DISCO : Happy Music For Where The Happy People Go : well usually

    *****

It strikes me ....although it should be no surprise really ....that virtually ALL the songs on Marky's current charts beginning the disco year of 1977 are each of them uplifting & postively themed :icon_cool: :icon_mrgreen: :icon_cool:

No downers amongst them (almost) ....

    That's because disco ......well ..... that's where the happy people go ... :icon_mrgreen:. :icon_cool:...

    Given that
its a bit of a jolt, a bit of an anomaly then , that a real tear jerker is the current number one song in the clubs ::icon_eek:

    01) (01) DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY/ ANY WAY YOU LIKE IT - THELMA HOUSTON

    I can't survive .... can't stay alive :icon_cry: :icon_cry: :icon_sad: :icon_cry:
( Poor Thelma --- sure wasn't any Gloria Gaynor )

    02) (04) ["THE TEA DANCE" LP]: OVERTURE/ DON'T KEEP IT IN THE SHADOWS/ INDISCREET/ O BA BA (No Reino da Mae Do Ouro) - D.C. LaRue
    03) (03) ANOTHER STAR/ I WISH/ SIR DUKE/ ISN'T SHE LOVELY - Stevie Wonder
    04) (02) " FOUR SEASONS OF LOVE" (LP-all cuts) – Donna Summer
    05) (15) MAGIC'S IN THE AIR /BOY, I REALLY TIED ONE ON [medley] - Esther Phillips
    06) (06) DANCIN’/ SEARCHING FOR LOVE/ FAR OUT – Crown Heights Affair
    07) (09) DAZZ - Brick
    08) (17) LOVE IN MOTION/ CUT THE RUG/ GIVIN' BACK THE FEELING - George McCrae
    09) (--) *DISCO INFERNO/ *STARVIN'/ *BODY CONTACT CONTRACT - The Trammps
    10) (10) CAR WASH - Rose Royce

heck when it comes to disco ...even working at the car wash is a blast
    .....

I suppose I WISH by Stevie Wonder could be categorized as an upbeat downer too ......

why did those days ever have to go ....I miss them so ....
    :icon_cry: :icon_cry:

Beyond that, correct if I'm wrong

but the rest of the 130 tunes Marky lists this week ....

all are disco glory hallelujahs :icon_mrgreen:

So what about some other songs from other times in the disco parade that don't fit the get on up and boogie mold

Jean Carnes WAS THAT ALL IT WAS comes to mind .....

    others?????

"Boy, I Really Tied One On" is on the cynical downer side of disco, too; more jaded ennui than slit-your-wrists--but not very joyful or uplifting. Or is it a wake-up call? Hmmmmm........Sorta "I ain't gonna do that again...." ?

Janis Ian Boy I Really Tied one on Lyrics:
Boy, I really tied one on.
I spent the night away from home,
I know you're not to blame.
If I can't recall your name,
And I'm sorry if it causes you pain.

Boy, I really lost my head.
I woke up in a double bed,
Allow me the pleasure of taking your measure,
    Though I'm sure you ain't nobody's treasure.
And I know it isn't ladylike
To do what I've done tonight.

Wake up, I've got news for you.
    Nobody's knocking at your door.
    Nobody's gonna pull you through.
Nobody needs you anymore, yeah, yeah.
    Nobody's knocking at your door.

Boy, I went around the bend.
    Thought I'd made a life-long friend.
Imagine my surprise when I looked into your eyes,
And I saw the kind of friends you meant.

I think I'm gonna take the cure,
I'm going on the wagon for sure.
I may feel a fool for a Sunday or two,
But it's better than a Sunday with you.
And I know it isn't ladylike
To do what I've done tonight.

Wake up, I've got news for you.
    Nobody's knocking at your door.
    Nobody's gonna pull you through.
Nobody needs you anymore, yeah, yeah,
    Nobody's knocking at your door.

Wake up, I've got news for you.
    Nobody's knocking at your door.

    [Instrumental to end.]

'Another lover hits the dust, so much for all the time & trust'...'Cathedrals' by Dc Larue has a rather acidic content to the lyrics.:icon_confused: Actually, DC's lyrics must generally rate as among the most interesting lyrics in disco songs I think.
    ...ya gotta beat the street......

....and don't forget about Teddy P's impassioned, pleading vocals on 1973's "The Love I Lost" (credited to Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes), which was one of the first, REALLY fast-paced early-disco tunes that filled the dance floors.

Those mournful lyrics spun over Earl Young's amazing hi-hat drumming don't get me in a down mood, fortunately --- they quite successfully make me wanna dance each time I hear it. Result is a disco classic with rare, non-upbeat lyrics.

A lot of Philly songs have uptempo music, but the lyrics aren't exactly happy.

    Here are some examples

But I'm surprised no one mentioned this dancefloor downer yet.

Let's not forget Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You."

Funny how that lamentation seemed as something proper to dance to when you think about it .....:icon_surprised:

    same with :

    CHER CHEZ LA FEMME

now he's alone he's got no women and no home
for misery oh- ho, cherchez la femme

    Minnie, Minnie Bonita's very upset
she's sick and tired of living in debt
    tired of roaches
    tired of rats
    I know she is

    poor misery

    :icon_cry::icon_cry::icon_cry::icon_cry:

    --- wanna dance?

    yes I'd love too!

    .

    .

Need a serious downer? Try Chrisland's "Angela Angel" a fast zipping 1977 marathon from Munich, with anguished lyrics about a mentally unstable teenager slipping away into drug addiction from his lover who "loved her when she was still a child"(!!!?). No Youtube link, though.
And how about this, another death song done to disco beats?:

YouTube - DALIDA - MOURIR SUR SCENE

It's the legendary Dalida, the most tragic of all larger than life disco chanteuses. She also had this wonderful but not exactly happy song:

YouTube - DALIDA Quand s'arretent les violons
