Disco artists no longer with us.

It is usually with great surprise and grief we hear of disco artists that have passed on. Often people into the disco era will ask why some of these legendary artists no longer perform and to their surprise it is not necessarily because disco for them has become a thing of the passed, but the artist has actually passed away, in some cases quite awhile ago. Here are the artists I know of that are no longer with us. Does anyone know of any others?

    Sharon Redd
    Dan Hartman
    Karen Young
    Phyllis Hyman
    Sylvester
    Patrick Cowley
    A member of Chic
    Leatherman from the Village People

Well this is a somehov morbid subject. Still it might help some people stop wondering about why certain artists suddenly disappeared from the face of the earth.

Here's my addition to the list.

    Gwen Guthrie
    Curtis Hairston
    Jermaine Stewart
    Jaques Fred Petrus
    Sherrick
Shirley Jones of the Jones Girls (or so I've heard...can anyone confirm this)
    Richard "Dimples" Fields
    Serge Ponsar

Was the case of Madleen Kane discussed here at one point? I'm under the impression I read somewhere that she od'd on heroin. If true, too sad.
Ethel Merman on the other hand simply MUST be six feet under.

The Madleen Kane issue was discussed in a previous post. Apparently, thankfully..it was a rumour? I think Madleen is from your part of the world Jussik, a typical tall, beautiful blonde Swedish girl.

Guys, several months ago there was a long thread about this issue. It was called "Who's dead" and recollected data and memories of this forum's posters. I reccomend it to you, even as I think nobody mentioned Madleen Kane... nor Vicki Sue Robinson, who I myself discovered only some weeks ago had died. But there's tons of info about the others.

I just found out last night that Melanie Thorton, the lead singer of La Bouche died in a plane crash en route to Zurich late November 2001. She was considered a house/post-disco performer with a huge worldwide career ahead of her. La Bouche was one of the BEST groups to come from the 90's thanks to Melanie's rich and powerful voice.

We have two add three talented musicians/songwriters/producers who may not be very well known but really created some good music nevertheless.

Garry Glenn...worked with EWF, Phylis Hyman, The Gap Band and others. Made a solo album in 1987.

Wayne Brathwaite....worked with Evelyn King, Melba Moore, Jonathan Butler, Stephanie Mills and a whole lot more. He co-wrote "When The Going Gets Tough..." for Billy Ocean.
    He died in 1991.

Zachery Breux...talented bass player. He was in Roy Ayers' band. Died in 1997

Really it is very interesting matter to discus about all the artist that we've loved , is there is any web site include all the artist that passed away specially from disco era, if anybody know please tell us , and I think that if there isn't a web site now for that matted it's a good idea for music lover to start creating a web site showing this even a page for every artist will help, I think it can be great site and will give all the music lovers what they need an searching for instead of being surprised when the knew about one of the artist that he passed away from 2 years as some time happened to me.
It can be alson a section of this web site the discomusic.com they got most of the data what do you think?
You forget mention FALCO he also give us a good songs

    MAN,

There will soon be a dedicated section here at DiscoMusic.com called "In Memory Of..." Right now there are several threads on this very forum with many names so go back and read up on them.

Kind of depressing when you realize so many talented people have passed on. This was one of the reasons I wasn't too keen on doing such a list. Since many inquire about it, then I'll add it.

Falco was actually one of my faveorite artists in the 80s while growing up and I own all of his LPs (with the acception of the ones not released in the USA which is from 1990 - 99 but on my to get lists for CD's). But I didnt even think to mention him because he wasnt disco music unless you wanna count his 2 tracks from the first LP that got disco play in late 81/82 which were "Der Kommmissar" and "Einzelhalft" (which is an odd rare electronic disco track thats great by the way). But indeed Falco was a great rock/pop artist and was a great loss.

    Edwin Starr

Incidentally, Edwin Starr passed away yesterday at age 61. (1/21/42-4/2/03). He wrote the song "War". He also had the song "Contact" which had beautiful accoustics in the discos way back when.

Jimmy, I wonder if you remember another track from Falco's first album, it was called "Maschine Brennt" or something similar, it was a great dance song. Very powerful. But I doubt it was a hit...

actually 2 members of Chic have passed away, Bernard Edwards and dynamite drummer Tony Thompson. Thompson was so respected among musicians there was talk of him joining Led Zeppelin at one point. Listen to his drumming on the Power Station's "Some Like it Hot", sounds like gun fire....

Another to add to the list... Robbie Rae of The Raes (A Little Lovin, Don't Turn Around, Que Sera Sera).

    From the Canadian Pop Encyclopedia:
In October 1999, Rae moved to Thailand (Kamala Beach - Phuket) where he invested in his own outdoor bar as well as singing in Patong with a new band. On December 26, 2004 Rae went missing as one of many victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster when Phuket was devestated by flooding. He was located a short time later safe and sound and resumed work at the Tai Pan Club. However, on February 9, 2006 Rae succumbed to liver and kidney failure in Phuket Hospital. He was 52 years old.
