What is the Origin of the Disco Suite?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the origin of "disco suites" ? For example, "Forbidden Love Suite", "Macarthur Park Suite", "Move On Up Suite" and so on..I'm guessing its like a medley..? :icon_confused:

Yeah, I think Suite was a slightly pretentious way of saying Medley. :) I guess the difference would be that the title song would be at either end of the Medley, you know like a reprise. If you check out Lipstiques LP from '77, they both sides were basically suites, but they didn't call them that.

I was always under the impression that a Suite - featured songs that had a similar theme or told some kind of story.

Less cut & paste than a plain old medley.

    From the dictionary...

    Suite – noun

    1. - a number of things forming a series or set.

    5. - Music.
    a. an ordered series of instrumental dances, in the same or related keys, commonly preceded by a prelude.
    b. an ordered series of instrumental movements of any character.

I always thought of a "medley" as consisting of short fragments of several songs, whereas as "suite" had longer and complete songs which were part of a cohesive set.

True, that sounds about right. I guess that would make the A sides of Grace Jones' Fame and Muse LPs Suites, and not just medleys. :)

I never thought of it quite as a Suites before but on reading Stephen's post, the three songs that make up each side of Cerrone's Supernature are two Suites. Even the slow track "In The Smoke" contains musical elements from Supernature.

And Tony - Let's not forget that sometimes 2 tracks just go together so well that the combination of the 2 titles becomes some kind of statement.

Case in point : On Dead Or Alive's Sophisticated Boom Boom Lp - the first 2 songs on side B are You Make Me Wanna and Sit On It. :icon_lol::icon_twisted:
