I'm having some religious experience listening to Gary Wright's "Dream Weaver". Then I felt like a whore when Andrea True Connection's "More, more, more (Pt.1)" got into my airwaves.

Speaking of guilty pleasures, I was delighted to hear "Coming Up", by Paul Mc Cartney, again. The studio version has always beeb far better for me.

My last, but not least, selection is the monumental album "First Take". It shows Roberta Flack at her best.

I received a huge stack of CD’s and MD’s from my good Internet friend Francis from Belgium. He and I had reviewed each other’s collections and created a wish list for each other. So I have been listening to some stuff I dearly wanted but had never found, and some other stuff that he pulled together because he thought I would like it. There is too much to mention, so I will just list some of the highlights.

Daybreak – First Light. This is a 1983 release, which I suspect is an alias for Paul Hardcastle. Paul used this song later to remix it with D’Train’s “You’re the one for me”, still one of my all-time favorite remixes.

Cliff Dawson – I can love you better. Never heard of before, but excellent.

Roz Ryan – Boy where have you been. See above. Found it already online and bought it. This song could be remade today and would sound very ‘garage’.

The Jammers – What have you got to loose. A forgotten Salsoul gem that I now will have to buy. Apparently it is hard to find.

Tracy Weber – Sure shot instrumental version. Not just the song without the lyrics, but an excellent synthesizer version on Quality records. I saw online that there is also a Larry Levan version but da man was sometimes a little too high for me. Does anybody know more about Larry’s version?

Howard Johnson – Keepin’ love new (album). An excellent album. Highlights for me are “So fine”, “This is heaven” and “Keepin’ love new”. I had this album on tape but I welcome this much cleaner version very much!

Klique – It’s winning time (album). Another excellent album I knew from back then, but I had totally forgotten “Love’s dance” – what a great track.

Flowchart – Ask the boss (to raise my salary)/Wanna let you know/I saw him make eyes at you/Ask the boss (instrumental version). Francis recorded it as he and I share a passion for Jacques Fred Petrus. Flowchart sounds exactly like Change/High Fashion but is not related to the late great JFP at all. This is really good stuff which came out on Maximus records in 1983. Who knows more????

Ozone – Gigolette. Mrs. Teena Marie was involved in this excellent track. What an awesome, and to me totally new Motown gem. I love it! It reminded me a bit of Mary Wells’ Gigolo track, another forgotten gem.

Kadenza – Let’s do it. Now I might be mistaking, but was this a remake of Convertion’s track with the same title? The writer of the Convertion song is Martha Williams. Can someone confirm? I like Kadenza’s version much better by the way…

Mtume – Theatre of the mind (album). Hmmm, not their best album. But I always liked New Face Deli and I still do.

Tawatha – Welcome to my dream (album). First solo album of the Mtume lead singer. What a voice. There are a lot of ballads, but with her voice I don’t mind… And "No more tears" is one of the most beautiful tracks ever!

52nd Street – Children of the night (album). I always liked this Nick Martinelli product. Although the album does not contain any of the long 12” versions that were released from it, singer Diane Charlemagne sounds awesome. 52nd Street produced one other album called “Something’s going on” which contains the beautiful “Tomorrow” track. They later reinvented themselves as Encore and Cool Down Zone. More recently, Diane has been singing on Satoshi Tomiie’s Re-licked album.

The many other CD’s were compilation CD’s, which contain such a vast array of tracks that it will require the coming weekend to work my way through them. It is a good thing that Monday is a national holiday here in Japan…

Finally, I have been listening to the new Masters At Work “Our time is coming” album. What can I say… Patti Austin, India, Roy Ayers, James Ingram and Stephanie Mills. If you liked them before you will love them again. Awesome!

    Maarten,

Flowchart is a studio project from Italy that came out around 83. Their LP is one of the rarest I know (I miss it). I think the production team is the same of another italian gem of that period, out on Maximus too: Game feat. Mike Cannon, whose production credits are to R Trevisani and F Zanotti (sounds familiar????).

Both these records are very sought after now and cost a fortune

Break Machine "Street Dance", now that rings a bell. During Australia's Rage January season, they play old episodes of an Aussie pop TV show called Countdown. And one of them they played was from 1984 featuring Cyndi Lauper hosting the show and one of the music videos played was Break Machine's "Street Dance". Great song and great clip too.

I surveyed the crowd. While some of the kids wearing early 80’s ghetto fabulous-styled stuff were doing good the emerging Limahl clones and Aha member lookalikes were an unsettling sight. In addition, there were too many figures in ill-fitting and cheap Versace knockoffs, not a pretty sight.

Where are the greatest looking crowds, then? The best I’ve seen have been in Barcelona. But that's another thread so:

This is what I played, with some invaluable vinyl help from Graham Start:

Grace Jones: La Vie en Rose

Malcom McLaren & Catherine Deneuve: Paris Paris – luxurious mellow groove

Liane Foly: La Nuit Halogene – jazzy vocalist over grinding beat

Mc Solaar: La La La La – track du jour

Vanessa Paradis: L’Amour dans la Bouche – sensual new latin dance version of the Gainsbourg classic

LTG Exhange: Corazon – made huge by Dimitri of Paris, perfect latin beat with bongos and hissing hi-hats (and now I got the orig. Fania pressing, eat your heart out mates or how does the saying go in english )

    Karen Young: Hot Shot

Bernard LaVilliers: Night Bird – with crime movie sound effects and French references to gangsters with machine guns, junkies and hookers

Serge Gainsbourg: Love On The Beat – severe punishment methods for the above

Marc Almond: Deep Night – dark moody throbber

Louise Leshter: Love Money – sleazy transgender artiste over hard Munich backing

Laurie Marshall: The Disco Spaceship – curiously compelling

Giorgio: I Wanna Funk With You Tonite

    Cerrone: Love In C Minor

Culture Beat: Das Erdbeermund – house with an effeminate male voice reading poetry in German

    Amanda Lear: Intellectually

Cassandra: Disco Panther – a less famed gender illusionist, a Celso Valli production

Trax: Watch Out For The Boogie Man – immaculate Munich stomper by Pete Bellotte & Keith Forsey
