    Question

Why does everyone here think that Nirvana (and grunge in general) ruined the music industry?

If "Video Killed The Radio Star"...then Grunge killed Dance Rock...that's my theory and I'm stickin' to it.

GRUNGE was either too sloooooow or too faaaaast to dance to.

After Nirvana hit, all the groups that played danceable rock were no longer played on the radio. Geez, even Depeche Mode had to attempt to "GRUNGE-UP" their sound with industrial sludge guitars...otherwise, NO AIRPLAY!!!!

A lot of terrific groups (mostly Brits) bit the dust. No airplay in the U.S. means no sales means no career.

And that's why I blame Nirvana (actually the best of the lot) for the direction the music took circa 1992. Oh, and Gangsta Rap took over R&B stations...and Industrial/Trance lyric-less songs that all sounded the same took over Dance Music...and I decided (as Susie Sorority once said).."To just stay HOME!!!!"

Bitter???? And why shouldn't I be???

Well, Nirvana wasn't supposed to be a dance act. That's simply not the kind of music they played. They were exactly what they intended to be: a rock band. Not all bands are supposed to play dance music. Of course, it comes down to opinion (and I certainly have the minority opinion of Nirvana here), but there is a purpose for every type of music. Besides, why worry about what type of music is popular? As you know, I think that's meaningless. I don't see any reason to be bitter about Nirvana. You know the old expression: different strokes for different folks. By the way, No Doubt has a dance-rock song in "Hella Good". And the Dave Matthews Band song "Too Much" could be danceable. Again, that's a matter of opinion.

Uh, I know Nivana wasn't a dance rock band.

The point is that they ushered in a type of music that caused radio stations to change their playlists to all-grunge, all-the time.

Hence, the groups that had played Dance Rock and were previously played on KROQ...were given NO AIRPLAY and died away.

    That's my point.

BTW, I loved "Hella Good". That was a step in the right direction, IMHO :D

But nobody should blame Nirvana themselves for taking the place of dance-rock or whatever else on the radio. That was out of their hands. And from what I've read, I got the impression that Nirvana were surprised about their success. They were hardly groomed for it. A band that's raw-sounding and punk-influenced? Doesn't sound like a formula for hit albums. But it worked for them. I personally think that bands like them were exactly what the music industry needed (and still do). The funny thing is that what started out as an anti-corporate movement became one of the biggest trends of all time.

Another newer dance-rock song comes to mind: "Get The Party Started" by Pink.

    I just love this topic!!!!

I liked "Smells Like Teen Spirit" since day 1. And I just love every minute of it. :D makes me feel 8) not

I think america just needed a change. and BAMM!!!!! here comes Nirvana! Not only did they have a killer video, the CD had more than 1 good song.

I am still a mobile jock and I try to force that song down peoples throat when they're complaining that I'm playing to much disco... and they say "can you play some white music" flmao    and as soon as I play it, everyone looks at me like wtf??? :o or!!! I'll play Dave Matthews Band... whatever song they think is cool at the moment... and they just stand there like an idiot... I'm like f***ing whatever. Back to disco :D

All of a sudden I want to hear New Order's "Confusion"

I wonder who the next band is gonna take over and change the course of the industry.
