I just got some new disco compilation CDs. Now I'm wondering if some of the songs I didn't know before were well-received in the clubs or not. At least they do not appear on the top 500/ top 700 list on this website. Maybe they were "just bubbling under" the charts?
The songs I'm talking about are:
Roy Ayers: Fever (5:46) 1979
Atlantic Starr: (Let's) Rock 'N' Roll (7:29) 1979
One Way Featuring Al Hudson: Music (7:11) 1979
Dexter Wansel: Dance With Me Tonight (5:37) 1977
MFSB: Picnic In The Park (4:10) 1976
Stanley Clarke: Just A Feeling (6:02) 1979
Debbie Jacobs: Hot Hot (Give It All You Got) (6:54) 1979
Plunky And The Oneness Of Juju: Every Way But Loose (8:28) 1982
Rhyze: Just How Sweet Is Your Love (6:54) 1980
Four Tops: The Show Must Go On (7:01) 1977
Cuba Gooding: Disco Royale (6:13) 1979
Rozalin Woods: Whatcha' Gonna Do About It (7:51) 1979
AKB: Stand Up - Sit Down (8:11) 1979
T.J.M.: Small Circle Of Friends (11:13) 1979
Patrick Juvet: Oω Sont Les Femmes? (6:16) 1977
Lenny Williams: When I'm Dancin' (4:48) 1979
Thelma Houston: Im Here Again (6:31) 1977
Jimmy Briscoe And The Beavers: Into The Milky Way (7:52) 1979
Chilly: For Your Love (8:57) 1978 (probably this release:Chilly - For Your Love (12", S/Sided, Maxi) at Discogs)
Morning, Noon & Night: Bite Your Granny (7:20) 1977
Thanks for any input that will be given.
By the way, other highlights on these CDs, at least for me, include:
Chi-Lites: My First Mistake (5:38)
The Players Association: Turn The Music Up! (6:48)
Made In U.S.A.: Melodies (7:54)
Gregg Diamond: Star Cruiser (10:08)
Lorraine Johnson: Feed The Flame (8:06)
Joe Thomas: Plato's Retreat (6:36)
Bionic Boogie: Risky Changes (6:17)
These all were obviously disco hits (top 500/700 list) but I only knew some of them before (Melodies, Star Cruiser and Risky Changes). Great music!
"Wisdom is the province of the aged, but the heart of a child is pure."

The only two I heard on the radio at the time:
AKB: Stand Up - Sit Down (8:11) 1979 ; disco #12.
Patrick Juvet: Oω sont les femmes? (6:16) 1977 [this one being in French was a very big hit in France ; actually it's Juvet's signature song even now. The English version released in 1978 didn't have the same degree of success.]
This long version is available on "For DJ's Only: Rare Extended Versions 01" by Universal Italia. It's a compilation that I didn't find on Amazon.com/.co.uk/.de/.fr. So I resorted to purchasing it from an Italian online store for 13.50 Euro (plus shipping). A seller on the Dutch Ebay site had it as well but was charging 22+ Euro (plus shipping) for a single CD compilation.
Oh, and the Rozalin Woods song is on "For DJ's Only: Rare Extended Versions 04".

#12 on the disco charts is quite good, right?
I've never seen it on CD before as far as I can remember.
I hope this doesn't mean that everything else mentioned were just filler tracks destined to empty the dancefloor.
Most of them are from 1979 so they had lots of competition releasewise.

Nice list anyway. Most of the songs come from the Italian series "For Dj's Only Rare Extended Versions" (four volumes I think).

I've only seen one seller offering 3 volumes on Ebay so far.
You have to take into consideration though that I've only discovered these CDs myself last weekend when I checked discogs.com for Gregg Diamond material. Just imagine how surprised I was when I saw Star Cruiser (12" version) on a CD tracklisting.:icon_lol:
Edit:
I just checked Amazon.com/.co.uk/.de/.fr. again for both "for dj's only" and "for djs only.
To my surprise the French site list volume 1, and only volume 1, but it's "currently unavailable". The good news is that the US-site lists at least volume 1 and likely volume 5 as well.

Musiquelover--using the Billboard chart book, this is what I found for your titles:
These made the U.S. Billboard Disco Top 40/100--or whatever # they used, as it varied over time....

"Lost inside adorable illusion...."
They are all here (page in Italian); apparently they will release a sixth and a seventh volume: For Dj's Only Rare Extended Version Da AlwaysCD, Compravendita CD Nuovi e Usati, Vendita Per Corrispondenza, Import Da Tutto Il Mondo Di Disco Funky, Afro, Soul Groove e JazzFunk Anni 70 e 80.
"Oω sont les femmes?"
Of course, but it was a European hit too (the song is co-written with Jean-Michel Jarre who produced the lp).
In France people love Juvet's earlier material (pre-disco) sung in French, initially under the guidance of Claude Franηois. "Oω sont les femmes ?" is its bigger hit. What he did after "Oω sont les femmes ?", and that includes the Morali/Belolo lp's and "Gettingto the heart of me", the Tony Swaim/Steve Jolley 1983 song, is virtually forgotten here.
Here is the song:
Musique "Patrick JUVET - Ou sont les femmes " de DiscoFan (Musique > Soul / Funk / Disco) - wat.tv
His first English-speaking song in 1973, "I will be in LA". He wrote the original song for Claude Franηois ("Le lundi au soleil" in French).
YouTube - Patrick Juvet - I will be in L.A (1973)
Juvet is a regular fixture on French tv (and Swiss tv I imagine, Juvet is actually Swiss) and he does many retro shows. His last attempts to do something new were:
"Cruising bar" in 1991: YouTube - CRUISING BAR
"Ηa c'est Paris" in 1999: YouTube - CA C'EST PARIS
That's nice to know.
Wow.
This is more than I hoped for, looks like a lot of rummaging through old magazines.
I guess this means these were more miss than hit then:
Roy Ayers: Fever (5:46) 1979
Lenny Williams: When I'm Dancin' (4:48) 1979
They're cool nonetheless and sounding really danceable.
The problem is the time of release I'd assume (1979) and that maybe no longer 12" version was released for "When I'm Dancin'".:icon_question:
Also, for anyone interested: For DJ's Only: Rare Extended Versions @ Disco Music.com
