Those Instrumental Mixes Of Vocal Tracks

You'd think that the music industry would just stick to one standard for naming instrumental mixes of vocal tracks on their singles or LPs. What various alternate indicators have you come across for the instrumental mix?

I've seen the song name with instrumental noted in brackets or underneath. Sometimes they've been referred to as Part 2, like with Rick Dees 'Disco Duck'. Renaming the song and even given different writing credit also has occurred, like Anthony White's I Can't Turn You Loose / Block Party. Sylvia Robinson would put something like 'You Sing' in front of the song title. Barry White liked to shorten or slightly alter the title of the song, like Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe (vocal)/Just Not Enough (instrumental). The instrumental mix of Jimmy Ruffin's 'Tell Me What You Want' was called 'Jimmy's Theme'.

Any other unusual renamings of the instrumental mixes for vocal tracks?

The Italian word for "instrumental" is senza voce and it means "without voice"; some PWL productions use that name as a parallel of the other Italian word, a cappella, like Lonnie Gordon's "Happenin' All Over Again" or Princess' "After The Love Has Gone".

What about the Trammps "Zing Went the Strings of My Heart" with
the instrumental "Penguin at the Big Apple"? Or Northern End's "Happy Days" with "Tee's Happy" (after remixer Tee Scott)?

That's the track I was thinking of when I wrote that. The irony of that song's title is that there isn't really much singing in it at all. :)

    Sorry, I can't tell you, it's a secret!!

Just kidding, the track is found on the UK-only LP Love Is All We Need. It doesn't have any vocals on it, not even the backing vocals, so it's a pure instrumental.

This philly track is also on that 1975 LP. It features most of MFSB, except the drummer isn't Earl Young, Karl Chambers, Charles Collins, or any of the other philly regulars. I can't remember the first name, just that the last name was DiStefano. He plays it like the LUO/LA session drummer Ed Greene.

The brilliant 'Hupendi Muziki Wangu' instrumental track by K.I.D. was actually the b-side & the vocal a-side version 'You Dont Like My Music' was very inferior. Also from the early 80s, Wuf Ticket's 'The Key' on Prelude was better on the instrumental b-side than the vocal a-side IMO.

Re: Those Instrumental Mixes Of Vocal Tracks

"Burning Love Breakdown", the b-side of the US 12" of Peter Brown's "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me?", is an extended mix of, just the a-side's break. In the NY area, it was as big as the a-side.

The Euro 12" copies read: "Burning Love Breakdown" on the b-side, but are, actually the entire song's instrumental version.

Also, "The Anvil Band", on Free Spirit Records (a Salsoul subsudiary), recorded an instrumental version of Charo's "Dance A Little Bit Closer", for their LP.

Just like the "Notorious Miami" LP, has an instrumental version of Betty Wright's "If You Love Me Like You Say You Love Me", and both were Produced by Willie Clarke.

And Cerrone's "Vice Squad Soundtrack" LP's are comprised, mostly of remixed instrumental versions of songs from his 1st three LP's and the Revelation LP, "Don't Give A Damn".

We should also note GET ON UP as an early Richie Rome arrangement ..... (Marvin Gaye inspired IMO).
