    Latin disco

Around the mid 70s, the were a spate of disco tunes made by salsa musicians. For example, Yambu - Sunny, Milton Hamilton - Love Supreme, Guarare - Semi Suite.
I love the sound and feel of these tunes which is quite different to disco music from a soul or funk tradition.
I've got the 2 Latin Disco compilations on Nascente and Fania. Can anyone recommend any other tunes in this genre ?

    Re: Latin disco

Some examples of what I consider good 'latin' disco:

'Que tal America' - 2 Man Sound (I know they were Belgian but the sound's latin)
'Another cha cha' - Santa Esmeralda
    'Mandolay' - La Flavor
    'Cafe' - D.D.Sound
'To Be With You' - Jimmy Sabater
    'Latin Hustle' - Fatback
    'Jingo' - Candido
'Hot to Trot' - Alfredo De La Fe
    'Cuba' - Gibson Brothers
'Hot shot' - Karen Young (I don't think she was latin at all but I always think it's a very latin sound)
    'K-Jee' - MFSB
    'Disco Royale' - Cuba Gooding
    ...ya gotta beat the street......

    Hi SandraDee
Some great tunes but only Jimmy Sabater fits into the sound I'm interested in. Anyone have any more suggestions ? From what I can glean from record labels etc, this music was made by New York based salsa musicians 'crossing over ' into the disco scene in the mid 70s. The production and instrumentation is in the Fania tradition

Bernie - here is a link to the Fania cd and tracklisting:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...SIN=B001OD6H90

    1) Good Times (Como Vamos A Gozar)
    2) To Be With You
    3) Dance, Dance, Dance
    4) On Our Way to Tomorrow
    5) Waterbed (Vocal)
    6) My Love Supreme
    7) Bad Luck
    8) Wata Wasuri
    9) Johnny's No Good
    10) Es Un Demonio Ella
    11) Call Me
    12) Afro Hustle
    13) Mambo Rock (Theme from "Salsa")
    14) Joe Cuba's Latin Hustle
    15) Salsa

discorecordplayer - the THP orchestra might KICK ASS but can you link a tune with a latin influence please?

    Salsoul Orchestra
    Samba Soul
Bobby Hebb's version of Sunny from 1976 is a direct copy of the Yambu version.

This one might not be as latin as you'd like, but the guy is a latin jazz musician

    Re: Latin disco

When I think of Latin Disco, the first two things that come to mind are Charo and Salsoul.

Ole Ole was a favorite. But even better was this version (that I was thrilled to see someone post on YouTube.) An instrumental cover by John Davis and The Monster Orchestra:

I like Charo's later guitar albums. She's an OK singer, but an excellent guitarist. On her album Charo And Guitars, she did a cover of Bolero. And released a dance version. It sounded like something that could've come out in the late 70's, and progresses to a Latin/Heavy Metal sound at times. It's really grown on me:

"Because there's music in the air."

    Re: Latin disco

Hi Disco Funk, The Louie Ramirez lp 'A Different shade of black' is a killer with covers of Bad Luck and Do it anyway you wanna. Salsa is a great hustle tune.
Ive scoured the net and cant find the music for Sunny '76 or the b-side Sunny (disco) . Do you have a link ?
The Samba Soul tune Chove Chuva is new to me. Its samba disco as opposed to salsa disco ! I like the percussion breaks.
The tune by Cindy Rodriguez - 'what you need is my love' is another great salsa disco tune.

Can anyone come up with any more ?

    Re: Latin disco

    here's some more:

    JOE BATAAN - "Mestizo/Rap-o-clap-o" (1979)
    GIBSON BROTHERS - "Mariana" (1980)
GIBSON BROTHERS - "Dancin' the mambo" (1980)
    LA BIONDA - "Bandido" (1978)
    KID CREOLE & COATI MUNDI - "Qué pasa/Me no Pop I" (1980)

I love "Mandolay". If you're lookin' for some flamenco flavor, don't miss one track that was a huge hit back then: Santa Esmeralda's "Don't let me be misunderstood" (1977).

also there's the Spanish band Barrabás, more of a Latin group trying to sound like American funk... but they're awesome 8)
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

These are a few others from the NYC area not on that CD. Some received some club play other are more obscure but fun to listen to now.

Bandolero by Juan Carlos Calderon (1974)
Let's do the Latin Hustle" - The Young Sisters (1975)
Let's do the latin Hustle" Mexicanos (1975)
    "Corazon" LTG Exchange (1973)
"Never gonna let you go" Jobel and the Orchestra de Salsa (1976)
    "desafio" Fania all Star (1976)

Then from the Miami area you'll find a few memorable ones that played locally and featured a distinctive "Miami Latin sound", some of the local bands of the 70's played many covers of hit Disco records in Spanish and/or instrumental versions.

I recently discovered this web site with the history of most of the these bands in the mid 70's Miami scene where you can hear some samples.
    http://www.djalexgutierrezmiami.com/...softhe70s.html

here are some lesser known Miami latin Disco style records I dug up for a CD I never made.........

    Rice and Bean Orchestra

    http://www.discomusic.com/records-more/8666_0_2_0_C/

    Quizas quizas-- Sweeties

    "Besame mucho" (TK)- ???

    "more" Pearly Queen
    "Bandolero '76" Viva
    "Cuando vuelva a tu lado(what a difference a day makes) Antiques ('75)
"Swearing to god/Perfidia" Willie vega ('76)(Sax instrumental)
    "The Godfather's theme" Majestic ('76)
    " no morire, vivire" ( I will survive) Anexo 3 ('79)

And finally I just discovered this video in the above Miami Page of an old school Miami band named 'Mantrap' that reunited for this December 2009 club gig..never expected to see a band doing Calhoon's "dance dance " and Barrabas' "woman" live again...
