Does anyone remember a song called "Swing Your Daddy"?
...
Actually there was both a "Swing Your Daddy" Part 1 & 2.
Both appear on the "Swing Your Daddy" album by Gilstrap released in 1975 on Chelsea records. The track was written and produced by Kenny Nolan.
I heard this song, parts 1 and 2, for the first time when I picked up a "2 for 1" CD of Jim Gilstrap with the Swing Your Daddy and Love Talk lp's. It wasn't what I expected the way you guys had talked it up. It has a nice, old, rock 'n roll sound, complete with 'doo wop' background and lots of reverbed voice, but I guess I was looking for something else. Like the sax and organ on the instrumental side. Reminiscent of King Curtis and Jimmy McGriff.
Nrg --- If you're looking for a 'club' piece, this isn't it. If you like old R&R, check it out.
The first few times I heard 'Swing Your Daddy', I thought it was George McCrae!!! It's a great pop/soul tune which I now have on a CD re-issue through Castle (coupled with the 'Love Talk' LP). Anyone remember another commercial but fine number from around the same time, 'You're My Everything' by Lee Garrett?
Thanx for reminding me that 'Rick Springfield and Disco Tex' were not the only big names for Chelsea Records and for which the label will be remembered. William DeVaughan, New York City take a bow too. I loved the label design for Chelsea. That was an eye opener when most UK labels were only two colour.
Swing Your Daddy did sound a little dated when released, but it worked for me really well as a sub 'Rock Your baby' type of groove. However, I never knew it was such a big hit in the UK charts. Perhaps I should have spun it a little more?
Lee Garrett - You're My Everything - This was a record I had, but played it very little from what I remember. Was this a hit too?
We're in danger of getting into Danny Williams - Dancin' Easy or Kenny Lynch - Half The Day's Gone and We Haven't Earned a Penny territory here. Anyone remember these two UK suave soul outings?
Yes, it got to Number 15 in May 1976. Nice song!Originally Written by QUINNY
Yes, I've got the Kenny Lynch tune on a (rather crackly) Streetsounds LP. As for Danny Williams - I know that scraped the charts but I've never heard it.We're in danger of getting into Danny Williams - Dancin' Easy or Kenny Lynch - Half The Day's Gone and We Haven't Earned a Penny territory here. Talking of George McCrae (we were weren't we?) I saw an LP by George the other day in a 2nd hand record shop which was produced by Gregg Diamond. I can't remember the title & I didn't have time to listen to it so is anyone familiar with it enough to give me a description please?
...ya gotta beat the street......
