    Midnight Love Affair

I just bought a cd of a Tony Orlando and Dawn album (I know, I know, but I used to love their show as a kid, and I got it for $1) from 1976 and it has the same song as from Carol Douglas released in the same year. Which came first, or are both covers? Or was TD&D hipper than what I remember?

Hey, DiscoPsycho --- as I'm a big Dawn fan (I know, I know, stop giggling), I posted the answer below in a similar thread nearly 2 yrs ago, so enjoy::icon_cool:

Managed to look at some Billboard bks over the weekend, and T.O.&D.'s mellow version of "Midnight Love Affair" hopped onto the Easy Listening/Adult Contemporary charts in March of '76, eventually reaching #15 within a month or so.

Carol Douglas' definitive disco version hit the charts in September, hit # 1 in October . . . and really, really slowly reached a few audiences, where it peaked at #102 months later in February 1977.

Carol Douglas covered other peoples' hits on all her LPs up 'til '78 - Sunny's '74 hit 'Doctors Orders', Abba's 'Dancing Queen', Bee Gees' 'Night Fever' & Hot Chocolate's 'You Win Again', so it's no surprise that she covered a Dawn hit too.

thanks, Sandy, I'd forgotten she'd covered the Bee Gees' "Night Fever" (pretty daring I'd say, as they were certainly a tough act to follow).

And a couple of bits of fun Carol D. trivia:

her name was "up in lights" on the marquee outside Tony Manero's favorite disco in Saturday Night Fever

    -and-

she says she was cousins with the late great Sam Cooke, and was even billed as Carol Cooke early in her career :icon_cool:

I agree, NF was a very strange choice 'cos that was commercially as hot as you could get in '78 - Carol shoulda done a lesser-known Gibb track IMO.

While on the subject of Carol Douglas, am I the only one who loves 'Fell In Love For The First Time Today' but hates the title track it segues into - 'Burnin' - I always fade it before Burnin' appears!
