The Indie Generation Rediscover 1970's Disco

Thought this might be of interest - from the Sunday Times in the UK:

Interesting indeed (thanks Greg!) ..... and for those of us who are aware of "disco nights" or "disco 24/7" clubs in our particular city, please let the rest of us know that groovy info as who knows, that may suggest a fun travel destination to that particular city this summer !!!

I'm all in favour of young people discovering disco music, but it seems that every couple of years for the last 20 years there's an article like this one predicting disco's return. Current DJs are always going to play old disco/dance tracks now & again, & there are always going to be nostalgia nights, especially now that house/hip-hop seem so lacking in new ideas. I've visited some of these club nights mentioned in the article & the music is often good but they often lack decent venues with good sound/light systems so that the music can be fully appreciated.

thought the same thing .....magazines always have space needing to be filled ...

the logistics are just not there for this to happen ...... when Big Band makes its big return ....when 50's rockabilly makes its big return .... when surf music, psychedelia, , Motown, reincarnate ... disco too will have its turn..

these things happen when they do within a myriad of conditions that come together under the cosmos that is nothing short of magical ....it can never be artificially duplicated.

Michael Jackson is dead. In 10 years , 20 years ,thirty years ,fifty years they'll try to say he's "back" too.

You're so right remmy. We must savour everything at the time because whatever they are they will be, in the words of the song, gone too soon.:icon_cry:

The article was quite interesting and its always good to see some sort of disco resurgence no matter how small or big. I would love to see a club locally here in Vancouver do a proper disco night, but so far I haven't seen it happen. I guess its time to try and win the lottery, open my own club and DJ at the club myself.

I think the recycling of the musical fads or tastes has more to do with the younger generation who grew up on a particular type of music being old enough to influence musical programming, etc... and being nostalgic for the music of their youth. People listening to dance music or going clubbing in the early 90s were also being treated to disco music segments, which usually consisted of the same 4 or 5 songs - Michael Jackson's Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Chic - Le Freak, Anita Ward - Ring My Bell, or Village People - YMCA.

It's always good to hear that younger people are not forgetting or burying musical history. However they come to it....they come. Let them decide what to do with it....just like we did, back in the day when we were exposed to it.

The idea that it cant come around again is foolish.
Man, do you realize how many of you (us) have become bitter, cantakerous (albeit with impeccable musical taste) old men?

When I was a kid in the 70's they revived the 40's and the 50's. So much so that several disco musical producers (which was the current fad then) did Disco versions of those 40's and 50's songs. Hell, last time I checked some of THOSE IMITATIONS (sincerest form of flattery) stood the test of time as well. Don't believe it? Pull out your Dr. Buzzard's album......

SandraDee...Disco does not have to return. It never went away.

I saw that article in the Sunday Times and even went as far as trying to find out where the local club in Manchester was (Sandy - have you ever heard of or been to El Diablo?). I thought whatever happened to get more airplay to less well known tracks is good in my book. That same week, I heard a track on one of the latest Hed Kandi compilations that sampled part of the piano line from From East to West by Voyage, it sounded great. It is tracks like this that I want more visablility given to, not the same old tracks mentioned earlier. I also thought the comparison/parallels with the social events of the 70s was interesting.

Sandy - a friend went to Oddest in Chorlton at the weekend and said it was all "old school disco" tracks, I'm not sure what he meant by that and if it was all the same old songs.

Sorry to be a miserable git DC, but I think it's about 27 years since a dance record got released that featured strings, horn sections, clavinets, cowbells, congas, analogue sequencers, syndrums & girly choruses (OK, not many records featured all those things but you get my drift...). To me, that was the 'disco' sound, everything that's come after is dance music of whatever subgenre that happens to be - old jack swing, garage, hi-nrg, trip hop, boogie, trance, 2-step, acid bungalow, whatever! For me disco was a particular sound & era which will never return, but thank goodness we can still listen & dance to it even if that's generally in our own homes. I know millions would disagree but that's my opinion.

Oddest? That's an, erm, odd name for a club!:icon_confused: Given people's varying views on what 'disco' is, your friend's description could mean anything tote. I'd love to pay a visit though, is it the place in Wilbraham Road? (Chorlton is where the BeeGees grew up!:icon_razz:)

I don't know Chorlton but I was told the bar is "on the main drag" so I suppose it could be Wilbraham Road.

I take it back on the music, my friend just told me that the DJ played Bourgie Bourgie by John Davis and had a Madleen Kane album behind the deck (by the description it sounded like Sounds of Love). He told me that a lot more tracks unknown to him were played but he assumed I would know them.

He asked the DJ (who was fairly young) how he got into the music and the DJ said there was a vinyl shop across the road from the bar that had all these records.

Just got to convince the b/f we need to get a taxi out of town to Chorlton!

That'll be 'King Bee records' where I often get my vinyl from. Wonder if it gets very busy at 'Oddest'?
