Best From Artist 44 - Grace Jones

In keeping with last week's comment about letting the women go some run, I'm gonna follow through this week. Besides, it's taken me too long to get to my home girl.
For some reason, my pick rarely comes to mind when I start doing things like my top ten disco but it should be. Of course I'm talking about "Pull Up To The Bumper." In fact to follow up on another thread, this song has a great intro.
My other favorite is "My Jamaican Guy."

I just love that LP cover to "Nightclubbing"

Pull Up To The Bumper, is one of my top favorites of all time... I just recently ran across a extended version with extra horn honks. Althought it's mostly instrumental, still a cool track made by someone.

Nipple To The Bottle also gets some recognition.

I'd say the little known "The Fashion Show" from Slave to The Rhythm.

"Libertango" has a dark, brooding intensity to it, one can just see Grace, naked under leather, slinking thru the rainsoaked side streets of Paris towards a dangerous psychosexual rendezvous with that stranger with piercing eyes. It's Grace, however, who will be in control there, that much is certain. "Walking In The Rain" is equally dramatic. "La Vie En Rose" has that special Pierre&Gilles technicolor glamour to it, with sequins and absinthe. I'll choose "La Vie En Rose".

I always liked 'La vie la rose" ever since it was first released, but my favotite is "Sorry" early classic Disco sound, I also like the song featured in the movie "Frantic" I think is called "I've seen this face before".

"La Vie En Rose" for it's sleaze factor.
"Pull Up To The Bumper" because it's hot.
"Am I Ever Gonna Fall In Love In New York City" because I did. :)

efunk: The instrumental version of "Pull Up... " is titled "Peanut Butter" by Compass Point All Stars.

No one likes "I Need A Man"???? Quelle Surprise!!!

Actually, I wasn't a BIG fan back then...but, listening to it today, it defines the era. And Mr. Moulton was a big influence (Producer...not just remixer/mixer).

Grace came into her own when she started recording for Island. I love the "Warm Leatherette" LP and from that I'd choose "Bullshit".

My favorite is for sure, most certainly, by all means, down to the wire, bumpin' true, way too cool...."Pull up to the bumper". Also I like her version of the Johnny Cash song - "Ring of fire".

Talk about deja vu! Paul I played "La Vie En Rose" about six times + today and to my amazement, Grace Jones was listed tonight as artist #44. I haven't listened to her songs in a long time so on my lunch hour, I hit replay until it was time to go back. "Pull Up To The Bumper" comes second but "LVER" is soooo damn beautiful as well as sleazy. "LVER" is an old french song - I believe that Josephine Baker sung the original one.

I don't remember "LVER." I'll have to see if I can give it a listen.

    Hustlebaby,

It was French chanteuse Edith Piaf who originally had a hit with "La Vie En Rose" in the early 1950's. :D

Besides 'Pull up to the bumper' and 'My Jamaican Guy' previously mentioned, I am surprised no one said 'Nipple to the bottle', another Grace Jones fave of mine.

    Easy,

Mixmachine: the song "I've seen his face before" from the "Frantic" movie is actually "Libertango", an Astor Piazzolla (Argentina bandoneon player and composer) classic with new lyrics. Jussi voted it and I will too.
But actually it's hard to pick just one... So let me add "Victor should have been a jazz musician", "Demolition man" (Grace's cover of the Police track) and of course her amazing version of "La vie en rose".
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

Can anyone roughly translate the lyrics of "Pars" (from Warm Leatherette) into English?

    Grace Jones favorites

For the sheer elegance of it i'd say Grace's version of "La vie en rose" is my all time fav up to this date, closely followed by
"Pull up" and the full "Slave" album.(play that last one now more than when it was new btw)

When in an easy mood, try "Victor should have been " or "I've done it again" :)

    favorite Grace Jones hit

"One Your Knees"...would be my favorite. It has that unmistakable "1979 sound", that extravagant orchestral sound. I love the way it begins with the sound of someone hitting a drumstick against a can, then erupts into this sensational rif.

Suprised no one mentioned "On Your Knees"...a personal fave as it has that 'tighter' disco sound. The "La Vie En Rose", "Private Life" and "Pull Up The Bumper". "Warm Leatherette" also is great and I was suprised to see it as a played fave of Larry L's in 1980. Hmmm.

Grace Jones was a staple figure at The Garage. Could be seen many times up in the booth with Larry. Plus, if I remember, Larry would wear leather every once in a while. Not the entire 'leather drag' deal, but pants, if memory serves. "Warm Leatherette" had that certain 'attitude' gay boys could get into and with Grace in the booth, I'm sure it worked well.

"Warm Leatherette"...is a personal fave of mine. I think Grace did really bloom between 1980-1985 into something more than a mere model cum dsco singer cum performance aritist (NOT to say I don't love her 1976-79 output). WHAT I would really love to see is Island release a collection of her disco cuts from the era as we have yet to get either Fame/Muse on CD. Some bonus 12" mixes would be wonderful. Sigh! Is there not someone I can harrass day i day out until I get more Grace???
