CD-R not playing on Vestax CDX12

I recently bought a new computer and everything was going along swimmingly, but suddenly the CD-R's I'm burning will not play on my Vestax CD player/mixer. I'm using the same brand of CD-R and all the old CD-R's and regular CD's play fine. A friend of mine who is a computer programmer said it might be a lemon of a batch of CD-R's, but they play fine on all my other CD players.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

CDR "brand" means very little, since the actual product is usually contracted out to other suppliers, and brands often change suppliers. As well, formulations have changed a lot over the years.

The problem is likely that the new discs simply don't have strong enough reflectivity to be read by the CDX12. I gather that this is an older unit, probably designed before the era of the CDR, and meant to play aluminum discs.

Thanks for the reply, Bruno. You're always knowledgeable about these issues.

Yes, the CDX12 is an older unit (which I love, but I guess it is time to look into pc mixing, but that's for another thread), but it has always played CDRs, even the ones burned by my new computer. This started incrementally, with CDRs skipping on the CDX12 and then the CDX12 not reading them at all, although sometimes if I let the disc spin around long enough, the mixer will finally read the CDR, but still not consistently.

I've been using Roxio to burn the CDRs from mp3s. Any history of problems with Roxio?

Sounds to me like the laser on the Vestax is starting to go.

But if you're making discs from MP3s anyway, it might be time to look at Serato or Traktor.

I've had a similar problem, but with a twist: CDrs I've made using my computer's sound card produce a "No Disc" message when I put them in a CD boombox, even when "Disc made successfully" shows at the end of the burning process and they play fine in the computer.

Again, the discs are probably not reflective enough for the laser in the boombox to be able to read them. The audio CD was not intended to be a recordable format, so such problems are fairly typical.

Your laser is most likely going if you notice it on other cd-r discs that used to work fine.

Nope. Only the recent ones. Just can't understand what's going on.

Just an update: I bought a different brand of cdrs and now everything is fine. Don't know what happened. Don't know if I changed something accidentally on the Roxio program. All I know is I'm happy now. Thanks for all the insights, though.

that has happened to me too and I started freaking because I wanted to play home made CDrs from records that I had already sold! I thought I'd have to go out and buy all the records again and make the CDrs again. An additional problem I had is that when I'd put CDrs into my CD boombox a message would appear on the screen that read "No disc". To add to the confusion, I'd also get the "no disc" message on my CD boombox sometimes even when I was playing a PRE-RECORDED Cd! After I regained my composure I had the idea to began experimenting with different players on my computer. I discovered I was having the problem primarily with Real Player and Roxio computer CD playing software. I switched to Windows Media Player and now I can play the CDrs, but for some odd reason the titles of the songs don't show even though I inputted the titles when I recorded the CDrs. You may want to try that. I have a feeling that some of the manufacturers of computer CD software players take some kind of steps to make CDrs difficult or impossible to play as a way of limiting or preventing duplication of recordings. I may very well be wrong about that but it's just a feeling I have. On a related subject, yesterday I was playing a pre-recorded CD on my portable CD player and it stopped cold and began spinning in reverse! Spooky stuff. 5/15/2010
