say that Jackson told him that he'd borrowed the idea for "Billie Jean"'s bass line from "I Can't Go For That". Except for both songs having funky bass lines I hadn't really made the connection (Hall seemed quite pleased to reveal this), but when I heard Billy Ocean's "Carribean Queen" I knew INSTANTLY where THAT song's bass line came from.
The notes are different, but the feel is the same in both tracks.
If you want to get into the more obvious borrowings of the early 80s, look no further than Huey Lewis and Ray Parker Jr

Remember the 1983 single called "Do It Again (Medley with Billie Jean)" by Club House?

michael jackson was a fantastically, talented individual who will be sadly missed. I did not hear the Daryl Hall tribute, but heard tributes from several other celebs including Mark Lester, Uri Geller and the like.
I simply loved his music and followed him from his Jackson 5 days onwards.
He was a musical legend.
Michael RIP
I went to YouTube to listen to this medley (I had a feeling it would be there) and sure enough it is.....I like it, it's cute. I remember that this style of blending 2 songs with similar tempos was for a while known as mash ups, and someone in the music industry tried very hard to make it popular, I recall MTV or VH1 doing entire shows devoted to these mash ups. I suspected that they wouldn't catch on, probably at least due in part to the kind of licensing and publishing issues involved. I'm very anxious to see what will happen to Jackson's partial ownership of the Beatles publishing. And while we're talking about blending music, have very many of you heard Danger Mouse's "Gray" album blending Jay-Z with the Beatles' White Album? I have, and I feel most of it doesn't work well.
