As a beginner,
you can use WinXP's own sound recorder, it is accessible from "[+]Start" button,
All Programs,
Accessories,
Entertainment,
Sound recorder
Make sure you have a huge hard drive space if you intend to record long periods as this program won't compress to MP3 format, it saves to WAV which is 10 times larger. Expect 80 megs for one song. If you can't manage to record, it's because you need to adjust to record levels in "Record control" window available from the speaker icon on lower right side of the screen.
If you buy this record your life, will be better.
