    Vinyl to HD woes...

I'm using a Fisher MT-273 Turntable through a Pioneer SX-780 before my sound card. In certain areas of songs it sounds like popping or fluttering (much like speaking through a fan), to my understanding the problem here is my Hard drive may be too slow in the recording process. Most of the music comes through excellent, but certain passages these popping becomes apparant... re recording does not help.

Filters will not help this as it's truly not a pop like a vinyl pop but a digital pop. I'm using Gold Wave as my software at this point, & recording to Wave initally for editing purposes which usually had been giving great results.

Any solutions other than a faster cleaner Hard Drive, or a new PC?

Do you hear this popping sound on the record itself?
Is the input overloading the sound card?
Is there clipping on the waveform?

No vinyl pops on the record. No clipping or overloading at all in the wave, in fact I set the levels a bit lower then will equalize them higher (if needed) within the editing process.

Really strange thing is that the same style passage elsewhere on the same record will be fine... I'm really quite pleased with results but seems at least one passage within a song will exhibit this 'popping'. I've thought of the clipping myself too, if that's what I'm actually hearing here, but it's not overloading in the waveform.

I was thinking my PC equipment was old as the only logical reason why this is happening. Years ago I did this on the same PC/software/equipment without issues... my drive could be fragmented, but one would think that re-recording may yield correction in the bad parts & other passages would become bad, this isn't the case though which is why this is so strange. :icon_confused:

I'm thinking that the culprit is your PC power supply. Power regulates everything we do on computers, and depending on your I/O....little things will start to go here and there. I've seen this before in a roomful of dedicated PCs at my old job and it was the internal power supply (not the cord- though it may be that as well).

Do you have any other cache issues when running programs?
If so, you might also want to expand your memory a bit (RAM).

    Good Luck~!!

Oh do I have issues with this PC!! :icon_biggrin:, for starters this is a Pentium 2 running 98 (yeah I know what you are going to say here!) :icon_lol: This has a Yamaha Sound card & I never had these issues when I ripped vinyl about 5-6 years ago on this machine. Everything has been upgraded on this machine with the exception of the Motherboard Processor & the Soundcard. An upgraded PS was installed in '04.... memory maxxed out!

Me thinking the internet bogered this puppy up (esp the Hard Drive), was thinking of making this a dedicated machine for Audio, & running Amateur Radio Software. I have a newer machine with Vista which I'm very disappointed with.

Again this machine worked wonderful for ripping once upon a time perhaps it needs a good cleaning &/or new Hard Drives with format.

I once had to provide support for a friend on a similar problem.

His installation was made from a computer of about the same generation.

I've lost a lot of time trying to tweak the available RAM, augmenting the disk cache, defrag the HD, and finally re-installing the OS without much success.

After many many hits and misses, we ended up having the setup to work properly but I could not tell exactly what fixed the problem (see below).

The problem was fixed by doing one or more of the following actions (I don't know which one fixed it because we did all these steps in one session):

    • We've upgraded the computer BIOS,
    • We've loaded the latest drivers for the motherboard chipset,
    • We've loaded the latest drivers for the sound card

    Hope this helps.

p.s.: If, after trying this it still doesn't work, try to install Windows XP. Before proceeding, make sure that your sound board has the proper drivers for it or it will be worthless to do so.

I believe that it could worth the try.
