    Spending your hard-earned cash

I know from the What I've been Listening To section what you are all tuned into. But what exactly do you spend your hard earned money on?

What was the last record (be it CD, MD, tape or even vinyl!) that you actually bought?

As for me, I was at a car boot sale (second hand sale) a couple of weeks ago and I picked up these three 12-inch singles for 50p (75 cents) each

Richard Evans - Do Re Mi For Soul (US promo 1979)
Johnny Guitar Watson - A Real Mother For Ya (UK 1977)
Johnny Guitar Watson - The Real Deal (UK 1977)

... and they all play absolutely fine!!

One thing that really frustrates me at these sales. All the best 70T's soul/disco is to be found in boxes of old totally knackered (worn out) musicassettes that are totally unplayable!! :( :(

So - what have you guys been buying recently?

    :)

I'll have three attempts. The last two CDs I bought were not disco. The third most recent one was.

Most recent CD: "A Long Day's Night" - Blue Oyster Cult (live at the Chicago Navy Pier, Summer Solstice 2002)

Second most recent: "Now That's What I Call Music 53" (I never listen to the radio, so I buy the "Now" albums to keep somewhat up to date with the latest chart music).

Third most recent: "Mantronix: That's My Beat" (A collection of Hip Hop, Electro and Disco songs that influenced Kurtis Mantronik, including the magnificent "Get On Up And Do It Again" by Suzy Q)

The last CD I bought were Classic Jazz Funk volumes 2 & 3 on MVP records. There's some pretty good tracks on them, although the funk tends to sound a little dated on some.
However, there's one track that I've absolutely fallen in love with and just wish I could have played in a club on a really loud system by Eddie Harris called Listen Here. An incredibly funky, incredibly soul lifting, melodic, uptempo laid back latin Jazzy Funk groove that just makes me wanna wiggle my ass. It was made in 1967 but sounds so much more modern than that. Wow!!!!!
Other than that, there's tracks like:
Benny Golson - New Killer Joe
Donald Byrd - Dominoes & Black Byrd
Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves The Sunshine & We Live In Brooklyn Baby
    Jimmy McGriff - The Worm
Esther phillips - Home Is Where The Hatred Is
to name a few and lotsa other good quality tracks.

It's been a long time since I bought a new CD, I confess... I began buying vinyl thanks to this site, but still have not the full equipment to listen to them. Right now it's used CDs, non-listenable vinyl and, yes, some MP3 CDs that span a full artist discography (please don't start another discussion with this). I don't have Kazaa, so I'm basically re-buying old faves' catalogues. Last ones were Steely Dan, Billy Joel, a Marvin Gaye box and some tributes to him, and also Rhino's New Wave 15 CD set (which I will review here sometime).
On the "used CD" format I remember buying a very good Wilson Pickett compilation, "Vex" by Steel Pulse, "Bloodflowers" by The Cure, Jacko's "Off the wall" and some jazz records.
In vinyl, last week I traspassed some barrier and bought a Van McCoy record. :o It was "Rhythms of the world".
But the first source of material right now are my friend's records for CD copy. Guilty as charged.
It don't mean a thing (if ain't got that swing)

    Radiohead: OK Computer
Pink Floyd: The Dark Side Of The Moon (new vinyl reissue... love the original cover as well as all the posters and other goodies)

Honestly the last few things I've bought have been at www.gemm.com

Side Effect - Keep That Same Old Feeling (CD Single)

it's a set of new mixes which makes the record sound like a late 80's recording... you can tell they are still around trying to make an extra buck... I wish I can say that I dig it.. but don't care for it as I would like.

Change - 2 Classic Albums (CD)

The CD listings from both studio LP's "Miracles" LP 1981
    "Change Of Heart" LP 1984

    Junie - The Westbound Years

(Funkydude has been posting how much he likes "Granny's Funky Rolls Royce" a lot lately... that I just had to hear it.)
I really really dig, "Tight Rope" :D :D , I wonder what would have happened if Junie stayed with Ohio Players and he and Sugarfoot could of split time on lead vocal. I guess it was meant to be... I still can't get enough of "Ecstasy" and "Pleasure".

Art Laboe's - Dedicated To You vol. 10 (CD)
contains a combination of slow jams from 60s - 90s

    Patti Drew - Tell Him
Lost Generation - Sly, Slick & The Wicked
Rosie and the Originals - Angel Baby (Spanglish)
    H-Town - Knockin' Da Boots
Lighter Shade of Brown - On A Sunday Afternoon
    Jonny Z - Latin Swing

just to name a few cuts from it.

Steely Dan - Aja (used CD)

I've been wanting to play "Black Cow" at some of the weddings that I perform at when it's cocktail hour. So, I still buy stuff just for one song... lol

    also

Faith, Hope & Charity - Too Each His Own (12" blue vinyl)

I didn't have it sent to my home address, so I haven't been
able to put it on the turntable as of yet.

My latest purchases are CDs. Vinyl just don't exist here in Brazil. I don't care for it either.

    1 - PET SHOP BOYS - DISCO 3
2 - THOMAS DOLBY - FORTY (Live album celebrating his 40th birthday)
3 - SWING OUT SISTER - SOMEWHERE DEEP IN THE NIGHT (european release)

I went to Amoeba Records last Sunday to see if I could find vinyl copies of "Live It Up" by Time Bandits or "Breaking And Entering" by Dee Dee Sharp Gamble...and ended up buying 7 CDs (even though I promised myself I wouldn't) DUH

    Erasure: "Other People's Songs"
(covers galore including "When Will I See You Again" and Peter Gabiriel's "Solsbury Hill"--the only cut I'd previously heard)

    Jody Watley: "Midnight Lounge"
(Keefe said this is a good one....so I picked it up)

    Robbie Williams: "Escapolgy"
(I've like Robbie's stuff in the past and this has received some good reviews here in the USA; ya gotta support good old pop/rock in this day of gangsta/thug rap crap)

Alison Krauss & Union Station: "Live"
(Blue grass from this angelic singer--one of my faves. Start with her compilation "Now That I've Found You" featuring her gorgeous cover of the old Foundations song. Sublime.)

    Kasey Chambers: "The Captain"
(Australian country/folk rock type singer; I liked her second release titled "Barricades And Brickwalls" especially a song titled "Not Pretty Enough", so I bought her first release.)

    Audra McDonald: "Happy Songs"
    (Broadway Diva sings standards)

    Kristen Chenoweth:"Let Yourself Go"
(Another Broadway Diva sings standards type affair)

I haven't listened to any of them yet.

All of my most recent album purchases have been metal albums, the last one being Opeth's "Damnation" (which came out last Tuesday). The other albums I bought recently:

    "Deliverance" - Opeth
    "Nothing" - Meshuggah
"The Art Of Balance" - Shadows Fall
    "Proclaiming Vengeance" - Mental Horror
    "Blackwater Park" - Opeth

Here in Italy is almost impossible to find disco music in second hand stores, so all my purchases are through web (Gemm, e-bay, on line stores).
At the moment i'm trying to buy rare records on vinyl, so i'm spending much more than your 50c/1$ :-? !!
My last three purchases were all on E-Bay:

    1)Marta Acuna - Dance Dance Dance $77 :o
2)Decimo - Theme From Shaft $35 (greeeeat track!!)
    3)King David - Hitch Hike $23
