    Return to Casablanca 1978 album

"Return to Casablanca" compilation (1978)? My copy is stamped "special promotional copy" and has "Rumour Has It" on it twice. Anyone else have this? Wondering if it's rare.

re: Return to Casablanca 1978 album

It's reasonably rare, as it was meant for in-store airplay. But you can, almost always, find a copy of it on eBay, for varying prices.

"Return to Casablanca II" (which contained a single LP of current releases, and the TGIF In-Store Airplay LP) is harder to find. And "Return to Casablanca III" is mostly a promotional tool for Parachute Records (the lesser of the 3 issues), is harder, still.

Finding Volumes 1, Number One NBD-20114-2DJ (narrated by Frankie Crocker) and Volume 1, Number Two NBD-20131DJ (narrated by Eric Chase. As was the TGIF In-Store Airplay LP NBD-20125DJ) in their original packaging (boxed-sets, containing the cassette and 8-track releases of the compilations, as well as the promotional booklets) are extremely rare. While Volume 1, Number Three NBD-20135DJ (again, narrated by Eric Chase) was only released as a single In-Store Airplay LP.

Assembling the complete sets, through finding the individual items (LPs, booklets, cassettes 8-track) is easier than finding the complete sets, in their original box-covers.

The earlier In-Store Airplay promos, Special Edition - From The Casbah - Music To Delight Your Customers NBLP 000, seems to be the hardest to find. With Disco Forever DISCO 76 (which was slightly re-tooled & re-released, commercially, as Get Down And Boogie NBLP 7042), coming-in as a close 2nd.

Then there's a UK release of a From The Casbah sampler (not the 12" with Funkytown & the Evelyn Thomas medley), that I've only seen, once. And have yet to get a copy for myself.

Add to that the Selected Cuts from "Once Upon A Time" which was released, simultaneously, as a double 12" set for DJs, NBD20110DJ and as a single LP for radio airplay, NBD20109DJ and the Cannes Film Festival pre-release of the "Midnight Express" soundtrack NBD20132DJ (yes...it's different than the commercial release) and the Donna Summer open-ended interview disc to promote the Live & More Tour NBD20126 and the Paul Jabara interview disc (another UK press that I've only seen once and have yet to acquire for myself) and the KISS promo samplers, KISS '76 (a pre-tour promo LP) and a couple others... And there's plenty of Casablanca promo-only releases to collect.

My set is 2nd-hand, from a DJ I knew back in '78. And he tossed the box they came in, before I got them.

I'd sell my soul for a copy in the original packaging!

    Never say "never"!

On occassion, you'll come across an eBay seller who doesn't know the value of what he has. :icon_confused:
(most pop/rock sellers have no clue what Disco items are worth, outside of their usual demographic)

Then you look for things that are spelled wrong ie: Constantinos, or Constandinos, or even Cerrome...

I laid-low until the last 15 seconds of an auction on a MINT Japanese pressing of Romeo & Juliet, wherein Costandinos was spelled wrong and it was mis-categorized under soundtracks. It ended-up being me against one other buyer, who caught the misspelling. I did a max-bid of $50 and he did a bid of $25. Time ran out and I got it for $26.

When it comes to Casablanca items (and if you're not lucky enough to be in a position to troll the used record shops of LA...VINYLLIFE, I truly envy you!), you have to play-the-game. Setting-up running-searches with e-mail alerts, or bookmarking specific searches, is very helpful, too.

If you're patient, you can score some serious pieces, for under $30.

These came in a box? That's something I've never seen. I can remember unpacking the TGIF sets at the disco pool. Each set of 10 was shrink-wrapped together, but not boxed. Interesting...

I'd sell my soul for a copy in the original packaging!

    I'd love that box too.

The only complete TGIF promo I have is the album, packaged in a die-cut slipcover with 4 bios and 4 black and white photographs of Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Paul Jabara and the Commodores and a fifth bio-only "The making of a movie: Thank God It's Friday" (or something like that).
I have some of the 12's from when I worked at Titus-Oaks records in Bklyn, NY back in the day. We sold used records and got lots of promos.

We had maybe three sets of the TGIF 12's and all of the boxes got thrown away......

The 10 pak I have did not come in a box. It is string wrapped like the Sunday Paper!!:icon_eek:...you know..where it's actually cutting into the paper sleeves. And yes it was shrink wrapped. And yes Vinyl shopping in Los Angeles is incredible. To top it off....my job allows me to drive around L.A every single day if I want to....I shop for records every single day of my life....my VINYLLIFE that is. Ok do not read the following if you are Vinyl obsessed.....Just last week I found the Under the Skin 12" along side of the New Birth Deeper 12" along with some other Warner Bros' 12" singles.............$1 DOLLAR EACH!! One store I go to is holding a little bundle of 12" Disco promos for me....All 1975 Promos!! Today I picked up 20 NRG/ITALO Records...Man I love Vinyl!!I would love to share what I find...I really mean that. Any one coming to Los Angeles, ever,....come visit me!!!!You can go through my Garage and then I will show you the town...and every record store known and un-known to most. Again Stephen thanks for all you share with us.

I'd never seen the "From The Casbah" since those kinds of prize possessions rarely made it across the border unless you went and found them, so thanks for posting that pic.

Steven, do you remember the Pattie Brooks "Heartbreak in Disguise" 12" with the mastering error ?
