I'm on another day after a Remember the Party event achy high. Exhausted but soooo happy!!
One of my friends left me a message earlier today to tell our DJ Jerry Bonham, "He really OUTDID himself last night!!! Myself and all of my friends just loved it, LOVED it! We had a blast honey! God, I want to go to one of those every other month!" :icon_biggrin:
I so agree, well I don't know if this body could handle every other month! Once a year is good!!
So what about the set? I think you'll agree that Jerry is superb when it comes to creating a imaginative set of music flawlessly expressing the theme of the party. However, for this Close Encounters Of The Disco Kind theme, he stretched his creativeness to new levels!! The combinations of songs were so unexpected.
In fact, several people in attendance had set up a betting pool about a week or two before (with real cash!!!) as to what songs Jerry would play during the peaks of the party. They all lost! :icon_lol:
So, as we put together the Playlist for our 9 plus hour set for your viewing enjoyment, let me ask you - if you were participating in that bet, what songs do you think Jerry would play at the peak of the party??? Be creative because he was!!![]()
Mission To Venus by Silver Convention? I Lost My Heart To a Starship Trooper by Hot Gossip? Air Force by Space? Eve Of The War by Jeff Wayne? Meteor Man by Dee D. Jackson? Cosmic Melody by Constellation Orchestra? Extraterrestrial Lover by Sylvia Love? Starship Love by Starzarus? Salsoul 3001 by Salsoul Orchestra? Galaxy Of Love by Crown Heights Affair? Nightflight To Venus by Boney M? Galaxy by War? Space Princess by Lonnie Liston Smith? Will I be receiving any winnings?
...ya gotta beat the street......
Hmmm...well I was thinking.....maybe stuff like...
[update:]
I got a little carried away here. I started typing "Space Invaders, The Eve Of The War, Twilight Zone" and lotsa Patrick Cowley titles...then I kept on typing ...and typing....and typing... and after a few hours, I felt maybe it got out of hand. It's not about me but the actual party. So I erased it. Someone suggested I restore it....so in light of Keefe's first question: "What would you expect to hear at a Troc party titled "Close Encounters of The Disco Kind"????...as a former Trocette, I offer up what I envision would be played.
This is just a random grouping of records...I did this in my mind...so bpms are sometimes incompatible. A lot of rearranging, adding and subtracting would be needed to make this work. And it's mostly on the dark side....would need to lighten it up.

From my perspective, Jerry's set was the most imaginative he's ever done for RTP. He connected songs on so many levels — lyrically, thematically, musically, emotionally. Of course he always does that, but this one was full of surprises that even the track list won't reveal. There were so many WOAH! moments that conveyed a sense of being on a journey and not knowing what comes next. Jerry has that knack for being simultaneously smooth AND suspenseful, and there were a few times when he reminded me of Peanuts when Lucy holds the football for Charlie Brown and then yanks it away at the last minute, sending him sailing into the air.
The difference with Jerry is that you always land safely.
Mark, you should have left your list up. You probably would have been kicked out of the betting pool because you were suppose to guess the PEAK songs, not the whole evening. :icon_lol::icon_lol:
Barry, you described Jerry's RtP CEOTDK set perfectly!!
I think the following list of the first 20 songs we experienced on Sunday night gives you a good idea of what Barry talked about!
001 A Space Ship Lands Emitting Silvery Light - Tomita
002 Welcome Aboard - The Love Unlimited Orchestra (Presents Webster Lewis)
003 Starchild - Level 42
004 Countdown (Captain Fingers) - Lee Ritenour
005 Sneakers (Fifty-Four) - Sea Level
006 Above and Beyond - Edgar Winter
007 Sequencer - Al Di Meola
008 Dancing Machine - Jackson 5
009 Outa-Space - Billy Preston
010 Don't Stop - K.I.D.
011 A Little Bit Of Jazz - The Nick Straker Band
012 Take Your Time (Do It Right) - The S.O.S. Band
013 For Those Who Like To Groove - Ray Parker Jr. and Raydio
014 At Midnight - T-Connection
015 Galaxy - War
016 Magic Fly - Kebekelektrik
017 Dancer - Gino Soccio
018 Let's All Chant - The Michael Zager Band
019 Makes You Blind - The Glitter Band
020 Zodiacs - Roberta Kelly
Wow Keefe I can't believe it's that time of year again. I give up as to what Jerry played at the peak, where is the playlist? I am also looking forward to you posting your first video clip, and when will the box set be ready? Sounds like an amazing time once again and I wish I was there!
I'm absolutely blown away to learn that this got played in a club.
BTW, I really, really wanted to go to this event this year, and I was all set to... but when I was at Flashdance, it was right after the whole Prop 8 thing, and my friends told me that they figured everyone would be at the march in DC because it was more important.
Well, guess what... two weeks before the march, apparently they decided they weren't going, at which point it was too late for me to book time off work, arrange travel, etc. So now I get to hear about what an awesome event it was and how I should've been there...
*sigh*
Keefe-Another fantastic set! I love the oddball surprises like Billy Preston's
"Out a Space"(my high school "Soul Train" years)and Ray Parker's funky
under rated "For Those Who Like To Groove" and Edgar Winter's "Above and Beyond".And any comp that has "Makes You Blind" on it,goes right to the front of the class.Keefe-quick question.Jerry usually sends me an email when the new CD's are ready-will he do this again or do I need to re
sign up on something? Can't wait to read your forthcoming run down of the night. Thanks Thom
Woo Hoo! They sent me home because we have no power in our building in Sherman Oaks!! So now I can play disco games!Thank you rain. It really should never rain in Southern California because everything stops working when it does. Luckily I have power in Hollywood...unfortunately I also have a very unreliable computer. :icon_evil: But I'll give it a try.
Loved reading the first part of JB's playlist.
Here are my thoughts:
Setting the cosmic space theme with Tomita and then launching into the ethereal, trippy opening of "Welcome Aboard"...the cool, mellow toe-tapping cha cha rhythm is just a perfect set opener....long instrumental passage before the singers beckon you onto the dance floor "Welcome aboard...you don't need no reservation... all you need is you...music is your ticket ( female whispers "First Class")...hope you enjoy it too...welcome aboard." Love this track.
Followed by another jazzy funk fave of mine Level 42's "Starchild." " Searching for the magic in the universe/ Gliding by the stars that light my way/I have seen the sunshine rise in paradise/ I am just a Starchild born in space/ If you want to go with me, I'll take you there/ I've been shown these secrets face to face/ I have seen the sunshine rise in paradise/ I am just a Starchild born in space"....into Lee Ritenour's "Countdown (Captain Fingers") ..."This is the countdown baby, this is the countdown."
Then he plays a couple I don't know: Sea Level [update: I do have this Sea Level track on a cd: "Move To Groove: The Best of '70's Jazz Funk"] & Al Di Meola with Edgar Winter's "Above & Beyond" in between ....but then reaches back in time for the gems I always hope to hear from the early Seventies...Billy Preston's "Outa-Space" and the Jackson Five's "Dancing Machine" --the pre-Troc stuff you dream of hearing played at Troc. (I'll never forget when Robbie Leslie played "You Little Trustmaker" by the Tymes at the first party. I almost came in my pants. Ok, I kid.But it did pull me onto the dancefloor for the first time that night. Such a treat!)
With the theme established, the DJ has to integrate the "party aspect" into the party with some dancing tunes. This is the careful balancing act that I pay special attention to--knowing how to interweave the cosmic space theme with the earthly party. The crowd can't trip out all night--you gotta make 'em dance. And this is what Jerry does so beautifully. So K.I.D., Nick Straker Band, S.O.S. Band, Ray Parker & T-Connection move the party groove forward. Then the cosmic spacey theme returns with War's "Galaxy" and Kebekleltik's "Magic Fly." Back to the groove with Gino Soccio, Michael Zager Band, and the Glitter Band...back to theme (I wondered if he would play this)...Roberta Kelly's "Zodiacs." I bet it sounds great. Just imagining it....I'm kvelling and I'm not even Jewish.:icon_exclaim::icon_lol:
Can't wait for the next installment.
