Neer Knew Love Like This Before
Let's have the ladies get some run shall we. Who better to start with than Stephanie Mills. Easily, my favorite disco cut from her is "Put Your Body In It." Everytime that got slapped on the platter, I got my body over to some fine lady hoping a dance would serve as foreplay 8)
As for Stephanie's ballads, I loved her duets "Be A Lion" and "Feel The Fire." Simply awesome from a fine petite woman.
Find them and destroy them!
Neer Knew Love Like This Before
The Pounding Drums, The Flashing Lights...
My pick is "Never Knew Love Like This Before".
"Put Your Body in It" does nothing for me. I find it dull. My favorite Mills disco song is "What 'Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin'" with "Never Knew Love Like This Before" being very close behind. When I first heard "What 'Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin'" it was on a New York City R&B station that I was hearing through a cable radio hookup, sometime in (I believe) the early 1990s, and I was totally mesmerized by its rich bass and violins and the whole production. I tuned into that station many times after that during their old-school hours and fortunately enough I was able to hear it again and again, and each time I wanted the song to go on forever, even beyond the 8 minutes of the long version. That was certainly the song that rekindled my interest in disco at that time, since I had not been listening to disco for a number of years at that point (except for hearing "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang at a most unpleasant time). (The other song they played which I couldn't get enough of was "Secret Garden" by Quincy Jones.) The problem was that I didn't know anything about Stephanie Mills and I don't think they named the artists on the program, so it took until around 1996-1998 to find out who had done that song and that "Never Knew Love Like This Before" was also considered disco and by the same singer (back in the early '80s when I had first heard "Never Knew..." when I was 5 or 6 years old I don't think her name was mentioned either. Now I'm glad I recently got the chance to personally thank bassist Basil Fearrington for his great playing on these songs. Of interest is the fact that the compilation "Ultimate Disco" which was released by Madacy on April 15, 2003, which is otherwise pretty boring with the "usual" tracks (you know, "YMCA", "Last Dance", "Shake Your Groove Thing", etc.), does have "Never Knew..." as one of its tracks. "NK" is also one of the best arguments that disco was not dead at the end of 1980.
Honorable mention goes to "You Can Get Over" (1979) and "I Believe in Love Songs" (1981).
According to Alex Henderson of All Music Guide, Mills didn't like being termed a "disco diva" because her specialty was "romantic R&B". But she made no less than NINE disco songs.
What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin' & Never Knew Love Like This Before are definetely on my list as well. But also her 1987 hit "You're Puttin' A Rush On me"
Favorite Stephanie Mills ballad: Secret Lady (1987)
Hard to name just one or two from this fantastic voice and talent, however, my personal faves are:
Put your body in it
Whatcha gonna do with my lovin'
Two hearts (duet w/Teddy Pendergrass)
The Medicine song
Something in the way you make me feel
Take your pick, it's all good!

Sam "ALL JAM"
In addition to the Troc morning staples, "Never Knew Love Like this Before" and "What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin", I'd add "Sweet Sensation" and "Pilot Error" (love that arrangement) as my faves.
"Put Your Body In It" is a good dancer also; "You Can Get Over", probably her most uptempo cut.
Ballads: "I Have Learned To Respect The Power Of Love" & "Something In The Way He Makes Me Feel."
Can't forget the duets with Teddy Pendergrass: "Feel The Fire" and the uptempo "Take Me In Your Arms Tonight" from Teddy's terrific "TP" LP.
"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
"You Can't Run From My Love", along with the aforementioned "Put Your Body In It", "Pilot Error" and "Sweet Sensation".
I like a lot of Stephanie's music. My favorites are:
"Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'"
"Sweet Sensation"
"Never Knew Love Like This Before"
"Put Your Body In It"

Glad you posted this comment about the Medicine Song Nicky. Didn't you think the last half of the song seemed to drag after a great beginning?Originally Written by NickNack
As for "Whatcha," I loved the background choir towards the end of the song. All those queens on the dance floor trying to screech, oops I mean sing, along to those high notes!

Medicine Song and
Put Your Body In It
did it for me.
The Medicine Song was a record I had such high hopes for when I first spun it. It was incredibly solid and funky and yes, it was a trifle spongy :) after 4 minutes or so.
What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin
Nuff said,
Peace :D
SENHORES DO GROOVE - BRAZIL
Exactly. The song left you hanging. When it got back to kicking it up the song was in fade-out mode. Everybody cuts loose at the end but it's the like the last three grooves in the vinyl. :x What was the point?Originally Written by keefelc
  Eddie Kendricks couldn't have hit those notes so you know most of us were sounding pretty bad.As for "Whatcha," I loved the background choir towards the end of the song. All those queens on the dance floor trying to screech, oops I mean sing, along to those high notes!
Put Your Body In It was the track that did it on the dance floor for me!
I always recall (as a club goer) that the break in that record used to mix very nicely into the intro of Candido's Jingo ..
:)
My favorite song from Ms Mills would be :
Never knew love like this before as it is a true classic dance record imho.
Only got to know Put your body into it last year, but that also has a certain magic that wants you to hear it over and over again.
The Medicine song could very well be in the fav intro section, as this knocks the socks off the people on the dance floor with the
slammin' intro, always mixed this out right after the first break though![]()
