Re: 1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Hey Marky, Blanche, Remicks, etc....I read comments that the UK Disco Charts seemed heavy on POP...I also noticed that the Record Mirror UK SOUL charts seem 'MORE DISCO' than the actual Disco charts..again the black artists dominate....I will send Marky some of the UK Soul Top 10 for comparison.

Part of the reason for the Pop/Slowies in the charts is that many Mobile and MOR jocks sent in their charts and so these were a big part of getting people on the floor. Also, most UK disco's did cater more for the straight crowd, and the Slowies were an integral part of the 'pairing up process'...

BTW- the Record Mirror Disco chart was used by Music Week in UK- which was considered the Commercial chart Bible - but the more Funky charts were probabaly in the Black music specialist magazine Blues and Soul...I will get some of those charts over to Marky, (and try and dissect them myself to give a flavour of "what was what")
So we will be able to compare Record Mirror Disco and Soul charts, and also Blues and Soul.:icon_lol:

As an aside, the UK really didn't follow the USA Disco scene too closely (Until after SNF of course)..the UK had a love of black music from early days, and stuck with the black music from before, during and after Disco.........
IF ANYONE IN UK HAS OTHER THOUGHTS PLEASE POST....

You're spot on there d-d! I've said it before on this forum, I love how the North Americans embraced euro-disco in their clubs, but UK djs (with the exception of Scotland :icon_confused:) generally hated it. Even the American stuff that aped eurodisco such as St Tropez & Starcruiser was often treated with disdain by UK djs & music press. This often annoyed me when I was growing up as i loved funky/soulful stuff AND euro/hi-nrg stuff too.
    ...ya gotta beat the street......

Re: 1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

    Hey San,
Thanks for backing me up....to continue....I KNOW we need labels for Genres, But they MUST be broad enough to encompass ALL the musical 'styles' within that genre.. and there's the rub !!!

I am going off on a slight tangent from the initial observation by Marky,, but....
Here is a quote from firstly, Norman Harris, and then Van Mc Coy from the Billboard Disco Forum in Jan 1976 - ....
" ..a good song is needed before a disco hit can be produced...and added as an afterthought that his music was influenced by Jazz...

"...Mc Coy said disco music is a happy sound ....he contends that some people are paranoid about disco music, feeling that it may be killing black music and ballads"...

In another session at the same forum Mc Coy said ..."Nothing will surprise me. We might even see Gospel music in the disco soon." He also offered that .."any kind of music can happen in disco's, if it's danceable."
    :icon_lol:CELESTIAL CHOIR ANYONE ?:icon_lol:
Oh and BTW, Mc Coy was presented with the 1975 Disco Record of the Year Award at this event !!

Notice how "Tattoo Man" is debuting in the top 40 but is #2 in
San Francisco-I bet they were playing it as an import, right Marky?

Yep, at this point in time...

Denise McCann's "Tattoo Man" is charting at #40 as a Polydor 12-inch import.
Cerrone's "Love In C Minor" at #12 is charting as a Malligator import LP.

Thanks rhessel. Glad you enjoy it. Hard work but strangely I like it! But I'm having a problem with the "Edit" function since yesterday--made the last post very difficult to type. But I made it through by the end of the evening. :icon_confused:

The EDIT function seems to be not working properly--anyone else have a problem with the edit layout disappearing and just a series of squares which represent the 'Bold"/ "Italics" etc. functions.... anyone???....Bueller?........anyone???? :icon_evil::icon_exclaim:

Re: 1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Hey, marky, thanks SO VERY much for compiling the first February chart of 1977. Funny how the 2 "C Minors" are back-to-back at positions #12 and #13. LET THE BATTLE BEGIN !!!

Also was tickled to see the HIGH debut of Ritchie Family's "Life Is Music". It's one of my favorite tunes by them, though its "future" (as we'll soon see) chart performance is a bit understated, compared to 1975's "Brazil", '76's "Best Disco In Town" and the forthcoming late summer '77 "African Queens" medley and "Quiet Village". I'll always prefer the '75 to '77 lineup of Cassandra, Cheryl and Gwendolyn (and their fabulous gowns & headdresses on the LPs).:icon_lol:

Re: 1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

    Part #3: February 05, 1977

    By The Numbers......

THE DISCO COMPILATION CONSENSUS TOP 40--PURELY BY POINTS:

Using the chart data from all 16 charts, including Montreal. Based solely on point totals of individual titles; in cases of point ties, the title on more charts gets precedence--if # of charts is the same, it's in alphabetical order.

Legend: (B) = bundled with other titles by Billboard; (B/U) = "Bubbling Under the Top 40"
    * = Debut/ (R) = Return
    Perfect score = 240 maximum points (15 points for a #1 x 16 charts)

OK, now let's check to see where this week's charted items rank in the
    DISC-O-LA FORTUNE 500 ......

[first posted in the 3/26/76 column]

The rarefied air of the important CLASSIC records on the chart this week led me to take a look at their positions on the Disco-o-la Fortune 500 Discotheque Songs of the 70s list compiled by Ed Rothschild (with assistance from Johnny Tripp and Chipper McKearnin), that appears in its entirety in the back of Mel Cheren's book, Keep On Dancin': My Life and the Paradise Garage (2000); (Supposedly, this list came to fruition sometime in the Eighties; I don't know the specifics. The list goes back as early as the late Sixties for a few titles and then culls some from the early Seventies and stops at the end of
1979--no records from the Eighties are included--a few charted in 1980--but were actually released in late 1979)

[My thanks to Toby for supplying this material]

    DISCO MIX
    By Tom Moulton

    February 05, 1977

[NEW YORK]—Motown Records, currently enjoying a hot streak with disco products, has released three strong albums by the Originals, G.C. Cameron, and Jerry Butler.

The Originals album, titled “Down To Love Town,” is on the group’s Soul label. There are four strong cuts on this album, plus a disco version of “Down To Love Town,” which features an entirely different mix from that found in the version released on the group’s “Communiqué” album.

Six Million Dollar Man” is the strongest cut and will probably be the next single release. “Hurry Up And Wait” and “You Are A Blessing To Me” are both mellower vocally than “Six Million Dollar Man” but rhythmically are in the same uptempo style. “Been Decided” is slower and has some of the qualities of “Love Hangover.” All the cuts mentioned are over five minutes long, and it looks as though the group will continue to heavily pursue its new direction of doing more disco-oriented material, while foregoing the ballads for which they have become so well known.

G.C. Cameron’s LP, titled “You’re What’s Missing In My Life,” has four good cuts. “This Will Make You Dance” is among them. Here is a strong uptempo song with upfront percussion instruments and a nice melodic hook done in the Norman Harris style. There is also a good break, and the momentum starts at the beginning and builds right to the end.

In “You Need A Strong Dose Of Love,” there are a lot of qualities of the earlier Motown sound, and the end result is still very effective. More than a touch of the Marvin Gaye style is reflected in Let’s Run Away Together” and “You’re What’s Missing In My Life,” the title song from the album.

Jerry Butler’s new LP, “Suite For The Single Girl,” is one of the best things this artist has done since his Gamble & Huff days. There are three good disco-oriented songs on the album. Among them is “Chalk It Up,” which is the strongest and features a rhythm pattern that goes back and forth from one tempo to another, creating a funky experience, and sounding at times like it could have been cut for the Temptations.

I've always loved "This Will Make You Dance"-it's one of those songs you don't hear alot about
though.I'm curious to see where it charts-was it San Francisco?

Thommy, I can't believe you found that at YouTube--I've been searching for it for months and never had any luck I don't think I've ever heard this record .... Maybe it was just added?

[UPDATE #1: it was added 3 weeks ago.]

    [UPDATE #2:] it first charts next week (2/12/77) in Baltimore+Dc (#9), LA (#15) & NYC (#14)

Yes, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, but I resent that remark! That was supposed to be praise?

The new smilies SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are so faint, indistinct, dim-- they don't register. I can't sufficiently express my outrage.

Afterthought: I better add that I am kidding, lest anyone get the wrong idea.

I agree! The new 'tongue' one looks more like it's vomiting! & the 'eek' one looks like the face of a blow-up doll. (not that I'm familiar with blow-up dolls, ahem... -ah, at least the 'redface' is unchanged, well it was when I clicked on it but now I see that it's a new faint one - grrr!)
