    YES!!!---Wayne Newton Did DISCO !

    *****

On a nice specially star shaped clear vinyl 12" :

And it's really not bad ...not bad at all .... subdued ....
too bad someone didn't tell him Melba Moore had already had a runaway club hit with this one before they put so much into this .....

This is so depressing.:icon_confused: All the threads today seem to be showing tracks that are completely pointless/talentless rip-offs/cash-ins. It's always nice to hear tracks that you've never heard before, & many forgotten tracks are absolute gems (& many thanks to all the people on here wh've exposed me to stuff i knew nothing about BTW), but some days I feel that the more obscure stuff I hear the more I understand why disco was so hated at the time. (I can't believe I just said that 'cos I always defend anything remotely disco to the hilt!:icon_eek:)

Who is Wayne Newton, some sort of Reno/Las Vegas entertainer? I think he's nowhere as good as Waylon whose "Creme de la Creme" , also from 1979, cannot be discussed enough in these pages of the discomusic.com

I remember the album version of Carly's song - since it was on the Boys in the trees Lp that I had bought (because of You belong to me).The original was disco-ish (I should say lite disco) and I'm not surprised that it was chosen as the track to work in clubs.

In the same vein - I do remember that tracks from Nicolette Larson were also very disco-friendly...and I'm not talking about the 12" mix done for Lotta Love.
She also had an uptempo - dare I say disco- track called Dancin' Jones (featuring Michael Omartian on keyboards).

I seem to vaguely remember her next album also opened with a danceable track called Radioland.

Actually, 'Love You Inside Out' by The Bee Gees, was a throwback in sound to tracks on the '76 LP Children of The World LP, making me wonder if it was a leftover from that session. Wayne seems to have copied that version, rather than try something different like McFadden & Whitehead did with Melba Moore.

Here are the Bee Gees tracks I was referring to, including the original Stepped

Sorry to disappoint Miss Dee ... but I'm just sharing what I discover along the way as I explore the vast land of disco ...

And I find all of it fascinating .......... not depressing :icon_question: :icon_confused: at all !!:icon_question:

But for balance, why not initiate some threads of your own that celebrate the disco of your liking.

I, for one, would enjoy that and we could use some variety around here . :icon_cool:

Thanks for sharing this info with us Remi, and take no notice of Miss Dee, it must be her 'time' :icon_mad:
Anyway the Wayne disc you mentioned is NOT actually a 12" is it ? it is really a 7" made into an 11" shape :icon_razz: There IS however a 12 promo version of it.

Your thread seems to have gathered some discussion....but WHO actually was Wayne ??????:icon_question: ands why is it so remarkable that he did Disco :icon_question:

Wayne Newton is a big singer in Las Vegas, a real cocktail lounge singer, but who had a few radio hits in his youth.

I would say his biggest hit, and signature song, is this one.

Sorry to be negative remmy. I always said that if I had nothing positive to say I'd say nothing after all the flame wars that used to kick off round here, but unfortunately I was a bit down yesterday so i immediately took myself off to watch 'High Anxiety' & 'Fawlty Towers'! & I'm feeling alot better now & find these tracks much more enjoyable with a new perspective.
In response to your request for me to initiate threads, I used to but my threads often got no response so i thought my ideas must be boring, & I never complained that I'd been sent to Coventry like that attention-seeking disco-disc! I'll probably be thought of as a total bitch now, which is amazing when you think that Quinny was ALWAYS negative & many people thought he was 'good old Quinny' & they miss him so much, it's a strange old world.

Re: YES!!!---Wayne Newton Did DISCO !

Isn't it annoying that CD compilations of artists NEVER include their attempts at disco do they? I've got compilations by Carly & Ringo & guess what, these tracks aren't on there, & I have dozens more by various different artists that are the same.:icon_evil: (Oh no, I've just relaized I'm getting negative again, sorry!) I can think of one exception though, I do have a Johnny Mathis CD that actually include 'Gone, Gone, Gone'! (but unfortunately not 'Begin The Beguine).

Isn't it funny (or ironic) that when Paul McCartney and Wings did their disco song Goodnight Tonight, two years after Ringo, that they also wore tuxes and gave it a nostalgic nightclub feel?

    YouTube - GOODNIGHT TONIGHT - Paul McCartney & Wings - 1979

Though Paul did it much better.

How true !!! Then we must be thankful that Barbra has seen fit to include both The Main Event and No more tears (Enough is enough) on many of her compilations !!!

Yes, you're right, I was surprised to find 'Main Event' on her comps, so here's to Barbra always being the gay favourite.:icon_razz:
