Music That Makes You Want to Take Drugs

Earlier this week, I and a friend were driving into Berkeley while listening to a compilation I'd made of the British '60s rock group Small Faces that includes "Here Come the Nice" and "Itchycoo Park," which both contain fairly blatant and celebratory drug references. I blurted out, "This makes a far more convincing argument to take drugs than the Grateful Dead."

Then I started to think about the different kinds of drug songs, both disco and otherwise, and how some of them to my ears characterize various drug experiences in ways that seem marvelous, while others make me want to run in the opposite direction.

When it comes to druggy dance songs, I love:

    El Coco - "Cocomotion"
the Glass Family - "Smoke Your Troubles Away"
    B.T. Express - "Peace Pipe"
Elite - "Poppers" (an obscure Italian Disco cut, but a hilarious one)
Tantra - “The Hills of Katmandu” (this one isn’t obviously about drugs, but the lyrics could’ve been lifted from any number of ‘60s psychedelic rock records, and the overall vibe of the music is totally trippy)
E-Zee Possee - "Everything Starts With an E" (possibly the most overt pro-Ecstasy record of the early '90s)

    I don't love:

    anything by the Grateful Dead
    anything by Jimmy Buffett

What are your favorites and anti-favorites?

    2) OXYGENE 4 - Jean Michel Jarre (my fave j.o. background music back in the day!)

    3) NOW I NEED YOU/WORKING THE MIDNIGHT SHIFT - Donna Summer (T.R.I.P.P.Y.)

    4) PARTY BOYS - Foxy (D.R.U.G.G.Y.)

Re: Music That Makes You Want to Take Drugs

Hehehe good topic, over the past 5 years I've developed tastes for a variety of music genres and late 60s/early 70s psychedelic acid rock happens to be one of my favourite genres as I dig trippy music man! And whilst I'm not a druggo, hearing stuff like "Alexander" by Electric Banana, "Speed" by Ron Wray Light Show, "Summertime Blues" by Blue Cheer, "Hard Lovin Man" by Deep Purple and anything by Jimi Hendrix gets me tempted to wanna go on drugs but don't need to anyhow as the music itself puts me on a trip!

Anyhow in the category of funk and disco music, obvious choices would be Funkadelics early psychedelic funk with Eddie Hazels fuzzed out guitar work like:
    Super Stupid
    I've Got A Thing
Testify (the live 1969 TV version YouTube - George Clinton and The Parliaments 1969 (Part 1) starts at 2:58, what a cool song!!!:icon_biggrin:)

And there's the Temptations early work like:
    Psychedelic Shack
    Cloud Nine

Sly & The Family Stone are good candidates with:
    Stand
    Family Affair
    Sing A Simple Song
    Wanna Take You Higher
    etc.............

I think I'm sort of looking more to the days when these funk bands were more psychedelic rock oriented, so going onto the funky disco side of things, examples of trippy dance songs would be:

Isley Brothers - That Lady, Midnight Sky (because of the fuzz guitar)
New York Disco Machine - If You Really Don't Love Me (very very very trippy)
Rinder & Lewis - Lust, Envy
Cloud One - Atmosphere Strut, Spaced Out, Jump Jump Jump etc... (their synthy spacy sounds are very trippy)
Universal Robot Band - Dance & Shake Your Tambourine, Space Disco, Sunshine, Freak With Me etc... (very much similar to Cloud One, spacy and trippy synths)
Crown Heights Affair - Dreaming A Dream (the drum beats seem to be distorted with a flanger effect which was popular in the psychedelic scene)
Pleasure - Ghettos Of The Mind
    Chocolats - Brasilia Carnival
Billy Preston - Struttin, Space Race, Outta Space
Commodores - Blow Your Mind, Machine Gun
Moon People - Hippy, Skippy, Moon Street (late 60s funk which was sampled in Christine Aguleira's "Ain't No Other Man", very trippy stuff)
    ORS - Moonboots
Cerrone - Supernature (obviously anything with sequencer synths like this is trippy in a disco way and puts one in a trance)
Telex - Le Fond De L'air Est Rouge (this song makes me vision colourful votexes lol:icon_lol:)
    Mass Production - Sky High

A couple more good ones come to mind:

Stone Roses - Fools Gold (a late 80s stoner rock song with a lot of 70s funk style wah guitar and drum beats which makes it danceable, this is a very trippy song)
Splash - The First Galaxy (another great space age style dance song)

This a personal fave; it could be used for a 'trip' or indeed in a porn movie - or both!

'High Above The Clouds' by Narada Michael Walden is kinda trippy (not that I'd condone the use of drugs kidz!); NMW coincidentally plays drums on that James Mason track!:icon_eek:

    For me it's:

Peter Tosh's "Buk-in-hamm Palace" 12" versions...especially the dub version "Dubbin Bukk-in-hamm" with the fabulous background vocals from Ms Gwen Guthrie herself.

I knew this topic would provoke interesting responses. What's druggy to some is sexy to others and vice versa.

This one to my ears is both:

Thanks Marky for the "Waves' clip; I hadn't seen that before. The mermaids are very nice!
