1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

    OK, let's start 1977.

The last chart of 1976 was on 12/25, Christmas Day. Two weeks transpired between Christmas 1976 and the next published chart on January 8, 1977. This must have been the start of the year-end double issue (on newsstands for 2 weeks) that continues until today. Note that it was not the case at the end of 1974 or 1975. Charts appeared for every week in that time period.

So--when we last checked in on 12/25/76, Thelma Houston was #1 for the first week with "Don't Leave Me This Way," after 5 weeks of charting. Now, I have to add 2 weeks to those totals---making "Don't Leave Me This Way" #1 for 3 weeks after charting for 7 weeks. All records that are still charting as we move into 1977 have been given charting credit for that missing week and assigned points for that non-published week (repeated the 12/25/76 points) added into their cumulative point totals. Understand?

So --on with the charts! [slowly--I'm rather rusty at this point!]

Re: 1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

WOW!-Marky,the charts look so pretty and colorful-it's especially nice to
see you back doing my favorite thread. And I've never heard the Black Jack track-those Phoenix DJ's really were adventurous, weren't they?
I need to pull out my Dynamic Superiors Lp as I always get the "stay
aways" mixed up,and my beloved Melba Moore track only charts in NYC-
which is why, I believe gives her a short chart life.I look forward to
    finding out Marky,and welcome back!

Thanks, Marky, for already brightening my Monday (seeing your first chart of 1977) !!!

I greatly appreciate your past, present & future efforts on tracking disco's legendary hits, and am excited to see the debut of "Spring Rain" (my 2nd fave disco instrumental of all time --- behind "Trammps Disco Theme").

Re: 1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

Thanks to all the guys - Thommy, Stephen, Kris, rhessel, tmob & drlove-- who dropped by to say "welcome back!" Much appreciated.

I will be posting additional information soon. I mentioned in another thread that I have a computer crisis at home....so I will have to do this on my work computer until that crisis is resolved. It will proceed sloooowly but surely. I hope.

Question: Is the Tender Aggression "Black Jack" that debuts this week related to the Baciotti "Black Jack?" Joel Whitburn's book says the Tender Aggression record is an instrumental [designated by [I] ]....so I'm wondering if the Baciotti just added lyrics to the instrumental? Or are they not releated? Found the Tender Aggression listed on Discogs--but with no songwriting credit...it's not on YouTube either. Anyone know? :icon_confused:

Oh, and do you like the chart colored or is it overkill? :icon_lol:

    Hey, marky,

    as to your requested info:

I personally don't have the info you need re: BlackJack (sorry!)

    -and-

I thoroughly enjoy your use of color here.
(It would be Overkill only if we get a debut by Men At Work).

Yes it's nice to see you back doing what you do best Blanche - & all from that wheelchair too...amazing!:icon_twisted: Your Black Jack query is an interesting one as I'm sure I recall someone saying that the Baciotti version (if indeed it is the same tune) was a big pop hit in Germany & Dieter is a German name (& oddly enough my copy of the album is German!:icon_confused:) so you could be onto something there sis. (or am I just clutching at straws?)

Re: 1977 Billboard Disco Compilation Consensus Charts!!!

There's no connection to the Baciotti song other than the title. This track and the instrumental album it comes from is pleasant, but in my opinion forgettable, and probably wouldn't chart during a busier time of year. It sounds like "library music," the kind of stuff TV producers would stick in the background of a disco or party scene. I wouldn't be surprised if it had been originally recorded for that purpose.

Nope... I found an mp3 of the Tender Aggression song, and Barry's description is on-the-nose.
Although, I like that soundtrack style of Disco. And it's really quite a good example of it.
