I'm glad somebody finally mentions the great Johnny Guitar Watson. "I need It" is from his classic "Ain't That A Bitch" album (DJM, 1976). I've never known anybody who's been able to mix disco and blues like this guy.

Oh yeah, that "Far Beyond" by locksmith is a favorite of mine as well. any 12" info would be greatly apreciated.

Nice selection all together, RU :P

    RU,
Yes, I have the album. Bought it in London back in '86.
"I Need It" is probably the most disco influenced cut on the album but every track is outstanding.
You must of course know the classic title track but also "I Want To Ta-Ta You Baby" and "Superman Lover" are no less than exceptional pieces of art. (The latter was sampled by Redman in 1992 and became "Soopaman Luvah" )

Most of the 70's Johnny Guitar Watson cataloque was re-issued on CD by Sequel in 1994-96. I managed to get a hold of the "A Real Mother For Ya", "Funk Beyond The Call of Duty" and "Love Jones" albums. They're worth tracking down too.

I Need It was a massively popular track with the soul crowd I used to hang out with... I have it on a worn out 7-inch with a chip out of the edge missing - so I miss the first 2 seconds or so when I play it!!

He was really great - with his own particular blend of buesy guitar and funk - a style all of his own...

I am really happy as I have just picked up a couple of 12-inch singles from him last week including A Real Mother For Ya ....

I first heard of him when he duetted with Larry Williams on Two For The Price Of One - a soul classic from the 60Ts. I have that one of a UK "Best Of Okeh records" release.

BTW The whole of that Locksmith LP is particularly fine ... Love that Roy Ayers track, of course. Roy Ayers is my all-time favourite music hero!!

Jazz, I suppose you're talking about the "Unlock The Funk" album. Great stuff indeed. Did they ever make anything else??

Sorry RU, I have never heard of Willie Buck. Maybe other board members can help you out.

About the guitar watson albums: It's impossible to say which one you should start with. I bought "Ain't That A Bitch" and then waited 12 years before I got "A real Mother For Ya". but that was mostly because I couldn't find the vinyl in Denmark at all so I had to wait for the cd reissue.

they are both equally good albums. Just flip a coin and see what happens

RU: Talkin' of disco blues have you ever heard the 12" of Bobby Rush 'I Wanna Do The Do'? This was one hell of a funky groove from '78 or '79 that I played and played. About 110 BPM, Harmonica, Wailing organ, heavy, heavy funky rhythm. What a Blast!!!!
It was on Philadelphia International in the UK at least.

RU: I only ever had the 12" and a 7" copy. I believe he was relatively well known on the Blues scene though.
A bit more info about the record.
It was one of those discs that projected a really infectious good time vibe and was a great track to start off an uptempo session after some slowies.
Some lyrics (which are a little sketchy after 24 years, but as I can even partly remember them after this long shows something I guess).

    Hey! I wanna boogie,
    Yeah, I wanna boogie y'all

    I feel so good,
I wanna party 'til the break of day,
I feel so good, I feel so good,
I wanna tear this mutha out,

Do the do, do the do,
Get on down and do the do.

Very disjointed, but hey, I'm really crap at lyrics. Hope that gives you some kinda insight.
