I WAS BORN THIS WAY
A Gay Preacher's Journey Through Gospel Music, Disco Stardom, and a Ministry in Christ
By Archbishop Carl Bean with David Bitz
Simon & Schuster. 264 pp. $24
During the heyday of disco, it's doubtful that every majestically coiffed, leisure-suited, tightly slacked gentleman dancing to Carl Bean's 1977 hit "I Was Born This Way" recognized the song as an early homo-positive nightclub anthem.
-- Justin Moyer
I'm happy.
I'm carefree and I'm Gay .
Yes I'm Gay.
especially when blasted out of speakers at head pounding decibels . (tongue out)
( perhaps some leisure-suited, tightly slacked gentlemen might've been too smashed to notice ... maybe that's what he means. )
I'm hoping there's some real disco era reflections in this book ( ??) about this song .... (??)
and particularly why Motown took such an interest in it ... with two attempts at putting it across through two separate projects.
(seriously--what's up with that ???)
The first time was with an artist named Valentino on their short lived GAIEE label (!!!) no less .
This record encapsulates what was emerging at the time: this new found gay power and the expression of it that disco gatherings were providing .
