I was in Chicago at the time this 12" came out, I would hear the 12" played in it's entirety some nights, but usually heard the songs played separately, most of the DJ's I knew, thought the edit into "Boy I really Tied One On" was very abrupt.
Would you play the whole "Magic's in the Air/Boy, I Really Tied One On" 12-inch or would you skip the "Magic's" part and mix directly into "Boy" at around 2:36? I'm curious because the Billboard charts are mostly just listing the "Boy" part (this could for space reasons because it's a long title and space was at a premium--so abbreviations took place)---or is the first part a drag? --slow circus calliope opening, beat doesn't really kick in until :36---different tone in two songs? :icon_eek::icon_question::icon_confused:
The LP versions were very short--but were getting some club notice--then Kudu quite ingeniously decided to mix them together into a 12-inch for the clubs. Just wondering how it was actually played--in totality-- or just the "Boy, I Really Tied One On" part? :icon_confused::icon_question::icon_confused:
just for fun, here's a "live version" of the original "Boy, I Really Tied One On" by the composer/artist, Janis Ian

Here's another one that enters the Top 10 on January 15, 1977--where the label combined 2 album tracks into one 12-inch....this time it's almost seamless because the two tunes are so similar....

The LP versions were played separately and together, by the NY / NJ DJ's I'd gone to hear, that had 2 copies.
Mainly because the LP versions had better mixes.
And the LP version of "Boy, ..." had a long enough intro for overlays.
The remixes done for the 12" concentrated more on the clav & bass.
Which only served to make them sound flat.
Also, the slip-cue segue between them, on the 12", could easily be done live, with 2 copies of the LP.
And was commonly done in the reverse order. (ie: "Boy, I Really Tied One On" into "Magic's In The Air")
P.S. Vince Montana Jr. (Salsoul Orchestra) was co-writer of "Magic's In The Air"

I have the original 12" of "Love In Motion", by itself, and during the break (as well as the chorus, if you're listening for it...) the groove is duplicated (remarkably closely) for the break-bassline in love & kisses' "I Found Love...", recorded just 2 months later.

It surprises me that I really don't recall this one :icon_confused:,
seeing that its playing quite well in SF ....
suggesting that back then while so many others did ,
this one didn't grab me .
But just from observing the charts .....
independently these songs have charted modestly for the past two months so there seems to be a correlation with the release of this 12" which combines the two and their catapulting into the Top Ten .
