Recently I got some old 70's Top Of The Pops episodes from one of the guys I do video trades with and watching the episodes there were quite a number of fantastic disco performers on the show during the 1970's. A few years back the old Top Of The Pops episodes from the 70's were repeated in UK and in Australia on a pay TV channel called "UKTV". Here's a list of disco performances I have that are from Top Of The Pops:
Fox - S-S-S-Single Bed 1976
Dan I - Monkey Chop 1979
Olympic Runners - Get It While You Can 1978
Jonathan Kim - One For You, One For Me 1978 (These guys had clown afros)
Three Degrees - Given Up Giving In 1978
Boney M - Rasputin 1978 (The guy wearing a huge grizzly beard)
John Miles - Slow Down 1977
Hot Chocolate - So You Win Again 1977
JALM Band - I Got To Sing 1977
Bay City Rollers - It's A Game 1977
Jacksons - Show You The Way To Go 1977
Billy Ocean - Stop Me 1976
Shanannigans - Dance The Night Away 1977
Tina Charles - Dr Love 1977
Hot Chocolate - Put Your Love In Me 1977
Boney M - Daddy Cool 1977
Hot Chocolate - You Sexy Thing 1975
Kool & The Gang - Celebration 1980
Real Thing - Can You Feel The Force 1979
Donna - Fairy Tale 1977
Tommy Huns - One Fine Morning 1977
Andy Gibb - I Just Want To Be Your Everything 1977
Delegations - It's Temptation 1976
5000 Volts - Dr Kiss Kiss 1976
Billy Ocean - Love On Delivery 1976
Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting 1974
Andy Kim - Rock Me Gently 1974
Gladys Knight & The Pips - Midnight Train To Georgia 1976 (They performed this song on one of the 1976 episodes)
Rose Royce - Love Don't Live Here Anymore 1978
Delfonics - La-la Means I Love You 1971
Some of these artist names may be incorrect as I had to hear the host of the show introducing the artist while the audience scream and write down the artist name and song title.
Some of the disco songs on Top Of The Pops the artists themselves didn't perform live and they play the song with the Top Of The Pops dancers known as "Legs & Co." dancing to the disco songs. And some of the disco songs they show the music video promos such as:
Silver Convention - Get Up & Boogie 1976 (the music video resembles one of those 1930's B&W cartoons)
Dynasty - I Don't Want To Be A Freak 1979
I'm also doing a video trade with someone in UK for some more Top Of The Pops episodes, so when I get those I'll see what disco acts are on them.
So if anyone is into collecting disco music videos and live performances, Top Of The Pops is a good show to get a hold of.
There is currently a program on BBC2 called TOTP 2 which shows old clips of Top of the Pops and some of the disco acts are very entertaining such as Liquid Gold and Biddu. I was always annoyed that Donna Summer never appeared even when I Feel Love was #1 for 4 weeks in 1977 because I was a huge fan (still am really).
I will always remember the time they showed the promo video for Sylvester's You Make me Feel (mighty real)- it blew me away and changed my life! (I was 13 at the time and very innocent).
...ya gotta beat the street......
