Best From Artist 39 - Salsoul Orchestra

Should it be "Tangerine", should it be "Ooh I Love It." They're all good but I much prefer the less often played "You're Just The Right Size."

For me, and this is very, very personal, The Salsoul Orchestra wasn't the kind of music I wanted to play, back then. For me, they were an anathema to what I wanted to hear. To me, they sounded 20 years out of date and were too syrupy sweet and made me cringe. Sorry folks, but the strings were the one thing that had me covering my ears.
If only they'd done more small ensemble work (i.e. 7 to maybe 16 piece) and stuck to the very good jazz they were more than capable of playing, I might of liked their music. It would have been good to have had two or more bands in the Players Association mould.

Ha-ha...Quinny, you are one seriously bitter trout. So you don't like the Salsoul Orchestra...is it really necessary to poison their 'best of' with this inappropriate morsel? What about the artists they simply backed (Double Exposure, etc) - you don't like any of them?
Pretty obvious choices for me: 'It's Good For The Soul' (Walter Gibbons Mix...wonderful) 'Salsoul Rainbow', 'Chicago Bustop' (both versions) and 'Take Some Time Out (For Love)'.

The Salsoul Orchestra had some FANASTIC disco songs back in the mid/late 70's. My number one favourite of their's would have to be:

    Salsoul Rainbow 1975

It's a beautiful disco song, I wish there was an extended 12" version.

    Their close runners up are:
    Salsoul Hustle 1975
    Tangerine 1975

    And my other favourites are:
You're Just The Right Size 1975
    Chicago Bus Stop 1975
It's Good For The Soul 1976
    It's A New Day 1977
Getaway 1977 (cover version of EWF)
    Magic Bird Of Fire 1977

I happen to have 3 of their albums:
    Salsoul Orchestra 1975
    Chrismas Jollies 1976
Magic Journey 1977 (unfortunately no album cover with this one)

Didn't that song come out when Sensurround was the big new thing at the theaters (Earthquake)? Foolish me thought the record was going to reproduce the shaking that Sensurround simulated. Those of you that remember Sensurround, didn't you wonder what kind of damage it did to your hearing??! Any worst than loud disco music on a bad sound system? :D

    Well,

just like our friend QUINNY, I'm not a fan of orchestral disco and most of the songs recorded by SALSOUL ORCHESTRA don't move me at all. They're all fantastic musicians, of course. In fact, I prefer to listen MFSB records instead. THE SALSOUL ORCH sounds like a burocratic, mechanical version of MFSB. BTW, I know that the musicians are almost the same on the records of MFSB and SALSOUL ORCH, but these records sound different to my ears. MFSB records has more swing and jazzy tones... Anyway, if I have to pick a track by SALSOUL ORCHESTRA, I'll pick RUNAWAY - this song is great. Other great song by them is TAKE SOME TIME OUT. But their version of GUANTANAMERA is simply awful, you know what I mean?

    Just my opinion, folks.

The track that does it for me is Salsoul Hustle (1975). I love the arrangements and the whole vibe from that record. In fact I like most of the stuff on that LP.

Special mentions for Runaway and Dance A Little Bit Closer.

To those who don't appreciate the Salsoul Orchestra: yes, their swirling orchestral arrangements were a bit twee at times - but then again, that was part of the fun of dancing to the Salsoul Orchestra. I loved it! :D

That's kind of hard to say because I'm such a big fan of their music. Here's a list of the ones that I'm most partial to:

    Salsoul Hustle
    Salsoul Rainbow
    Tangerine
    Standing And Waiting On Love
It Don't Have To Be Funky
    Street Sense
    212 N. 12th
