This CD has some great tunes on it:

    "Stars" by Sylvester

    "Stars, Everybody is a star

    You are a star

    And It Only Happens Once..."

"I Got The Feeling" by Two Tons 'O Fun

"I Can Give You All My Love,

And I Can Give You My Heart

I Can Give You All You Need

I'm Gonna Really Do My Part"

    "Lady America" by Voyage

    "Shoo-shoo-shoo be-doo-dow

    Shoo-shoo-shoo be-dow..."

"Let's All Chant" by Michael Zager Band

    "A-ha Hey, Hey

    Let's All Chant

    Your body, my body

    Every body, work your body..."

Would this song on that CD classify as "morning music":

"Standing Right Here" by Melba Moore??

When I hear that song, I can picture swaying to it at around 7:30 p.m.

"Feed The Flame" by Lorraine Johnson

    "And I Can't Believe

    The Way That I Feel

    When You Touch Me

    I Can't be Still

    When You Love Me

    All My Fantasies Are Real

It's True That I Need You,

    I Need You..."

Melba Moore's "Standing Right Here" Is CLASSIC MORNING MUSIC. This typifies the 100-118 bpm pretty soul music that was played in the early morning (5-8:00 am). Most of Melba's tunes qualify, along with the recordings of many other R&B divas we adore on this board: Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman, Jean Carn, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Patti Austin, Randy Crawford, Linda Clifford, Gladys Knight, and all the rest.

Sorry, but I feel the need to REPEAT this at least ONCE A MONTH!!!

Mark - And rightly so! Those ladies deserve not to sink to obscurity and, damn it, if we have our say, they won't.

Hey Patti Austin fans, another new CD in mid May, "To Ella With Love"!

Hell yes! And everything Marky said, too. We were all 'feeling that way' about 7:30 a.m. (I'm assuming that's what you meant, not p.m.)

That wasn't a typo when I said "p.m." As a morning music classic is one thing, but I also liken this song to a "warm-up" of sorts for the nighttime. Before the place gets packed, I picture this song being played at that time, 7-7:30 p.m.

My mistake, but interesting. I don't know about now but I've never been to a club/bar where the dj was 'warming up' the crowd at that time in the evening. I would consider the song as being 'wasted' if I played it that early as a filler piece. I say that because I was a stickler for not repeating music in the same evening.

May I ask what places you went or go to at that time? Just seems so early to get started. Must be my NY head. Also, when I say the time is early I'm not including the classic "Tea" sessions which began late afternoon.

I also used to play “morning music” early in the night too, you see, many clubs closed early around 2AM or 3 AM and in straight clubs is either early or never for this music sets, in my experience, with few exceptions, the energy level in straight clubs needs to be very high for as long as possible, if you play any low tempo music before the very end of the night you risk loosing the floor and the crowds, even in many 5.00 am clubs I couldn’t play “morning music” either, I needed to pound that floor until the last 5 min when I threw everybody out by playing something way off like “New York New York” or “Good night my Love “, there is a big difference between Gay and Straight clubs programming, and remember, most clubs around the country don’t open past 5.00 am at best, in the end, you need to play what ever works for you and your club.

    Mixmachine,

Thank you for taking me out of my gay NY haze. I always forget that not everyone experienced the 24/7 party-life of NYC and that yes, straight people were out there, too. Now I understand where Robbie was coming from and you're both right... If I worked a club that closed at 2 a.m. (my friends were just getting started at this hour) I'd probably start playing before 9 or 10 p.m.
