I loved it Miss Dayna. You really know how to make people feel
comfortable when you are interviewing them, and Patti seems
relaxed and having fun.Great job!
Thom
Yes, very good interview! Few surprises thrown in there for me. Mary Jane Girls! Yep, that was a surprise. Gonna pull out my TGIF soundtrack tonight.
DANCE!!-To the BOOGIE WONDERLAND........
my dearest Dayna,
Thank you, so much! A zillion kisses to you, for letting Our Ms. Brooks know that I'm out there.
Still listening...
Still studying her vocals...
Still a major FAN!
I'm glad to hear Pattie refer-back to Marc Paul Simon, more than once. He was a MAJOR force in Disco music, behind the scenes, for years! And it all ended, just as he was, finally getting his, long overdue, personal props.
And (as I've said in earlier posts) I don't believe in sharing everything I know from artists - especially, stuff about the dark side of the biz - because it's not my place to compromise their ability to get work, by spilling-the-beans of discord... So, it's with a sigh of relief (because Pattie opened the door), that I can say I've never worked with a single Simon Sousan recording artist, who's ever gotten paid! How refreshing to hear an artist be so candid about the good, the bad and the ugly parts of their career.
You bring out the very best in everyone you meet! Congrats on, yet another insightful interview!
And thanks for letting this ga-ga Pattie fan-atic, be a small part of it.MUAH!
P.S. The "quintessential American Disco Record for 1978", Manny Slali & Bob Stone's Remix of "Heartbreak in Disguise", will be featured (with narration of my personal feelings & observations about the track's history) on Episode 3 of SLF's Back To Music, airing Thurs., April 2nd @ 12noon Atlantic / 9am Pacific. On Discoteria, on the live365 Network. With the encore airing Mon., April 6th @ 12noon Atlantic & 9am Pacific.
P.P.S. Please let her know that, just the thought of the legendary Pattie Brooks listening to me pay tribute, over-the-airwaves, has me all goose-bumply!!

Thanks for that great interview, Dayna! It was funny hearing her talk about Bunny Sigler and not finding the sound was right for her. I didn't want to say it before hand, but I wasn't a huge fan of the Party Girl LP. I think it just doesn't work for me, and may Patti explained it correctly that her sound and the Instant Funk sound didn't work too good together.
And I agree 100% that promotion is what makes or breaks a song. There are so many great songs out there, but if a record company doesn't get behind the record, it just dies a quick death. I think they are able to use it as a tax write-off, so either way, they got something out of it, even at the expense of the artist's reputation and career.

"Who's Donald Cleveland"?
Im not so jaded that I dont think that's the coolest thing....ever(~!!!!)
Great Interview. Glad she is in such good spirits. You can usually tell by the general tone when an artist is "down". Very happy to know that Pattie is "Upbeat". She deserves it.
I wish you had been able to mention the Mirage CD re-release to her. I wonder given her opinion about Bunny Sigler and the "Party Girl" album, how does she feel about the "In My World" lp?
Very often artists do NOT know when they have had some licensed product out. Oh well, she will find out.
Click on the below link and you will get to hear mine & Stephen's favorite "Come Fly With Me" and the song that Stephen calls The "quintessential American Disco Record for 1978", Manny Slali & Bob Stone's Remix of "Heartbreak in Disguise".

lol.. Actually Donald we had so much fun with that, not at your expense but It was your quote that gave us the avenue to really get our man talk on~!!Thank u..I'm kind of dizzy at times anyway so I really didn't know what your part in the music business was or is especially in conjunction with Pattie..
..I can't mention everything as I set a limit of 90 minutes.. and we go way over that especially with the inbetween girl "off the record talk"..But you were a hit ,let's put it that way..lol, but I was :icon_lol:at your signature being WDC,.funny.BUT I did relay your message~!!!!
Thank you Dayna,
Again you did a terrific job. Patti is an aquaintance of ours. Really a friend through one of my best friends Hal from American Bandstand. You talk about beautiful, Patti is every bit of what a classy, sophisticated and genuinely down to earth person could be. Her body is " A TEMPLE!
" she radiates beauty!! Both my wife and I had the pleasure of having dinner with her a couple of years ago over at the Geisha House in Hollywood. Let me tell, when she is in the room, she is turning heads. Patti just oozes with star quality! That night I was in Heaven. We love you Patti, all of us Disco Die hards here in Los Angeles love you very much!!!
Disco Lives in L.A!!!
I'd like to add my thanx Dayna for another fab interview. Ms.Brooks seems so nice. She was on UK TV recently on a documentary called 'Queens Of Disco' featuring various people talking about acts such as Donna Summer & Sylvester & I was amazed at how good she looks. Very classy lady!
...ya gotta beat the street......
Superb Dayna, absolutely superb!
I have to confess (shock horror) that apart from the obvious track (A.D) I'm not so familiar with the work of Patti and thus I learned soooo much from this interview. It was also really entertaining, I'm rushing to belatedly catch up on the music. I loved the posting of the track Heartbreak in disguise and can't believe I missed it at the time (although I guess I was in my early teens). It seems there was a blue vinyl UK 12" that I've just noticed on various websites. I will start with that.
Oh yey!:icon_biggrin:

Miss Dayna:
A great, fun filled, joyous interview! Patti Brookes is a gem and I wish she had put out many more albums than she did. Though we all were a part of the Disco scene and lived it, I always, through your interviews learn something more about the Disco Era, the Artists, the overall scene, and myself. Thank you Miss Dayna and I look forward, with childish eager anticipation, to your next interview.

this reminds me of the story of a few guys from my neighborhood (Northern California) who created a record so many years ago that I'd forgotten it (I just remembered it for 2 reasons: 1. When I read the quote here "promotion makes or breaks a song" and 2. This particular song mentioned Michael Jackson. As I recall, when these guys finished the song, they took it to several record companies who told them that the song was no good and refused to release it....so a small, local record company released it instead with absolutely no promotion. You can guess the rest....a big smash. It was "Rumous" by the Timex Social Club. Not only was it a hit, but it lead to the creation of Club Nouveau, who had a number 1 pop smash with their remake of Bill Wither's "Lean on Me". Then Club Noveau lead to the production team of McElroy and Foster, who had smash hits all over the world working with En Vogue and Tony Toni Tone. Tony Toni Tone spawned writer producer Rafael Saadiq who has produced Whitney Houston, Destiny's Child and many others. All of which started with a record no one would promote.
Thanks for that great story! I didn't realize the song made reference to MJ. Was it the line about 'Michael' must be gay otherwise he wouldn't move that way? What about the other names in the song? Tina and Susan, were they celebrities or people the Club new?

I didn't get chance to post at the time the interview with Pattie went up but thought it was a great interview with some great stories in there. I have heard Party Girl and thought it was a good album. I like Got Tu Go Disco but I would agree that it was not a sound that you would relate with Pattie or Casablanca, I would love to know who came up with the idea of putting Pattie and Bunny together. I just can't see how Casablanca would have promoted it as it is so far away from the label's sound (and therefore its connections).
Pattie seemed full of knowledge of both disco and "the biz", her story about Simon Soussan with his strings and breaks (love them all) and that vidoes of American Bandstand are controlled was really interesting.
I must try and find Stephen's broadcast on Heartbreak In Disguise, the 12inch remix is excellent, I got to hear the album version recently and was very disappointed with that version because I was so familiar with the 12inch version. I can confirm that the UK 12inch is blue vinyl. Bob Stone was not a name I was familiar with but I read an interview D C LaRue did with Jussi and he spoke about his amazement on the 12inch mix of Let Them Dance by Bob Stone. Does anyone know any other tracks he remixed? Was he the House Remixer for Casablanca (not that I was aware that they went with that many mixes - shame he wasn't around to do Dim All The Lights instead of the cut up we got!)
