1973 - Early Disco From Boston, MA?

I bought the LP Playgrounds with the original cast of Zoom, some kids show on PBS from the early 70s, because I read that it had some nice funky drum breaks.

When I scanned through the record, I found it had some nice grooves, but the one below really stands out!

The liner notes indicate the LP was recorded at Intermedia Sound, Boston MA under the direction of one Rupert Holmes, and it was released in 1973.

Would you guys categorize the track below as an example of early disco? It seems to have everything going for it, including what sounds like a 4 on the floor groove. And the vocals aren't as cheesy as I was expecting from a kids record. Would the DJs out there even consider playing this track among other early proto-disco tunes? The rhythm kind of reminds me of the stuff coming out of philly. And the intro is definitely a nod to Motown ("sugar pie honey bunch....").

For a second I thought it was "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch..." Seriously though, you wouldn't catch me playing it, but it definitely has some unmistakable Disco elements in it and Rupert Holmes did do a number of Disco tracks. See:

I guess someone could be adventurous, edit out the kid parts, and maybe make it work? There was a 45 release of this cut, but it doesn't feature an instrumental flip side, which would have been nice.

Rupert Holmes definitely one pop music guy that had soul running through his veins.

It sounds a little better in stereo on the LP, but yeah, I guess I was being a little facetious about DJs playing this. :)
