    I see that a French 12in was issued on Pathe Marconi - with Walter Murphy & the Big Apple Band's A fifth of Beethoven (at 3'02) on the flip.

    . . .and I love the fact she (or a producer) decided to "disco-tize" a tune co-written by her ex-husband (well, they didn't formally divorce until '78).

    Oh please, Miss Charo, known for her incomprehensible English language skills, for her TV talk show appearances where she interspersed "cuchi-cuchi" between every other word, and her voluptuous bod-- was desperate for any chance to get a "hit" record--to extend her longevity as an entertainer. She would have recorded a polka--if that would have sold a copy or two. :icon_twisted:

    Charo should be filed under "entertainers who went "disco" in desperate need of career resuscitation." I always frowned on the Salsoul Orchestra for working with the likes of Charo--what Pia Zadora was unavailable???? It cheapened the Salsoul sound, IMHO!

    Merv Griffin would spend an entire segment having the zany Charo attempt to pronounce Massachusetts. "Mach A Chu Chay" she would repeat. Oh it was hilarious. :icon_eek::icon_confused:

    She did that on Merv Griffin too???

    I saw it on Johnny Carson and you've sort of weakened the punch line ...or maybe by then she'd refined it .
    Her resulting enunciation when casually mentioning Massachusetts came out as Mass-a chu-shits to which the entire audience naughtily giggled

    --- to which Charo then sat upright at the edge of her chair, leaned her buxomness out toward the audience, stared at them bewilderedly bug-eyed and asked ,

    By the way, I don't think the picture is of the Liz Torres on the record, but of another one who did records in the 80s. This Liz Torres sounds older and I think she was some TV personality.

    There was a Liz Torres who charted briefly with "Hurt" in 1976--I always assumed she was the Puerto Rican actress who appeared on "All In The Family." She's still around--larger than before--having had a recurring role on "The Gilmore Girls." But that's not her in the photo.

    Spunky actress, singer and comedienne all rolled up into one, Puerto Rican-American Liz Torres was born in 1947, a native of the Bronx. She began her standup/singing career as a regular performing in various small NYC niteries. It wasn't until she received an invite on "The Tonight Show" that her comic career started blooming on TV and in film.

    Larger in life and girth over the years, Liz has been a broadly familiar ethnic face on the sitcom circuit, having had regular or recurring parts in numerous series. In addition to regular roles on 70s TV variety shows for Melba Moore, Clifton Davis and Ben Vereen, she replaced the late Barbara Colby in the Mary Tyler Moore spinoff "Phyllis" (1975) starring Cloris Leachman following Colby's tragic murder.     I'm not sure if the actress from All In The Family and the singer on the record are the same person, unless she was putting on an accent. Here she is in '97



    "Hurt" was a great track. It was on the flip side of the short version of "Hustle Latino". I managed to find the long version of HL on another 45. Both were produced by Michael Zager.

    The c 104 bpm record is a fab sunbaked blend of tapas bar pop, lounge and disco, crafted with the golden period Salsoul Ork sound, the Sweethearts of Sigma doing the backups, a very catchy melody and gourmet queso by the Estrella Herself. It's short but it does the job.

    The intro sounds more like funk than disco. It's a slower bpm dance song compared to the stuff she did with Salsoul.

    Thank you for pointing me to this record, Remicks! I decided to check out the 45. The A side I already posted from youtube, but the B Side I couldn't find anywhere to listen to. But now that I have it, it's a great track called 'Flamenco Salsa'. It's also a Tony Camillo production, so it's got a nice mid-tempo funky feel like on his Bazuka ("Dynomite") project.

    OK so now my A side only 45 isn't enough :icon_razz: .....gotta get the one with the FLAMENCO SALSA song on it too .:icon_razz::icon_razz: How's Charo on it??
    I suspect for her performance on LA SALSA that she just overdubbed onto what was already a completely finished track ( are her vocals even sort of too loud/ distorted?) ... and I would've been delighted if the B side were an instrumental sans her...

    I don't know where Tony Camillo was based, but it definitely wasn't in Philadelphia. It doesn't sound like the Sigma Sweethearts to my ears. The vocals are definitely more raucous sounding on the A side, but on Flamenco Salsa, they're not so in-your-face. More laid-back and sultry. You'd think the song title would mean she'd play a little of her guitar, but there's none of that on this track.

    It's kind of a shame she didn't do a whole LP with Camillo. I think he could have put together some nice grooves with her. Mind you, her voice sounds campy no matter who's backing her up on rhythm. :)
