Marlena Shaw's 'California Soul' was my track of choice to watch the sun rise to, many years ago... 8)
Rodney Franklin's 'Felix Leo', Joni Mitchell's 'Marcie' and Frederick's 'Games' (both very autumnal) and Azar Lawrence's 'Theme For A New Day' also suffered a similar fate. I used to make compilations with such themes - I may revisit them for this thread.

    Hey Paul C,

Where to start, where to start?

    Manhattan Melody- Herb Alpert
Saturday Night, Sunday Morning - Thelma Houston
    It's Over - Alma Faye
For Your Love - Idris Mohammed
    Hot Butterfly - Bionic Boogie
Kiss You All Over - Phyllis Hyman

and the list could go on, and on, and on. Sleaze was my favorite part of the evening, and for me the hardest to mix, you really had to keep the flow going on these.

PS and how could I forget:

Pull Yourself Together - Buddy Miles
    Changin' - Sharon Ridley
The Pounding Drums, The Flashing Lights...

OK -- we've been here before but what the hell. I'll start with a playlist that some might recognize and drop a few names after:

    SURRENDER - 5TH DIMENSION
THROWIN' IT ALL AWAY - RHETTA HUGHES 8)
WRAP YOUR ARMS AROUND ME - AGNETHA FALTSKOG
KISS YOU ALL OVER - PHYLLIS HYMAN
    MR. BACHELOR - LOOSE ENDS
    RISE - HERB ALPERT
    GEORGY PORGY - TOTO
SINCE I FELL FOR YOU/I'M FALLING IN LOVE - HODGES, JAMES & SMITH
    DON'T SAY THAT IT'S OVER - AZIZI

    A couple more:

TAKE ME DOWN/LOVE NO LONGER HAS A HOLD ON ME - JOHNNY BRISTOL
    DISCOMANCE - WRIGHT COMBINATION
FANCY DANCER - STARCRUISER (GREGG DIAMOND)
    WALK AWAY - DONNA SUMMER
MELLOW BLOW/ALONG THE SHORE - BARRABAS
    I'LL PLAY THE FOOL/SUNSHOWER - DR. BUZZARD'S... BAND
YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME - PHYLLIS HYMAN
IT SEEMS TO HANG ON - ASHFORD & SIMPSON
GIVE ME YOUR LOVE/HOW DO YOU LIKE TO BE LOVED - CURTIS MAYFIED 8)
SOMEDAY WE'LL BE TOGETHER - POINTER SISTERS

Geez... Marky --- where's that list you gave us on the old board. It had it all.

Here are a couple for starters...

    Rose Laurens 'American Love'
Cecil Parker 'Really Really Love You'
    Hi PaulC,

Are you into this or are trying to get a feel for what it was all about?

I'll leave the definition of "sleaze" to Mr Nicky...(Yes, we've passed this way before....)

Geez, I wish I knew where that list was Nicky. I looked...but I can't seem to find it. I think we did this last summer.

Off the top of my head...some titles that were Trocadero Classics:

    "It's My House" -Miss Ross
    "Runaway Love" - Linda Clifford
"Never Knew Love Like This Before - Stephanie Mills
"You Stepped Into My Life" - Melba Moore
"Was That All It Was" - Jean Carn(e)
"Stars In Your Eyes" - Herbie Hancock w/ Gavin Christopher
"Don't Stop The Music" - Yarbrough & Peoples
"Mama Used To Say" - Junior
"Do I Do" - Stevie Wonder
"Don't Push It, Don't Force It" - Leon Haywood
"It's Ecstasy( When You Lay Next To Me)' - Barry White
"Most Of All" - Gloria Gaynor
"Love For The Sake Of Love" - Claudja Barry
"Hot Butterfly" - Bionic Boogie (Luther Vandross)
"I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" - Hall & Oates
"Tonight (You & Me)" - Phyllis Hyman
"Loving you, Losing You" - Phyllis Hyman
    "Rapture" - Blondie
    "Passion" - Rod Stewart
"Like An Eagle" - Dennis Parker
"Walk The Night" - Skatt Brothers

OK, that's enough...when I get back to the Skatt Brothers, I'm obviously in RERUNS AGAIN!!!!!

The reason I called it and most others called it sleaze was because of the way it made me feel when I heard it and danced to it. Here is an example: I was practicing one night at home and had played around 4 songs of an intended set, when a friend who was staying with me at the time, came out of the shower and said " boy, you'd better go out and get yourself laid tonight!"

That was my intention for the set. Get it on, or as the same friend used to say "tits on the floor, ass up in the air music"

I played lots of all this sleaze sets but the best set I ever heard was played by DJ Jorge Cadenas, he used to play in Key West and for a while in the early 80’s was Djing at Miami’s Downtown Salvation club, a mixed club and the only after hours place back in those days, that night he was doing something that never occurred to me and never attempted to do in all my Dj years, he was having a musical “conversation” with the crowd! he was programming morning music to convey a message to the crowd through the lyrics or title, like writing a letter , and people were just dancing and waiting in anticipation to see what he was going to spin next and in what direction he was going to take the conversation, at first I didn’t know why the crowds were cheering so much with every mix but then some one told me to string together the songs tittles to get the message, I mean this was good, especially for a DJ like me that knows the effort, music knowledge and practice needed to pull this off , he was not only mixing music but he was also composing and programming the message too!, I hear he’s retired and lives a few blocks from me, maybe I’ll drop in one of this days and see if he has any old tapes… anyways, I thought I mention this anecdote since I never seen anyone here mention anything like this before.. Did any one else try this with morning music? Any Playlists?

Mixmachine: I think a few of us have run a few titles together intentionally but I don't remember anyone doing an entire set. That would be an accomplishment. I know personally it was more about the feel of the music creating the mood, not necessarily the lyrics. I wish Jorge's playlist was available so I could see/hear what he was doing.

    Add these to the mix:

My Love Don't Come Easy - Jean Carn 8)
    Somebody's Eyes - Viola Wills
    Ain't Nobody - Rufus & Chaka
Give Me Your Love - Active Force
Garden of Love - Don Ray
    Love Talk - Jim Gilstrap
Hold On To My Love - Jimmy Ruffin
Just Us - Two Tons 'o Fun
I'm In Heaven - Touch of Class
I'll Be Good to You - Brothers Johnson

    Nicky

I know somebody is going to ask this, so I will jump in first.

Isn't Hold on to my Love much faster than all the other songs listed so far?

Go ahead, explain the difference between slow and fast sleaze! :D :D :D

A couple more Classics that MUST be mentioned:

YOU CAN DO IT - Al Hudson & The Partners featuring the immortal wail of Miss Alicia Myers (everyone at TROC was jumping in place as the buildup took place to the "whoa, whoa, whoooooaaaaaa, do- your - thing, ya'll...then the rutting on the dance floor began. I will NEVAH forget it  ).

MUSIC IS MY WAY OF LIFE - Patti LaBelle (the sweet side of "sleaze"; pretty, fun, sooo danceable ...."my feet can dance upon a dime/ I give five cents back keepin' time")
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

You would raise that point, wouldn't you? :)

Well, for me, it's all about the attitude of the song, not the tempo. Just the way some of these guys shocked me when they put "Surrender" by Swing Out Sister in the Hi-Nrg category :o , sleaze can be fast or slow. Granted, not frenzied, but it can be up there. Also, a little love on the pitch control doesn't hurt :D .Hell, most of it is just "pretty music". Other uptempo cuts I would put there are:

That Old Black Magic -Jean Shy
Take Me To The Bridge - Vera
Ooh, La, La - Suzi Lane
Make That Feeling Come Again (especially the second half) - Beautiful Bend

Uptempo sleaze gets 'lost' in the mix, as it should I think, because it's too easy to move between "hard" dance and "soft" dance. But, it's great too use as a 'chill a little bit 'shift before the climax of an uptempo night. All about those mood changes.

Somebody was bound to. I knew the answer but thought you would be able to explain it better. Funny how "That Old Black Magic" keeps popping up in our posts, isn't it?

My fave is Agnetha's "Wrap Your Arms Around Me".

I wish there was a web site totally devoted to sleaze where you could listen to sound clips of all these forgotten classics. I'll bet most young people don't even know what sleaze is.

Guys, I'll NEVER understand the 'Morning Music' / 'Sleaze' thing. From what I can see it's almost anything that wasn't straight 4/4, c125 -140 BPM, pumpin', speedin', straight ahead Disco music. There are tracks mentioned here that are exactly what a UK audience would dance to at peak times e.g. Gene Chandler - Get Down (115-117 BPM) and really get off to. I guess real funk and real soul got somewhat left behind in the States more than I ever imagined during the Disco boom. Us Brits were the only people who were really lapping it up, 'cos even the rest of Europe was far more 'pop' orientated as a whole.
You guys must have been speeding and tripping baaad!! :o
