The first 45 with an A side short version and a B side long version???

    *****

As either a Promo or Commercial 45 .......:icon_question:

An early example I found from 1971 (RCA promo):

    The Nite-Liters

    K-JEE

    (short version) 3.22
    (long version ) 4:02

plays and plays .... four minutes! and then love the shocking end : cold

is there any place more proper than disco to file this ??

I think you can safely file it under "Disco", as this original version by the Nite-liters was used in early Discos according to charts I checked long ago.(# 144 on the 'Disc-o- la fortune 500' chart)

It took me a while back in the mid-70's but was finally able to find this version reissued as part of a 45 rpm "oldies" series.

This was before Saturday Night Fever made the MFSB version popular and better known, I like both versions but I always had a soft spot for the Nite Liter's version.

Edit: I just found my 45 rpm ("Afro-Strut" on the flip), and even though it clocks at 4:02 it doesn't end cold, I guess the YT version is an alternative promo edit or maybe the LP version?

Yep, The NiteLiters version was an every night play AS AN OLDIE when I started playin in 1974.
Around 3:30am, I would play the favorite older (played out) songs for the club. (Jimmy Castor, Intruders, 4 Tops, NiteLiters, New Birth, O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, Barbara Acklin, etc.)

    As far as Short Version/Long Version there were many PROMO 45s like that;
I'm not sure of the commercial copies.

    In 1974 Al Downing's "I'll Be Holding On" was 3:07 / 5:35 on the Promo 45.

B.T.Express' "Do It 'Till You're Satisfied" was also like that on the commercial release. (also in 1974)

Consumer Rapport's "Ease On Down The Road" (1975) was 3 mins on one side over 6 mins the other on the commercial single,

Major Harris' "Each Morning I Wake Up" was a Mono Short Version/Stereo Long Version on an Atlantic Promo 45. (1975)

I know as soon as I shut off the PC, that hundreds of examples will come to mind.

Though this comes later, 6:20 is a long time for 45.
