    Best percussion solo ever?

I'm a percussionist myself and a sucker for a great percussion solo, especially timbales. I was wondering what people think is the best percussion solo in a disco/soul/funk/boogie song.

    My favorites include:

Tell Everybody (12" version 7:48) - Herbie Hancock: Sheila E(scovedo) on timbales
I Want You For Myself - George Duke: Sheila E(scovedo) on various percussion
The Glamorous Life (album version) - Sheila E: Sheila E on timbales

(Ok, ok I love me some Sheila E :icon_lol: )

Sheila E. IS the bomb -- she's always been awesome at percussion.

Is it a percussion solo that tickles my fancy in the middle of the extended 7+ minute mix of "Shine On Silver Moon" (Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.) ???

Not certain if that's what your question's aiming for . . . but whatever percussive measures the musicians on that record are taking during the breakdown (before building steam again) is . . ..sexy, sexy, sexy, in my opinion.

I offer this an an example of expert percussion:
    Shep Pettibone's brilliant remix of
Jeanette "Lady" Day's "Come Let Me Love You" (Prelude/1981)

and--some think-- even better as an instrumental:

    "Lost inside adorable illusion...."

Awakening me to the power of the percussion in my disco odyssey:

    DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO
    T-Connection

    CALYPSO BREAKDOWN
    Ralph McDonald

both took me into a frenzied musical altered state on the floor of STUDIO ONE :icon_cool:

Yep, cool indeed, love those cowbells! And this was of course sampled by the Beastie Boys for "Hey Ladies".

    and here's Mr. Gene Chandler

check in at 3:54, this is the typical percussion break that was used in variations on following 12 inch-Disco-Productions in the glorious years of 1979 to 1982.

Carlos Santana did a live album with Buddy Miles years and years ago, called just "Live". There's a percussion solo at the end of the opening track, "Marbles", that just COOKS. It almost sounds too fast for a human being to have played it.

    Re: Best percussion solo ever?

No actual percussion solos, but there are breakdown sections featuring lots of nice percussion and drums on these cuts

And the one with the break that I had heard on SCTV and had been looking for about 2 decades

And then there's this little oddity from 1970 that was resurrected during the 80s

The Beastie Boys liked it enough to have sampled it on Hey Ladies from 1989's Paul's Boutique LP.

One I have always loved is Buenos Aires by Festival after the piano intro and the percussion on Come Into My Heart by USA European Connection is great. The break in You Should Be Dancing by the Bee Gees was inspired for 1976.

Some great choices guys! This one has bursts of that fab cowbell sound from 'After Dark' & 'The Break' (& it's remixed by our own Glenn R.)

Whitesockedfunk already mentioned this DF; while we're a-sample-spottin', 'CLMLY' was also sampled for '100% Pure Love' by Crystal Waters in '94.
