Best From Artist 45 - Patti LaBelle and LaBelle

I'm gonna hit it with the ladies one more time
Patti sometimes (ok, most of the time) is over the top for me. But there were several occasions when her style matched the music. My choice for this group is "What Can I Do For You." Surprised huh NIcky :D
Of course I also like "Lady Marmalade" and "Music Is My Way Of Life."

I've never really been a big fan of Patti Labelle but I do love "Stir it Up" from the Bever Hills Cop Soundtrack. Especially the extended version from the 12". 80's cheese...I know but I luv it.

Also, Labelle (The group) made a track named "Moonshadow" way back in 1972 (originally a Cat Stevens Song). it's starts out a bit ordinary but then turns into a largely instrumental and very funky jam. The best thing they ever did, methinks.
    There was life after disco!!

My choices would have to be

"Lady Marmalade"--much better than the Christina Aguilera disaster from a couple of years ago.

"On My Own"--The duet with Michael McDonald.

I'll go with "Lady Marmalade". But I can't stand the remake of that song. I also think it's a disaster.

Miss Patti LaBelle is a powerhouse singer, unfortunately given to excessive over-singing--BECAUSE SHE CAN!!!!! My fave Disco cut from the solo career is the infectious "Music Is My Way Of Life" with a terrific John Luongo mix. I listened to this in the car recently and thought this could be my candidate for a song with a great intro. A kick ass hook- dah-dah, dah-dah, da-da-da that works your feet for maximum dancing potential. This was a Troc treat. I still recall Bobby V teasing that hook under other songs....screwing with your mind (Did I just hear that?)...and letting you know that it was coming up soon in the program.

"New Attitude" is a high energy 1980's cheese whiz that was a fave of mine too.

From the LaBelle career: "What Can You Do For Me" & "Lady Marmalade" are the masterpieces. These were from the Buzzby's era in SF: bringing back memories of my first months in SF--I'll never forget 'em. :D

Labelle is obviously well-known in Australia for their hit "Lady Marmalade" and the song has recently been redone by some group for the movie "Moulin Rouge".

Anyhow my picks for this group are:
Far As We Felt Like Goin' 1973
What Can I Do For You 1974
    Lady Marmalade 1974
    Space Children 1974
    Slow Burn 1975
    Messin' With My Mind 1975
    Get You Somebody New 1976

    Hey Nrg & Outsider

"Lady Marmalade" is my favorite from LaBelle and I just like you, HATE  the remake done by Lil Kim, Pink, Mya and Christina C. It's everything from the video to the clothes to the added rap lyrics from Kim. YUCK YUCK YUCK  !!!!!

Just one more thing on this topic. One of the things that kept me hooked on "What Can I Do For You" was the percussion work. A little research at AMG showed that the Meters were the session musicians for that song as well as that album. Nice work. I've seen that group mentioned here a few times but aside from their name, I really don't know much about their music. I guess if I come across there albums at a bargain sale, I'll grab one.

"What Can I Do for You" --- Everytime I play it I like it more and more. And Paul, I found my 45 and the ending is different from the lp as I remembered. If you have both versions you should give listen. The 45 rocks!

"Moonshadow" --- Another Gallery classic. Love the breakdown.

"Music is My Life" --- Too hot for words. Patti at her best.

"Oh, People" --- Love this and the 12" instrumental just floats.

Being a Pink fan, I'll never understand why she got involved with that mess in the first place. But she completely redeemed herself with the "Missundaztood" album.

Should I be Jealous Nicky? I have "What Can I Do For You" on the "Give Your Body Up To The Music" cd. I'm not sure what version they used for the cd. You are so right though. Everything works so well in that song that I love it more and more each time.

I like a few of Patti Labelle :D

    Lady Marmalade
    Messin' With My Mind
What Can I Do For You

Whoever came up with the idea of doing a remake of the classic "Lady Marmalade" is an idiot.... a new millenium remake? omg!!!! the remake is complete and total loss I must say... everytime I heard that on the radio, I wanted to hurrle.

Now if we we're doing a top ballads pole.... "If Only You Knew" would rank in my Top 10 somewhere. 8)

    An absolute classic!
