Hi Disco Funk, Some nice tunes there. The Oliver Sain tune was played in the UK helped by its re-issue on Contempo

And as for you Dan, of course I'm a mind reader ... I am the Scientist.

Lets go back to Philly. This was a single from a great lp

Hey Discofunk, Nice little line up you gave us there, I played "One Fine Day" BITD the others, well, you are right! Thanks for the post!!:icon_cool:

Yeah Scientist, guess you are the mind reader! :icon_biggrin:

I know that most of you are familiar with this now classic song, but I thought that I would post it anyway. Although it is listed as a "1974" release, my copy has 1973 on it.

Yes, that was Tom Moulton's idea to have it a continuous mix on Side A.

There was one earlier than Gloria's "Never Can Say Goodbye" LP.

It was a Polydor/Spring Disco Compilation that was released in 1974.
It was Disco mixed (ok for that time period) and featured all their artists plus a couple of guests (Barry, Timmy Thomas)

Thanks for the info Jay Negron. I found this article which mentions this LP.

Mixtape - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Is there any mention on the sleeve who did the mix ?

No mention of who did the mix.
We assumed it was a studio engineer.
Crossfades were 2 seconds the most and mostly NOT on beat.

Lyn Collins into Millie Jackson was a screamer though.
I used to use it at times.

    Hi Jay
This was one of the first topics I brought to this board when joining back in 2005 .... now five years go :icon_eek: ... fun to go back and reread what was said then :

    non-stop disco album from ---!! 1974!

I found the LP interesting because it was already using the word "disco" to describe club music ...certainly the first reference I've come across. I didn't fully catch its significance in the way you have ....it being also the first to present to the outside world a concept which also made
    disco music : "disco" ...
the blending of the tunes into each other .

The creators of this compilation were very aware of the point though which they explained in the LP's ecstatic liner notes :

DISCO PAR-R-R-TY album liner notes :
    ________________________________

There's a new spirit at work here ... something more in tune with the spirit of the times ... and the taste of the now audience... A spirit which has pulled out all the stops ... We're having a party and everyone's invited...

Disco Par-r-r-ty --- a slice of life ... a page in history :icon_cool: :icon_cool:... just plain brilliant stomping, shaking , thrilling ,chilling rocking soul ... with an appeal aimed as much at the white audience as it is at the black....

Disco Par-r-r-ty ... an all-star cast which can't miss : James Brown, Barry White, Timmy Thomas, Millie Jackson , Joe Simon and many more. 14 kinetic cuts hitting with tremendous immediacy and force ... in a totally artistic way... beautifully balanced ... powerfully produced ... barely controlled... unleashed to overwhelm the listener... but moreover,

Disco Par-r-r-ty is a dance album. The definitive dance album ... completely captures the feel of a discotheque in its snappy, innovative excursion into extended performance .. A sustained work-out which never seems to get old through endless playings ... You can't just listen to it ... You've got to get down with it ... rollback the rug and parrty ... right here , right now .... The album's devoted to continuity ... catchy rhythms, energetic vocals blending together ... the sound's tight and distinctive ... professional and polished ... never contrived or stylized ... Signature songs... 14 masterpieces of composition and performance ... a run of classics all the way... Each one's a flash ... as soon as it sinks in, you're socked with another ... burning, charging , grinding at break-neck pace ... The effect is cumulative ... with each three minute spin off building and dissolving into the next ...

Disco Par-r-r-ty -- the stand-out album ... where you can't sit down ... The par-r-r-ty's within the cuts .... not between them ... So get down and get with it!

    .................Linda M. George

--- an amazing description of disco music .... BEFORE there was disco music ...... ---
    :icon_cool:

As "disco" , I like this cut from the collection the best :

it seems to best represent the new TO EACH HIS OWN attitude that was taking hold within this dancing subculture

I don't want nobody .........telling me HOW to live MY life .....

    You only live but once
and when you're dead you're gone
    and while I live
I'm surely gonna have my fun

I don't want nobody .........telling me HOW to live MY life .....

Thanks for posting the sleeve notes Remicks. I was wondering how you mix from Joe Simon to Act 1 and the the answer is - badly.

Its a shame the Act 1 tune is so short as it has a good groove

Heres a classic. The A side was the original version and the B side was the Disco version which has it all - horns, an ecstatic trumpet sound and a dominant hi-hat. Love it !!!

Here is one of my favorites from BITD, this is when Eddie Kendricks was at his peak. You know, before Patrick Adams produced him.

    Date With the Rain - - - - a super classic.

YouTube - Eddie Kendricks: date with the rain (Tamla)
So Guys, Was "Date with the rain" released on a 7" back in '72 after all?

'Date with rain' was a dance floor anthem played in every club in miami way into the mid-seventies, and for me it was impossible to find as late as '75-'76.

I first got it on one of those Motown Comp LP (name?), as I was told by shop clerks that it was never released on 45 rpm, only the LP, and the "People Hold on" album that also includes "Girl you need a change of mind" was so popular that it was next to impossible to find.

It was not until later that I was able to get a "proper" copy of "Date with the rain" on the flip side of the 7" of "Going up in smoke" ('76) and didn't find a copy of "People hold on " LP until much later, and a used one at that.

I still have here a '78 mix I did, where I play around with "date with the rain", and you can hear the mastering differences between the 1976 7" version (more bass) and the Comp LP version. I hate that!:icon_evil:

Hi Mixmachine, I believe 'Date with the rain' was an lp cut only til 76 when it was the b side to 'Born Again'. Motown definately missed an opportunity there !! Its on Disc-O-Tech vol 2 from 75 so Motown must have realised its disco popularity. As far as I know, Motown never released an extended version. There are some unofficial extended versions around - check Youtube and Discogs.
The recent cd re-issues of Eddies lps are worth getting as the sound quality is v good + some previously unissued tunes

Thanks Scientist (Disco Scientist? :icon_mrgreen:)so basically this is the same info I had.

And yes, Disc-o-Tech vol 2 its the name of the first Motown Comp LP with "date with the rain" on it, I just found it here, and you are also correct, the 7" of "born again" is the one with "date with the rain" on the flip side, I remember how exiting it was to find this 7" in 1976 with the elusive long sought after 'bonus' cut from 1972!:icon_razz:

Discodisk, even though the 7" is stamped with '72 and '76 corresponding with the respective release dates, you're probably right.

I remember that this 7" came out of nowhere, and by the time of this 7" release "date with the rain" was not as popular with the new crowds, used mainly by Deejays during "oldies" sets.

I think it was released as part of some kind of "oldies" series re-prints (even though the label doesn't state this), if i'm not mistaken, I believe I found my copy under the "oldies" section as soon as it was released.

Thats a good point Mixmachine. By 76/77, Date with the rain was an oldie. I think Eddie left Motown around this time so perhaps the single was a cash in.

    Heres one from 76

Good posts, guys. DJ Dan, that's my favorite track out of all the Fantastic Four tunes.

Did this Edwin Starr get any club play? I think the instrumental mix was only on the LP, not on the flip side of the 45. I wouldn't be surprised if there were DJs cutting back and forth between the 45 vocal mix (which was also on the LP) and the LP's instrumental mix.
