    Help With Patrick Adams Projects

Thanks to a friend, I'm just being introduced to the lesser-known works of Patrick Adams. I was familiar with the material in Musique/Venus Dodson/Inner Life/Universal Robot Band etc-- but I was impressed also with some of these more obscure works I recently heard. What I'm wishing for-- probably from a hard-core Adams fan-- is the year the following records were released. If songwriting credits could be provided, then I'd be ecstatic. I believe all of these were produced by Adams and perhaps Peter Brown.

    Surrender by Rainbow Brown
    Johnson Jumpin' by Johnson Products
Get Down Boy by Paper Dolls
    New York Moving by Ahzz
Super Jay's Love Theme by Super Jay
I Did It Again by Jessie Henderson

These may not all be accurate, but at most they'll be a year out. Adams's roll-call is indeed a long one but as a fan for 20-odd years, I have a fairly decent recollection of his disco output. As for credits, give me a while to dig 'em out!

discodjinn: If you want to hear some of the more obscure Patrick Adams stuff, get copies of the Disco Juice and Disco Juice 2 CDs, if you don't have them already. They consist of tracks from Harlem's P & P Records (Peter Brown and Patrick Adams), and include all the tracks you have listed apart from Rainbow Brown's "Surrender".

Neither of these CDs have years on the sleeve notes, unfortunately.

Those Disco Juice CDs are godsends for the Adams collector. Actually, I heard most of the tracks on a friend's Super Disco CD-- another in the same P&P series. I have it on order... but I feel a strong temptation to try to collect the original 12" records. I have a feeling this would be a daunting task, given the obscurity of the releases and the probably high cost of each. Just when I think I've patched in most of the categories of my record collection, along comes sign of some new vein of talent to be mined! I've found that any credit information I can arm myself with helps with the record hunt-- thanks for the assistance.

BTW, the liner notes of the 2002 Super Disco CD mentioned an "upcoming" film about P&P productions and Peter Brown, as well as a P&P website. I haven't been able to track either of these down as yet.

    Correct.

Even finding someone willing to part with any P&P release is a tough task. And if you do, these records often go for absurd amounts of money. I think these have to be the most "collectable" (translation: high-priced and hard-to-find) disco records out there.

Here's most of your info, discodjinn:

Surrender by Rainbow Brown - Adams
Johnson Jumpin' by Johnson Products - Kevin Johnson
Get Down Boy by Paper Dolls - Harvey Miller
New York Moving by Ahzz - Osborn Hunter, Steve Boston
Super Jay's Love Theme by Super Jay - cannot find my copy at this moment, but the vocal version, 'Santa's Rap Party', is penned by Brown, Lonnie & Millie I Did It Again by Jessie Henderson - can't find this either - and I have it on two labels! The original was by Bobby Cutchins on the Lasso label ('76 if I remember) and said imprint re-issued the Henderson version some years ago, without the proper b-side.

I have a head start with the Queen Constance empire, having been collecting these records since 1984. They were quite regular in 2nd hand shops at times and truth be told, most of them are pretty unprofessional, through to downright poor. The best tracks are easily things like Clyde Alexander & Sanction, Frank Stack, Paper Doll ('...Cornbread Time') some of the Cloud One pieces and a few of the rap items. You'll be chasing them to the end of the earth, though - as Graham Start says they are the holy grail of the moment and although I have a shelf and a half of titles, (I cringe when I think of all the things I used to leave!) I still get asked about tracks (even labels) I've never seen before. Even though I had my own reasons for collecting them, I'm a bit puzzled about the current fascination and silly prices. But be careful what you buy - I have blues, gospel, R&B and rock items on Queen Constance 12s (not good examples, either...and still waiting for a reggae track!) as well as disco...

I bought that 2nd "Disco Juice" CD and I thought it was totally forgettable. I played it once and filed it away. What's the big deal?

Oh, and I thought the Peter Brown connected with this was thee Peter Brown ( Dance With Me/Can't Be Love-Do It To Me Anyway)--but, alas, he wasn't.

I have heard others express the same sentiments. Peronally, I often wonder the same thing about Prince, but he certainly has his fans. Anyway, even Adams' weaker productions are still more enjoyable than 99% of what's coming out today, so...

I am a big P Adams fan, and collect all that obscure works he released on obscure labels. I have a lot of those 12" but, believe me, they cost a fortune and are very very hard to find.
I filed all the productions I know and you can see the file at Jan's MetaSoul site:
    http://www.jahsonic.com/

Another site where you can get a lot of info is Patrick's one:

One Patrick Adams production that rarely gets a mention is "Super Casanova" by - gulp! - Hot Gossip, out in 1979.

Thanks SO much for the help all; like many generous folks on this website, Forrrce, you went beyond reasonable expectations to offer rare bits of information. While I flirt with the idea of tracking down these records-- if that's even possible-- I think the cautionary remarks about inflated prices may cool my enthusiasm.

How interesting to hear the comments about the quality of some of these. Really, out of the two-disc "Super Disco" set it was really only five or six tracks that caught my ear. I always thought it would be sacrilege to voice my opinion that Adams' work is extremely variable. He has produced some powerful singles (and rarely produced a complete lp, it seems)-- but at the same time he appears to have been so busy that much of the stuff sounds thrown together. Yet there are many fans so vocal in their idolizing I've been scratching me head at what I was missing in these little projects. I guess I'm not alone in thinking a lot of discrimating choice makes for a good Adams compilation.

I think the first CD is far superior to the second. But "New York Moving" on Vol 2 really kicks ass.
