Two very different versions of Cissy Houston's THINK IT OVER

    *****

I've only known the "original" 6 minute 12" version . It appears on her 1977 THINK IT OVER LP

    as thus:

BUT then on her 1979 WARNING-DANGER LP

    ... there is a freshened-up (& IMO much improved , if not a bit long ....) 8:00 minute version

    as thus:

    And ,

here is Cissy performing it in person in 1978

It's amazing how very little was changed on the '79 version but it does sound so much better! Thelma Houston did something similar with 'Satuday Night Sunday Morning' i.e. shorter version on her '(78) Ready To Roll' LP & then an extended version on her '(79) Ride To The Rainbow' LP.

    Oh those Houstons....never satisfied !!

I will check that out .

Apparently Michael Zager hadn't felt he'd properly nailed THINK IT OVER in its first round ,
and decided it was worth the effort to release it again in a version he felt was stronger .... ( love the guitars scratchin' in the intro )

    PS

I just noticed something .....in the song's middle .... from 2:45 to 4:20 and then again around the 6:00 minute mark leading to a nice piano segment .....Cissy's participation has been virtually eliminated !!!!!

( in the original : .........she: never: shuts: up: !)

    (sure miss my smilies )

Yes I noticed that a large quantity of Cissy's adlibs are eliminated from the remix which was a good move as I don't feel that the song needs many - it's far too gothic & zingy to have soulful vocalising. Sorry Cissy, I like your voice but for this song I feel that less is more!

I don't know if I ever paid much attention to this track. I like it! It's got a nice marching beat, and it sounds like those West Coast session guys that played on those Capitol and Motown cuts during the disco era.

Some songs get remixed and they end up being better than before. Originals 'Down To Love Town' and Jackson 5's 'Dancing Machine' are two examples. On the flip side, The Commodores' 'The Bump', originally on Machine Gun, was shortened when they put it on the following LP, Caught In The Act.

In the 80s, I remember West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys being released in the mid 80s, but then I remembered how strange it was that it sounded different when it got more radio play a year or two later. I actually preferred the original mix because that's how I heard it first, and I liked that repeating high keyboard note that sounded like morse code, which was replaced with a cowbell in the remix. But now they both sound pretty good.

Actually the 1979 version of "Saturday Night Sunday Morning" is the original extended mix released first on the Motown 12" M-00013 D1. The original short version was released on the "Ready to roll" album in October 1978. Then a long version was released for the 12" in January 1979 and this same version was available on the subsequent Tamla lp "Ride to the rainbow" in May 1979.

In the case of "Think it over" it was first released on the album with the same name on Private Stock and it charted during Summer 1978. At the end of the year Columbia bought the rights and thought that "Warning-danger" had some disco potential and remixed it for a 12". Finally Columbia released a new album with extended versions of four songs from the original album, including the previous hit "Think it over". One outtake from 1978 wasn't on any of those albums, "Out of my hands", but it ended on 1979 Dionne Warwick's lp "Dionne". And finally a picture of Cissy Houston taken during the photo session for the 1979 album "Warning-danger" is on the back of her 1980 lp "Step aside for a lady". The art of recycling ...
The 1979 long mix of "Think it over"[8:00] is the version available on the cd releases but the rest of the album is in its original 1978 form.

This is intriguing additional information ....thanks for explaining Pierre ....

    SO:
    ....this LP :

is made up entirely of four remixed & extended songs pulled from this

    earlier Private Stock LP :

    Think It Over *
    6:00
    Love Don't Hurt People 3:01
Somebody Should Have Told Me *4:30
    After You 4:38
    Warning - Danger *5:56
I Just Want To Be With You 5:08
    An Umbrella Song * 2:58
    Sometimes 3:33
    I Won't Be The One 3:00

    How exciting!

So when Michael Zager signed on with CBS ..... he took Cissy with him ? ... or maybe at this juncture CBS acquired all things Private Stock ? ... .

Did Michael use the opportunity to re-release some music he'd done with her to give them a second shot???

Now ---and only by carefully looking - I see it ....on the back jacket: teeny tiny pale lettering that reads "This album contains previously released material"l

but with no additional discussion about why this album has come about and no credit given as to WHO remixed these four songs............... ????

Most interesting to be sure ...

WARNING DANGER: this LP contains re-released material
