Top 13, such as Duran Duran's "I Don't Want Your Love" and M/A/R/R/S "Pump Up The Volume." Oh btw, yeah I admit I cheated a little using the Clubtraxx mix (#'s 2-4). I need a break every now & then! A bit of a "sellout" for mixing purposes  This mix does, however contain my FAVORITE SONG OF THE '80's: Pet Shop Boys' "Always On My Mind/In My House."

Planning a "Part 2" for this year as well... SO MUCH to pick from! Also, please note that I am unashamedly a Milli Vanilli fan. Whoever performed the music, it was great music. The scandal can't change that fact! And you know what? People inevitable LOVE hearing these songs again! (and it seems as if I am the only one with the guts to do it!)

I agree with you 100%... scandal or no scandal, nobody should be ashamed that they like these songs, although I'm burnt out on them. Looking at it on a business standpoint, they (record company) made millions of $$$$$. The media will always look for something to write whether it's true or untrue.Originally Written by discodoc
Volume 2 forthcoming, featuring "Vogue," "Groove Is In The Heart," etc...
This volume of #'s 1-10 (or 10-1) includes some personal favorites like the stellar "Metromix" (DJ Mix) of Vanilla Ice's infamous "Ice Ice Baby" featuring samples (vocals too!) from Queen/David Bowie's "Under Pressure." The samples are absolutely delightful! "The Power" was a long time favorite of mine, as well as the HIGHLY UNDER-RATED "Think" by Information Society. Such was the brilliance of this track that despite it's poor showing on Billboard (#28), I had to include it among my top 10 of the year. From 1990 onward, you will find that I tend to stray (as did dance music as a whole) farther and farther from The Billboard Top 40.

Although I didn't create the mix, I'll put in my theory anyway. :)Originally Written by Com King
Thriller came out before '84, but the album was at the top of the charts for months and months (it was, after all, the best-selling LP ever for years). CBS put out single after single from the LP, so just when you thought it was over with, another single would hit the radio and the momentum would continue. If I recall correctly, the title track was one of the last singles to be released from the album, along with the over-the-top theatrical video. It was everywhere.
"Everybody Dance Now" still stands as not only one of the biggest dance party anthems of 1991, but of the entire decade and of all-time (since the disco era, anyway!)... Notice that rap still played a pretty big part of my 1991 mix. Soon after, rap became known as Hip Hop, a slower BPM, sex & violence crazed gangster-led genre (about the time MC Hammer tried to "go gansta"). At that point, when rap was no longer "fun," it had no place in my mixes with the exception of a few Eurodance songs (with weak raps ala 2 Unlimited, Real McCoy or Captain Hollywood) or the rare return to classic rap roots (usually Will Smith). A side note: Metromix was a DJ mix subscription series, not to be confused with Metro (Mark Taylor/Brian Rawlings), the remarkable producers (i.e. Cher's "Believe")/remixers (i.e. Enrique Iglesias' "Hero") which will be seen in later editions...

Can't wait to do Part 2, which will include 2 Unlimited's "Get Ready For This/Twilight Zone," AB Logic "The Hitman" and much more. 1992 was a great year! Only drawback of this mix is that when I made this tape, Jason Nevins had not yet remixed "Jump Around." I've thought about re-mixing the entire set just to get this awesome remix in there, but decided I have too many other things to do. Oh yeah, I also just picked up "Rhythm Is A Dancer 2003." It is HOT! However, I still lean toward the "Purple Haze" remix because of it's sweet guitars which certainly must have influenced Culture Beat when they wrote "Mr Vain" a year later.

The remix of "Can't Help Falling In Love" features Elvis and is INCREDIBLE! Unfortunately will be very difficult to find due to "Future Mix" DJ volumes are probably long gone. I also love the creativity of the "Right Here/Human Nature" remix. The clip I used from the WPGC Remix of "Whoomp, There It Is" (which I used only to wrap up the Sub-urban mix) is very interesting b/c it incorporates clips from some "classic funk" and breakdance tunes. "More and More" had two completely different remixes labeled as "Underground Mix," one on the album "Love Is Not Sex" and another on the single. This is the album version (FAR better!). Anyway, the mix...

Enigma wow'd me again in 1994, and I also loved Prince's (TAFKAP at the time) "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World." The jazzy "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" was a unique ear-catcher. Not in the Top 10, but anyone remember Sagat's "Funk Dat?"

1995 was the year that hillbilly music hit the dancefloor. It actually started in '92 with The Grid "Swamp Thing," but exploded with Rednex "Cotton Eye Joe." From there everything from "Pipe Dreams" to "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" received the dance treatment. Also in 1995, Italian star Corona covered an old song by Joy and Joyce (Baby Baby @ #9) and turned it from a pretty bad song into one of my favorites of the decade. Italian Dance music would turn the world upside down a year later... Must comment on #1, Mariah Carey's "Fantasy." I am certainly not a Mariah Carey fan, but this remix by David Morales with the Def Drums intro and down-bpm break featuring the Tom-Tom Club is undeniably a masterpiece.

01. "Fantasy" (Def Club Mix) - Mariah Carey featuring The Tom-Tom Club
Wow...is that for real? Mariah Carey and the Tom Tom Club???? That seems unimaginable. I saw the reunited Tom Tom Club play in November of 2002 - they were really good! Everyone was dancing. I think they are on tour again right now...if they come to your town you should check them out. I like some of the new songs on the CD, but it was really cool seeing them play "Genius of Love". Tina is a mean bassist! Too bad they wouldn't play "Wordy Rappinghood" even though I kept shouting it out. Later, after the show, they came to a local bar and hung out with the audience. They were very friendly and ready to have a good time.
Don't be ashamed of liking Milli Vanilli - I do too! The NY Subway remix of "Girl you know it's true" and "All or nothing" are my favorite tracks. It's weird that everyone was so pissed off that they didn't write or sing the music, when nowadays it's common knowledge that pop acts usually aren't really singing.
Miss Carey's "Fantasy" was sung over the "Genius Of Love" sample. If you heard "Fantasy" on the radio...you heard Genius Of Love" too. This wasn't just for a special remix version.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
Ohhh...cool factoid. I thought you meant she sang with them playing as her backing band...that was just a hard collaboration for me to picture. Not surprising that she would sample "Genius of Love". Didn't she also cover the InDeep song "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life"?
1996 was a HUGE year for Dance music! It was the year that WKTU returned to New York as the #1 station in the ADI, resulting in dozens of stations around the country attempting to replicate the format. It was a brief time of Dance bliss before the Hip Hop onslaught. It was also important because a whole new genre of music was "born" when Robert Miles released "Children." At the time, many called it Dream House, Dream Dance or Dream Trance. Although Trance existed prior to '96, it was with "Children" that the genre exploded and resulted in Trance's dominance of Europe for several years. Another big song that year was Todd Terry's remix of "Missing" by Everything But The Girl. The remix MADE Todd Terry, and the beat was used and re-used, most famously in No
Mercy's #1 smash "Where Do You Go." The Ocean Drive remix which I used here is among my favorite songs of the decade. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Check out the list for '96!
