G'day everyone.
I've been following up on the breaking news about Soul Train since Don Cornelius sold the rights to MadVision Entertainment in 2008 and the new owners are putting forward a lot of wonderful projects for the show. One of them is the release of vintage episodes on DVD for the public as they are aware that there is HUUUUUUUGE demand from the public and there is a big market for the release of old episodes and licensing clips worldwide which is wonderful!!!:icon_biggrin:
The article can be viewed here:
'Soul Train' Vaults Opened For DVD Deal
I'm sure a lot of you are aware that that MadVision have put up an official Soul Train YouTube page YouTube - soultrain's Channel in which they have uploaded quite a number of clips and are continuelly adding more clips on a weekly basis, and these are fresh from the original tapes in the vaults in pristine quality!
Anyways I'm so looking forward to the official releases of these awesome episodes, it's gonna be totally bloody awesome!!!:icon_biggrin:
Australia mate! The land of many great funkateers!
Aaaahhh!!! Something truly spectacular to look forward to!
Thanks for the info FunkyDude.
I can't imagine how they managed the licensing aspect of each episode, since the show's original contracts didn't take the royalties-from-reruns into account. But I'm thrilled they've negotiated a way through the red-tape.
You can bet I'll be buying each DVD, the day they become available.
I was lucky, in that South Florida was one of the markets that ran "The Best Of Soul Train", at 2am on Saturday nights, during the 2007 thru 2008 season. Each episode took me right back to where I was and what I was doing, at that point in my teens.
Remember taking out your dollar bills and waving them around while dancing to The O'Jays' "For The Love Of Money", at school dances, or house parties???

LOVED watching Damita Jo Freeman,Jody Watley and Jeffery Daniels"he's the man that taught Michael Jackson to moon walk"I discussed it with him once..I was going to interview him a couple years back but declined because he was a bit unreliable,I think I will try hook that up again ,it seems quite relivant at this time..they were my favorite S.T. Dancers..The soul train line was insane~!!

Was always supremely jealous that we did not get Soul Train in the UK and lived for my trips to NY to see my family as teenager. I was always glued to the box for Soul Train. They tried to do a Uk version in the 80's but that did not last long. It will be interesting to see the DVD's when they come.
"You can dance forever if you want to"
Yes, this is good news. It was mentioned in the funk soul music forum as well.
Michael Jackson's Moonwalk was based on the backslide. It was one of the moves Poppers used to use in the late 70s. But it dates back to many decades earlier in various forms.
At the end of this clip
And at 3:13 of this clip
MJ just made more people aware of the move. The jury is still out as to whether he even came up with the name 'moonwalk' or did someone else do that too?

TV One here in the U.S. just broadcasted their second season (very short - only 4 episodes per season!) of "Unsung." This year the hour long episodes focused on Minnie Riperton, Melba Moore, Florence Ballard and Shalamar! They had extensive interviews with Jeffrey, Jody Watley and Howard Hewitt. They filmed Jeffrey in Japan, where he apparently now lives.
I would not leave my house on Saturdays because of Soul Train-and the Soul Train line would be discussed all week.My favorite dancer was Patricia Davis(she was
an expert at "the robot")
I just hope it features the dancers and not just the
guests performing-that would be tragic!

I think the dancers were a big part of the show. I was too young to watch it, but I've watched all the clips on youtube. You can see that from what people were watching out of LA, it would spread dance styles like The Robot and Locking out beyond the West Coast. Eventually later styles of dancing like popping and break dancing would develop from people watching it on TV on shows like soul train.
They definitely have to include a few soul train line clips. Hopefully complete ones and not just short snippets!
Disco Funk
Here's an interview where Daniels talks about his relationship with Michael Jackson
And a tribute video of Daniels from his Soul Train days
I also hope they include at least one performance from the Lockers with Tony Basil, Fred 'Rerun' Berry, etc...

Any news??????
Any date of realease ????
You know, it was on Soul Train that I first saw Fred Berry aka "Re-Run" from WHAT'S HAPPENIN', perform his famous dance with the dance group called THE LOCKERS!!!:icon_razz:
Those Cats were AMAZING!!! They were doing the Moon Walk LONG before Michael Jackson stated it!!! I wonder where they are today?
