DISCO DANCIN' 3 LP RECORD SET IN EXCELLENT CONDITION - eBay (item 310106747630 end time Sep-02-09 10:55:58 PDT)
To each his own.
Maybe it should be a sub-genre of disco.
I don't understand why this record and the Saturday Night Fielder LPs are mic'd or mixed to sound like they were recorded in an Opera Hall. It's such a turn off because you would never play that anywhere without getting laughed at. They should have studied Gamble & Huff's mixing of the strings and other instruments, since they practically used a full orchestra. Perhaps these late 70s LPs insisted on recording the performances in concert halls instead of a nice studio to save costs?
Disco Funk
funny you should say that since SATURDAY NIGHT FIEDLER WAS mixed at Sigma Sounds , Philadelphia ... and it was produced and arranged by John Davis ( I think this is one reason I hadn't until getting futher educated here at this site heard John Davis as "Philly" .....his sound is comparably too thin ... tinny)
Still I think even he was frustrated by what he had to work with here. The problem I think is as explained on the cover:
Recorded Live at Symphony Hall , Boston Machachushits
one take ! ..... live !

Even though the Field LP was mixed at Sigma (I don't have it handy so I can't see that information myself), it was recorded in an echo filled concert hall if I'm not mistaken. There would have been tons of spillage between all of the instruments. The drums almost sound like they only had one microphone held a few feet away from the kit. I can tell the rhythm section is the Monster Orchestra philly regulars, but if there's too much ambient echo on the raw recording, I don't think Sigma could have saved it.
I still don't understand why you don't think of Davis as philly? He used all the same guys as Gamble & Huff and Salsoul did. The mixing was similar, although I noticed by '75 or so he tried to distinguish his mixes from the other Philly productions by not using as much echo. It all sounded like they just left the amount of reverb on the instruments the exact same as when it hit the tape on recording. Does this sound thin and tinny?!! :)
or this?!!
Disco Funk
Well, like I said -( I work with someone who says that every third sentence) -
since getting myself higher disco educated..... I do think of John Davis as Philly!!
Kind of wispy , kind of muddied ... but still Philly! :icon_mrgreen::icon_biggrin:
I can't tell. My computer has no sound !!!! :icon_cry::icon_cry::icon_cry::icon_cry:Does this sound thin and tinny?!! :)

I'm not sure they were made to play in the clubs..and I never did.
But they were trading in on either their name (Fiedler) or titles(Saturday Night Fever).
I have used them, in part, and, for part of a pre-show mix as the audience is filling in. And this was for stuff like sporting competitions or talent shows, conventions.
Or as dinner music or background music (a bed) over raffles, awards or announcements and such. Especially, if real disco recordings are part of the evening.
I will also use instrumental versions of songs that are provided on the flip sides of 12 inches.
