Up until about a few weeks ago, I was only familiar with this song during the intro to show and had never heard the full version. I've got it currently in the playlist on Discoteria and I have to admit I've really grown to love this track. Maybe its kitszhy or camp but I quite like it. Just wondering what some of you out there think of the track?

When I bought the album, I thought this song would be the high point but for me now the best song of the album is the disco cover of "Wives and lovers". Sadly the rest of the album is full of sugary ballads (and I never really understood the meaning of the picture on the cover).

Yes, wasn't that one of Jones' original hits back in the 60s? I'm not really familiar with him other than recalling seeing him on various variety or chat shows back then and my mother kind of liking him but always saying he wasn't as good as his father.

I always did like the Love Boat theme song (probably one of my fave '70s tv themes of all time), and it probably gave Jack Jones' career (by 1977) a much-needed shot-in-the-arm as he had been a mainstay of the Easy Listening charts back in the '60s.

[I better preface this with a "I think" or "I always thought"]..."Wives & Lovers" was the theme song for a 1963 film of same name staring Janet Leigh, Van Johnson, Shelley Winters, Martha Hyer & Ray Walson. [But I may be wrong on this!] They came out at the same time...but now I can't verify that it was actually in the movie---will check a reference book at home tonight to be sure-- anyway the record reached #14 on the Billboard Pop chart in 1964. Jones won a Best Pop Male Vocal Grammy for the recording.

[UPDATE: Well I was partly right and still totally wrong. Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles book says the Bacharach-David composition was "Inspired by the movie starring Janet Leigh." But not actually in the movie. Oopsie.

Jack Jones recently (April 2010) performed a reworked version of The Love Boat Theme as part of the opening for the TV Land Awards.

It's the second clip down. They cut off the part where host Tim Allen came out on a large replica of The Love Boat.

Go down a couple of more clips and you will see the cast of The Love Boat receive an award. The gang includes Charo, who also did a version of Love Boat Theme on her Ole Ole album.

Thanks for sharing this Needlefingers. I quite like the musical arrangement of this version, however not too crazy about Charo's vocals. Her phrasing is quite bad.
