Thanks for the wake up call Delight

This week I wanna go with one of my favorite bands from the era, Average White Band (AWB).

For sentimental reasons I'll always love "A Love Of Your Own." My pick however for their best is "Queen Of My Soul." While not quite as sentimental for me, it says so much about how I feel about music.

My vote goes to 2 songs from the same album (Feel No Fret):

    1 ATLANTIC AVENUE

    2 WALK ON BY

The first one talks about the beauties of my city Rio de Janeiro (it mentions tropical beaches like Ipanema, etc...)

Atlantic Avenue is located in Copacabana Beach. There is a lot of under age prostitutes in the streets at night waiting for the tourists' money, and a lot of prostitute boys waiting for gay tourists money too. In the 70's there were some very famous gay discos which are now closed down. The hetero discos from the 80's still exist and are full of prostitutes waiting for tourists. But in spite of all this nightlife action, the place is very beautiful and during the day is very calm (but still very sexy, as the beach is always full of beautiful bodies).

The second song is a cover, but it's better than all previous versions I've heard.

I forgot to say that it is a bit dangerous at night. Torusits have to be pretty careful in the streets of Copacabana, specially if they are searching for sex. There are always police raids because of the under age girls.

This is easy for me although my lover is going to kill me. He likes, always has, "Pick Up The Pieces", which is no doubt a serious jam. But for me, the choice is "Let's Go 'Round Again". Every so often I would use this to 'get the crowd back' after a too-long drag show (The Anvil had two per night.) This song starts out up, airy, light, almost sing-a-long with just a touch of funk. The breakdown in the last two minutes is awesome plus the song ends cold. Can't get much better.

Once again, I have to agree with Nicky - the extended version of "Let's Go Round Again" is my favorite AWB tune.

I don´t consider the AWB to be disco, but still, I like them too:

    1: Theatre of excess

    2: She was a dream

3: When will you be mine

Did you know they still perform? I wasn´t at their concert last year, but I heard it was good!

    Pick up the Pieces.

Yes it was Disco. Disco was compromised mainly of Soul and Funk at the beginning.

    Hi Giovanni!

I have an import twelve. I'll try to remember to look up the label and code number tonight and report back to you!

    Hi Giovanni,

Maybe this will help. The code number I have is from a promotional Arista 12": SP-92. The date is 1980. I would think the "SP" stands for Special Product. This 12" has four songs: Side A starts with "Love Feelin'" by Magic Lady and the next cut is AWB's. Side B (where they inserted the Arista/GRP logo) has "Funkin' for Jamaica (N.Y.)" by Tom Browne and "You Ga (Ta Give It)" by The Brecker Brothers.

    1. "Pick up the pieces" from their double live album (if I remember correctly, it takes up a whole side).

    2. "Let's go round again"

    3. "Atlantic avenue"

These boys from Scotland were serious!

Dance Cut: "Pick Up The Pieces"

Ballad cut: "A Love Of Your Own" (I'd forgotten about this tune, until I bought their Greatest Hits CD and was pleasantly reminded of KLSX in SF)
    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

    Mark, did you mean KSFX?

Giovanni, the import twelve inch single I have is on RCA from England. The backside is "A Love Of Your Own". I forgot to bring the piece of paper that I wrote the Catalog number but the copyright date for "Let's Go Round Again" is listed as 1980. I recall this import came into Aloha Records for a short time and quickly became a collector's item (Mark, were you working at the store yet?).

Keefe, I knew those call-letters didn't sound right. And, no, I didn't work there until late '82, I think.

    Keefe,

Next chance you get could you give me the time signature off your import? My domestic 12" is the same as the lp, 4:40.

    Hi Nicky!

I'll have to time this version manually this weekend because the label doesn't list the time. However, I know this version was longer than the LP, which is why the import twelve was much in demand.

Talk to you hopefully on Monday. Hope you have a GREAT weekend!

I have some of their albums in my collection and the my main picks would be:

    Got The Love 1974

Pick Up The Pieces 1974 (very funky)

I Just Can't Give You Up 1974 (super cool disco jam)

    Cut The Cake 1975

Groovin' The Night Away 1975 (another cool disco jam)

I wonder are the Average White Band the first Scottish funk group?

    Hi Nicky and Giovanni!

Here are the details of the import twelve I have of "Let's Go Round Again" - Catalog No. AWB12-1 on RCA (England), 6:23, 1980. The flip has a live version of "A Love Of Your Own". I also found a CD compilation, "Soul Weekender" that has a 5 plus minute version of "Let's Go...".
