So, I'm kind of a strange character. I was about 11 or so, and found an 8-track in my father's truck, self-titled "A Taste of Honey" album. It was 1986, but we had an 8-track player at home, and I LOVED this album--especially it's notable hit "Boogie Oogie Oogie." My older brother had been collecting records for years, and I then started myself. Next was the group's "Another Taste," on which my favorite song was "Take the Boogae or Leave It." I bought "Twice as Sweet," but the only song I liked was "Superstar Superman." I looked at the tracks and noticed that, unlike the other songs on this album, this one was copyrighted 1979, instead of 1980. I learned that the cut-off point seemed to be 1980.
Soon I had every Traamps album, various compilations and soundtracks, and records by Sylvester, Silver Convention (which I found cheesy), Donna Summer, Village People, MFSB, and many others. Other people thought I was crazy for liking this music, but I didn't care. I loved it!
At some point, I got into alternative, gothic/industrial and some punk music, and at some point, since I no longer had a record player, got rid of all my records. I regret that now! About a year ago, I rediscovered my love of disco, and have heard so much stuff I didn't know existed years ago: Chic (whose productions are my favorite), "Born To Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez, "I Like What You're Doing To Me" by Young & Co., and many others. I hope to find more still, but it's hard to find out since a lot of things are only on record. I hope to find more good music through boards like this one.
My lesson: never get rid of music you've liked, even of you're bored of it.
