of disco songs? I recently listened to remakes of "Don't Leave Me This Way" and "Keep On Jumpin'" and immediately wondered: why bother? If you like any, which ones are they?

Yes I agree that most remakes of disco tracks are pointless as the originals were usually so perfect.Exceptions: I have to say I really like Pat & Mick's version of Michael Zager's 'Lets All Chant'. Hazell Dean's version of Yvonne Elliman's 'Love Pains' I also like. (SAW/PWL really understand disco so their remakes treat the songs with respect IMO). Diana Ross's version of 'I Will Survive' is rather good too. Darryl Pandy's version of Southshore Commission's 'Free Man' I like alot too. Oh & Class Action's & Todd Terry's versions of Phreek's 'Weekend' are very good too.:icon_razz: Can't think of any others that are worth bothering with at the moment.:icon_confused:
...ya gotta beat the street......
Pat and Micks cover version of the Odyssey classic "Use It Up, Wear It Out" is in some ways better than the original.
I agree Sandra, SAW really understand disco they kept the happy vibe of it in their productions.
TDK, I also like the Pat & Mick version of "Use It Up, Wear It Out" ...like the original also..
What about Incognito's cover of "Always There"???? Love it.Now which version was it? I think it's the David Morales remix on the "Remixed" cd that was my fave version. I think. But if I had to choose one version, I'd pick Side Effect's from 1976!

"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
I love the Three Degrees, but actually prefer Sheena Easton's remake of Givin' Up, Givin' In. They pump every ounce of energy out of it. The fetish-party-in-hell video is a bit over the top. But I think Sheena has a sense of humor about it.
"Because there's music in the air."
There are two remakes of classic disco songs of the 70's done in the 90's i liked better than the original:
The Braxtons/The Boss (originally by Diana Ross)
Nuyorican Soul/Runaway (originally a Salsoul-Hit)
Cory, I don't know which cover of "Keep On Jumpin'" you are referring to but...these are fine for me:

I just heard that version for the first time yesterday, I thought it was "okay" but it seemed so electronic and bare compared to the lush original. And by the way, I guess I should have put more thought into this question, because if you're not familiar with the original version of a disco song, comparing it to the remake seems to be a moot point, and I've never heard several of the disco originals that people are quoting as examples here, but thanks for the response...maybe I'll seek them out now. I'm having a really hard time trying to imagine a cover of Diana Ross' effusive "The Boss" that I'd like as much as her version. Ashford and Simpson's version (on their live album "Performance") makes me wretch, especially when Ashford sings. Ditto Pseudo Echo's cover of "Funkytown"...yuck.
I agree that very few remakes equal the originals, but a couple of good remakes/samplers for consideration are:
Phats and Small - Turn Around (Toney Lee - Reach Up)

YouTube - Reach Up - Toney Lee (12" Vinyl) 1982
Black Box - Ride On Time (Loleatta Holloway - Love Sensation)

Black Box also did a reasonable cover of Earth Wind and Fire's - Fantasy

Although I liked the original 'Moody' by the South Bronx girl group ESG, I rather like the remake done by Sessomatto. It's more upbeat and clubbish to me IMO.
no, dont like them remakes AT ALL.
okay, maybe the men in black tune from will smith
(that one wasn't too bad, I guess:icon_mrgreen: )
YouTube - Will Smith - Men In Black[Official Music Video]
original (still way better imo):
YouTube - Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots
the sample from donna summers: I love to love you in beyonce's naughty girl, is also okay, I guess :icon_mrgreen::
YouTube - Beyoncé - Naughty Girl
Original (still way better imo):
YouTube - Donna Summer - Love To Love You Baby(1975)
I agree Cory, Incognito's version of 'Always There' is definately one of the best ever cover versions.
If you don't mind, could you tell an old technophobe how to post the youtube video, like you have done. You will see in my earlier posts that I can cut & paste the youtube url, to give a link, but your way of doing it looks much more professional. Thanks.

Re: do you really like ANY disco remakes?
Generally speaking - -NO
But, there is one and may I say, the only one, that I like.
"Was That All It Was" Jean Carne
Redone by Kym Mazelle with production and mixing by David Morales
(DefMix) 1989

T-Empo's Saturday Night Sunday Morning (Thelma Houston) is rather good especially this mix

Sixty minutes is nothing special (but it\'s all the world to me)
Can't say I've heard all that much post-DISCO disco, but one later remake of a true disco song that I prefer is Pet Shop Boys' version of "Go West". In true PSB style, their version is smoother, more polished, and slightly more locomotive than the original Village People version.
I also have to include that the song's sunny, hopeful lyrics take on a bittersweet quality when sung in Neil Tennant's somewhat plaintive style post-'80s (read AIDS), as compared to the genuine optimism of the VP version.

Dont Faint anyone who knows me..Myself being the Diana Ross Fanatic that I am.. But I must say that I really Like Kristine W's cover of The Boss.. It will NEVER be as good as DIANA's but it's pretty Fierce~!
