1985/86 classic "FUNK" is no more , name your fav

By the mid 80's most Funk Bands , according to A&R men at major Record Labels and Distribution companys, had passed their use by date. They began to overlook the established groups in search of new talent , thanx to the emerging/evolving Electro - Rap -House , scene, etc etc . Still their were many Bands putting out good Lp's well into the early 80's , but by 85/86 releases were becoming scarce ,and of mixed quality .Very few of these can be considered classics or groundbreaking.
So my question to you my freinds , What LP's from the mid to late 80's can be considered "classics" must haves if your a Funk collector.
Some of my fave's from the mid 80's are
    KLEER - Seeekret
    Fatback - So Delicious
Mtume - You me & he
So theirs just a few , have fun and respond !
    cheers Jimaras

    Hi Jimaras,

YOU, ME AND HE by MTUME is a 5 star record on my book. Classy and funky as a record can be, this one should be heard by everyone who says "I'm a funk fan".

    Peace,

Try these 85-86 albums out as well:

Ready For The World - Ready For The World (1985)
Con Funk Shun - Electric lady (1985)
Conway Brothers - Turn It Up (1985)
    Skipworth & Turner - Skipworth & Turner (1985)
    Starpoint - It's So Delicious (1985)
The Temptations - Touch me (1985)
Loose Ends - So Where Are You (1985)
Atlantic Starr - As The Band Turns (1985)
Change - Turn On Your Radio (1985)
    Yarbrough & Peoples - Guilty (1985)
Skyy - From the Left Side (1986)
SOS Band - Sands of Time (1986)
    Surface - Surface (1986)
    Klymaxx - Klymaxx (1986)
    Midnight Star - Headlines (1986)
Maze - Live In Los Angeles (1986) - still my favorite non-jazz live album of all time :)
Aleem Feat. Leroy Burgess - Casually Formal (1986)
Con Funk Shun - Burnin' Love (1986)
    Levert - Bloodline (1986)

OK....I'll admit some of these are rather electro sounding in places but they're all great albums. Also try to get a hold of the UK Fatback "Live" album issued in 1987. It has the all important 15 minute version of "I Found Lovin'"

Go-go was the last true funk movement for me, but even by the middle '80s it had gotten too synthetic and weedy. I can't really remember what else I classed as proper 'funk' from those times, apart from these:

    Fatback 'Girls On My Mind'
Ski-Bone 'Take It To The Top'
    Mtume 'Tie Me Up'
Pizazz 'How You Gonna Get Down (If You Don't Get Up)'
    EU 'Sho' 'Nuf Bumpin''
...also tracks like West Phillips' (I'm just a) 'Sucker For Pretty Face'
Terry Burrus & Transe 'Love Rockin'' - but these are a little earlier at '83. Still count...? :D

    Efunk,
Damn...have U been going through my record collection without me knowing it!!

I have all of these you mention.....good to see fellow board members being down with the mid-eighties stuff. it may not be classified as genuine disco - but who cares?? it works for me.

    Forrrce,
about the whole washington go-go thing. you're absolutely right. The style definetely deserves a mention here. Funny thing is...when other classic funk bands (like EWF & Cameo) stripped down to less group members in order to fit into the typical 80's marketing, The go-go bands just got bigger and bigger.
Actually, we had a thread about go go some months ago.

I always thought that this mid-80's funk sound like Jam & Lewis-type productions evolved into what the world now identifies as 'R & B'. I'm not fond of this so-called R & B but I do think its roots are in alot of the tracks u guyz mentioned here. U r right that so much of this music was very good & over-looked like the Kleeer & Fatback stuff u mentioned; can I just mention how much I liked Steve Arrington's stuff from '83 & '84 too- very deep, moody, classy & sexy!
    ...ya gotta beat the street......
